I’ve always wanted one of these for surf fishing but you rarely see these reels for sale. Also, it is amazing how similar this BG-90 is to a Daiwa GS-90. The only difference appears to be only cosmetics such as the handle and the paint color. Other than that they are the same. I’ve had to free an axle shaft just like this once. The grease had turned into hardened glue and was incredibly stubborn. This reel should not have metal washers that can corrode like this. My GS-90 certainly did not have this! I usually grease the pinion shaft before I put a bearing on it. I have unfrozen an AR shaft like that in a Ryobi Powerful No. 4 reel. It took a lot of time and penetrating oils to get it loose. I could not accept a reel without an AR override. This was a beautiful restoration Dennis. It will make a great surf reel. I hope you’ll fully restore the reel one day. - Chris
You can use braid on it, but like most older reels, it will need to be backed by mono and you will need to watch incase the braid starts wearing the line guide - Dennis
Great work Dennis. I would definitely fish that reel.
I am taking it out as soon as I replace the bearings, which came in this week.
Good trick with the using of the pinion gear slide method to see if shaft is bent. I'll have to remember that trick. Thanks
Glad to pass it on!
Nice job Dennis. That generation BG are the lifetime BG’s. Its a keeper, don’t let that one go. 👍🏻👍🏻
THe only place this will go is fishing!
Nice Job Dennis .👍 It Was A Enjoyable Video . That's A Great Reel. Nothing Like A Parts Reel. 😊
I just got the replacement bearings and I am ready to complete the restoration and take it fishing. Thanks

Great reel for The Outer Banks of NC!
Yes it is
big, old, and grungy, my favorite kind of reel, most of my reels are work horses, not shelf dweller's
Mine to not collectable, but the fish fear them!
Very good 👍🏼 I have one like it
Nice big reel. Should handle large stripped bass, no problem.
It can handle the Stripers easily! Nice reel
You lost me somewhere around Albuquerque on this one . Tuff Reel to service.
:)
is the turtle wax chrome cleaner different then the chrome polish and rust remover you are using here?
Same product. It is getting harder to find. I think it may have been discontinued. After all - What cars have chrome on them these days?
Nice tough reel, but its just dont hold braided only mono line

You fixed one for yourself that is great.
Every now and then! I just got the replacement bearings so that will complete the project
it must have some gear ratio with that large gear
Yes - I think it is 5:1
