That’s insane that kind of diversity and in such high numbers, when the landscape looks so baron! Always been a reef tank guy so had no idea a fresh water environment would be so amazing.
Malawi is also known as the freshwater reefs. as there are stone reefs and the fish are so colorful :) but there are most color on the Mbuna group. Mbuna is malawi for stone grazers, and called that as they live by the stone reefs eating of the algae on the stones. :) if you want to try and keep malawi get 1 of the 4 groups the cichlids are divided into, and the Mbuna group is the one who need the least space, but can be the most aggressive.
HAHAHA! such a funny comment. Worldsmostattractiveman! this is a "mouthbrooder" which means that she is protecting her young by placing them in her mouth. She doesn't swallow them. She signals to her babies which swim to her mouth, then swims away to release them in a safer location.
Geoff...the "Aufwuchs" or Periphyton is a complex mixture of algae, cyanobacteria, heterotrophic microbes, and detritus that is attached to submerged surfaces in most aquatic ecosystems (spe the mbuna specifically have adapted well at grazing on this layer. Check out this great article regarding it... www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/aufwuchs.php
Im also taking notes of the background. Just recently set up a 100 gallon aquarium....got the sand. Now i just need rocks to make it look like their motherland haha
Outstanding video...thank you for bringing these beautiful fish from the wild into our living rooms. I also like that you put up the scientific names for each species!!
That's a lot of fish living off just algae scrapped off rocks. It's not even green algae,no,never see that, but some kind of reddish brown algae. Must be nutritious, have lots of carotene to give color to the fish. You watch this and half expect to see a Giant Clam, maybe a few feather corals going back and forth in the waves.
me encanta, sueño todos los dias con los mbunas. tengo un acuario de 550 litros lleno de ellos, pero la libertad de verles en su habitat me impresiona.
Fantastic vlog well documented and informative regarding the many types of fish one thing you will not find is any plants 🌱 just algae as this is what they feed on😀👍
Got a question this fish keeping business in African isn't black owned so you got the black's going out getting your fish 🐠🐟 while you get fat and sassy I feel you, They need an independent black company
@@hagebycikliden569 I see such black fish often. but, I have never seen such black fish in aquariums. what could it be? very interesting color for cichlids. sorry if i spelled wrong (my english is very bad)
@@twasbrillig33 Not yet! My current juvies are all spoken for, but I do have about 15 fry from the most recent mating The males are not nearly as stunning as that F1, and I haven't been able source a healthy replacement locally. Every fish store that stocks them has serious sunken belly going on. I'll have to post a video of my tanks at some point, got Venustus and OB Peacocks breeding too, as well as some 333s we're growing

If I could, I would give 10 like at least. Great Job. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Truly, Malawi cichlids are the fishes of heaven.
I was thinking exactly that while watching this!
Very beautyfull
Kept Africa in cichlids back in the 70's when they were hard to get. Great fish.
Cichlids are just as beautiful as any seawater tropical fish. You picked the perfect track for the video as well. Cheers!
This is the best video of Lake Malawi species on youtube, hands down. Congratulations on your work!
totally agreed
0:41 are we all gonna just pretend this didnt happen?
worldsmostattractiveman RIGHT?! I came to the comments to see if anyone mentioned that

duh.
Every single of them has its attractiveness. So Impressive!!!
Thank you Pandora, there more videos on the chanel.
No hay un solo documental - vídeo en el que se fije atención en el bentos. También es vida, no sólo peces, ¡ Que también)...😊
Normally full coulered males are shy for divers. And not easy to make photos and videos 🇲🇼
wow 0:40 never seen juvenile fish can hide or do "nap time" inside the bigger fish mouth,
"Your tank is too small" said nobody
How cool. To dive with the fish most of us only see at the aquarium or pet store.
So is the food chain based around algal growth on rocks? There seems no aquatic vegetation.
Geoff Breen yes it is:)
@@Axel-ss5wd Amazing. Helps explain the big rubbery lips on so many fish.

Echo en falta atención en el bentos ( algas, briozoos, esponjas, moluscos, crustáceos, etc...)
You mean bentochromis Tanganyika?

nothing more beautiful than watching the fish in their natural environment
Beautiful! Amazing to see these familiar fish in their natural environment. Thank you!
Unfortunately I can’t put 100k thumbs up. Incredible good job guy!
Are used to have cichlids and I enjoyed watching them breed! Busch gardens in Florida has a huge Cichlid tank and this video reminded me of that.

Some species of cichlids females are one of the greatest mothers in nature. The word nurturing is accurate when you describe them.
very beautiful! I like malawian cichlids.
What's the tank size.
1800 liter

I've had many of these in a chiclid tank I had years ago! Very kul!
