A subscriber of mine, Big Scott, moved to Thailand almost 2 years ago. He sold everything in the US and made this huge move. We did an interview and soon became friends. It cost him a fortune. for an abundance of reasons which he will explain he is moving back to the US. Moving around the world is not for everyone. Scott's cautionary tale will be good info for someone who is on the fence and is only hearing positive aspects about Thailand and moving abroad in general. No where is perfect.

@robertgrays8790 - the Thai girlfriend won't last in Texas! The cultural differences and loneliness, especially homesickness will have her right back in Thailand. Scott is a pilot so he will be away from his girlfriends for days at a time. The absence can drive an American girl crazy, let alone a Thai girlfriend.

Come back to the states, and after 3 months complain about the price of things in America, the traffic there, and general cost of living. And then start planning his flight back to Thailand. As for the heat and humidity, Darwin is in the tropics of Australia so the weather is about the same. But it grinds away at you. I'm retiring in a couple of years and moving to Perth. Great place, pretty much my second home already. Its descibed as having a Mediterranean climate, hot summers, mild, wet winters, but low humidity. And that's the killer in the tropics. The DTA (double taxation agreements between countries) agreements he's referring to will make your eyes watery if you are it paying attention to your incoming finance stream to a country which implements this. I cancelled my Colombian visa for this very reason). Many people blow it off and if and when the country’s tax authorities find out you will be hit with a huge fine as well as having to repay the tax you owe. Be warned! Be advised, if a country in which you have a residency visa does not have a favorable DTA agreement in place you may be subject to taxes on your overseas income. And just pulling a few bucks out of your atm doesn’t work when you’ve committed to house payments etc.

Took a few language classes. Would stay a month or two then leave for a few months. In and out keeps your sanity. Bringing a dog, buying a new vehicle, renting a big house amateur moves. Stay light, always be prepared to move on in a place like Thailand. Bringing a Thai girl back to the US super amateur move, know the game. The tax discussion is a non issue for US residents. I think he hasn't given it nearly long enough. I have been in thailand 11 years and didn't really know the country that well except the odd visit to see my wife's family. Met my thai wife in the UK. Never been to pattaya and the first year was great. Viewed things through tourist goggles and the next two years was more frustrated as you get to see some of the faults of the country. Then I realized letting go of your own culture and embrace the new was a big turning point for me. I went back to the UK two years ago and then I knew there is no way I could adjust living their again. It was like a police state. Here in thailand your much more free. Don't miss speaking English and like this guy I don't eat thai food except pad thai. Lost 20 kg never felt healthier. Its about letting go of your own culture and embrace the new. I really think he needs to think differently rather believe moving back to where he was unhappy in the first place.

    2) Crazy drivers - live in area where everything you need is walking distance 80% of the time. That way, you drive 1x in 2 weeks for the 20%. That mitigate crossing roads with the crazies.

Things worked out well for me. I carefully planned my retirement. I came over in 1991 for a job in a joint venture factory. I was concerned regarding my retirement. There is no Social Security here. I was saving quite a bit of money working here because the company furnished a vehicle and housing including utitities. The Thai economy crashed around 1997 so that turned out to be the kick I needed to go back to the US for a good paying job. I worked and lived frugally in Southern California for five long miserable years. During that five years I was able to top up my social security account and build another pension. When I was financially able to retire at age 59, I cashed out the factory pension and at age 60 I started receiving a private small pension. I bought a decent condo for cash and at that time still got 51 baht for a dollar. My financial situation allowed me to wait for Social Security until I would receive the ful benefit. Now with Social Security and the small private pension I have a healthy surplus every month. I'm not wealthy by any means but I am able to live exactly as I want and don't need to live on a budget.

Im Asian Am from the PI. came to the US 45 years ago to work marry and raise two grown boys. We visit the home country occasionally because of my parents properties and to enjoy the tropical weather and culture. The reasons you stated for leaving are reasonable and understandable. Foreigners going the the PI probably have the same sort of challenges except for the language issue since English is a second language in my birth country. Maybe you can make Thailand a frequent place for vacation between your work schedules this time around but not a permanent address.
I can relate to the extreme heat as well having not lived in Asia for a long time. But to me the most salient reason for me to stay in the US as a senior citizen is that as one gets older one should expect the possibility of health issues that will start to happen and Medicare will not cover except fpr emergencies. That means that once a year you must still come back here for physical check ups as well as stay if your health issues need monitoring. In my country every health care expense is paid in cash and sometimes before a doctor or hospital can treat you. thats a deal breaker to me. All it takes is one serious illness and your cash is completely wiped out.
All in all this video is a great information hub for others who are planning to go to anywhere in the developing countries in Asia. Its always pragmatic to do your homework first, and be honest in knowing and accepting the good the bad and the ugly about the place you want to set up your next address. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, as the saying goes.

Here's my take on moving to another country ( speaking from experience). Point number one,you get nowhere in the first years. You miss your newspaper, or favourite sausages, it's too hot or too cold or something else. You begin to replace the reasons why you left the crappy place with how much you loved it. Believe me it's all an emotional illusion.
Point two. Decide if you've retired in Thailand or if you've started your own business in the US before you sell up and go ( to paradise).Three. The main problem is that when you get there 90% of things are the same as back where you were. YOU.
Edit: Did this unfortunate gentleman think about leaving the junk and shipping his amazing, brand new pickup , thus saving himself the 50% he so sorely talked about? And possibly the 30 % he would immediately loose by driving the next new vehicle off the lot back home in Texas. That may add up to a cool $ 60.000 in savings.

    • @MarekzAnglii
      @MarekzAnglii 7 місяців тому +1

Not only that. If he shipped his new pickup to the U.S., he'd save on the Thai depreciation AND he could secure at least one, and maybe even both pallets in the back of the pickup, so the actual pallets wouldn't cost anything to ship!

The problem with shipping a vehicle to Thailand is the import tax. If a vehicle is worth $10k, they tax you 25k on it before they allow you to bring into country. I bought a new ford ranger pickup here with everything on it for 26k American, but that was 8 years ago. Don't drive too much so only has 41k on it now and still running great. Only have replaced brakes and tires until two months ago the A/C went out and had to replace whole system. The dealer only charged me $600 American for that repair so was very happy.

All the great places this guy has been, and moved on from? I think I know what his deal is, and I am not criticizing him at all, this is just what I suspect, and I have seen it before. What this guy is searching for, it can never be found in a place, or in material posessions, or career successes, or food or substances or sexual relations. Actually I think he is not searching at all, he is running from, he is running from himself, from the lack of happiness and contentment that he carries within him. A person like that, and again I am NOT criticizing the guy, they will always find reasons to move on to the 'next place'. The reasons he gave, the heat, the traffic, the communication challenges, anybody going from a western anglican culture to an eastern oriental one, they have to know those things are going to be challenges for them. Take my word for it, he is not leaving for those reasons, he is leaving because yet another place did not bring the happiness and contentment he seeks. Happiness comes from within, by knowing what you are (and are not) and accepting yourself for what you are. Best of luck to the guy, and I sincerely hope he finds what he is searching for.............

Interesting reasons. None of them have been a deal-killer for me but others feel differently. My deal-killing problem is the absolute UNaffordability of health insurance here. I am 73 years old with quite a few preexisting conditions that make affordable health insurance impossible. The ever-changing visa situation is another minus for Thailand. Health insurance can start to become expensive after 65. It really depends on your financial situation. I pay most of the medical bills out of pocket because they are usually, but not always, 1/5 to 1/10 the cost in the states. If you have some money then you may look for a high deductible policy that kicks in for a very serious medical emergency. That should bring the cost down, but pre-existing conditions are usually excluded. Right now medicare part b costs around 2k per year if you sign up at 65 and it pays 80 percent of allowed costs after the deductible. The copay cost in many cases is higher than the cost for treatment in se asia. It is 10 percent more each year you delay signing up for part b. Part A pays allowed hospital costs for 60 days after the deductible. Nothing is perfect and no best answer. if you have very bad health then look first a place that has good medical care at a low price. I doubt America will give you the best deal. Most se asian policies exclude the usa for a reason.

Nothing went wrong as such. I don't have a problem with Thai driving, it is what it is. I love the heat. Language barrier, sorry to say, that's his problem. Learn Thai, it's not that hard! Thai women love to "take care" or everything, it's their way of showing love. I just let my Thai missus get on with it now, even though it takes 20 minutes to make a simple purchase that we would make in about 10 seconds lol, and just pretend that I have no idea how to buy, say, a hose clip pipe for a certain diameter hose, and just let the Thai spend 20 minutes trying to figure it out. Thai food, well, I eat clean food anyway so not a problem for me. I would advise people to "stay" here long term rather than just sell up and move over. Big difference between holidays and living here, and to try and get out of the holiday mode and do normal things in Thailand, like golf, badminton, bowling, cinema, walking, gym etc. Also, "stay" in different places for a month or so to get the feel for what suits you.

I only left Thailand because my partner passed away ( road accident ) " upto life ". .. if not for this I would definitely live in Thailand, but I would never sell my assets off back home.

His savings funds are monies that have already been taxed so it's not subject to double taxation by the Thai government. In order to be taxed on earned income overseas, you must have lived in Thailand for a number of consecutive months in Thailand per year. This proposed tax law was created to tax Thai nationals who are keeping earned funds in off-shore accounts and transferring them directly into their Thai bank accounts without paying any taxes.

If married < 2 years a CR-1 (conditional resident) or IR-1 (Immediate relative) will take almost 2 years. A K-1 (fiancé) is about 12-18 months. Tourist visa for a single Thai girl with an American boyfriend? Hahahahahahahahaha. Almost impossible. Back to the subject at hand, he simply failed to gauge the impact of the change of culture and environment of living in Thailand and his capacity to adapt to it. I've been all over Asia for the last 11 years and the ones that don't last typically are the ones that bag it all up and move with no real plan or ideas.
Moving abroad to "Retire" were you are giving up all your social safety nets is always a huge risk and not having some type of income that can cover at least 3x your basic monthly needs and refusing to work is just a means for short term
Ahh and the K-1 depends on this guy's interview and personal things for say, i used to work at the US Embassy in Saigon 2016 as a TAD position and i dealt a LOT with Vietnamese doing tourist visas and westerns trying to bring their "Wives" i say that loosly to America on a K-1
Majority of the people we rejected were due to the Western (American/Aussie) failing the interview to the point we rarely got to the future wife
We typically need to make sure the guy has a basis back home, isn't already married, has steady income to hold a family, and is not a back packer that found a young girl he trying to snag back home and lock down.
The k-1 we issued though was 90 days, with 1 extention allowed that they did in America not in Vietnam as they are already in America by then.
Ahh yeah back on subject, i agree with you i find he just is cutting his loses, i dont know the guy he seems like a cool guy to chill with but he def. didn't have a long term plan or any fall back while being abroad.
