- In this short video, I will be answering some of your question on this IKEA MALM desk. As well as explaining to you guys how I mount monitor arm onto this desk.
Dual monitor arm: amzn.to/3uOg8uj
I noticed you use DT 770 pro headphones they are great (an industry standard). Your video is so helpful thank you for this. Space is a premium!
Thanks! When you say it has a frame, do you mean that there is a square section of sold wood at the back of the desk surface where the monitor arm is clamped on your MALM? Yours looks like the rear 5cm depth is different to the rest. On my (older, no cable tray) MALM, the entire desk surface is just veneered cardboard honeycomb.
@Will Stephenson I believe the top structure is like grid. Outer frame(maybe about 3cm) is solid, there is also solid frame inside to accommodate chest-drawer.
Just got myself a monitor arm and I encountered this exact scenario. Still am trying to tighten the clamp as the knob is too big within the cable management tray, but I'll figure out something soon.
You know, I encountered the same problem, but when I tried to spin the knob inside the cable management tray, it was too big to tighten. Instead, I grabbed a knife and a hammer and chiseled the plastic knob into a circular shape so that I could turn it inside the cable management tray.
were you able to figure it out? I have the same problem and the plastic knob thing is really stuck on to the screw.
@@akhilkarve6149 nah I returned it and got a new desk lol
@@gradientblob1014was it still easy to tighten with the circular shape? I have the same issue and I was thinking of doing a similar thing, or cutting a small rectangle into the area of the cable tray that the clamp was hitting into
@@shroomjak200 It was more difficult to turn than usual, but It still tightened very well. It holds up my 18 pound monitor perfectly. I also decided on cutting some sort of hole to all the screw to tighten, but I didn't really want to ruin or permanently damage the look of my own desk.
Got a question, how'd you tighten the knob without blockage from the cable tray board? Mine is doing that right now, I can turn it for a bit before it gets blocked by the back board of the cable tray
This just saved my life (and my desk, other solution would have involved a drill and a hole in my desk )
What I was looking for thank you
OH MY GOD THANK YOU
Would a 28” monitor look too big for this desk? 😭 ! Was looking to get this desk then mount my monitor with an arm thingy. Nvm! I got my question answered !
Do you know which monitor stand ur using?
Hi, I’m looking for a dual monitor mount but I’ve heard it breaks IKEA malm desk as they’re thin/soft. Any help?
@frullfog
I never had any issues as you can see from the video.
@@TaoMStudio How long have you had that Malm? Looks like they've updated the design since I bought mine because it doesn't have that framing. Maybe IKEA listened to criticism and added some reinforcement to fix the cracking problem.
Others have used something like a thin metal plate under where the arm grips the desk. This, as far as I understand, distributes the pressure more evenly and prevents the cracking that previous Malms have experienced.
Thanks for a good video!!
Very nice
What's the best way to remove the cable tray? Is it possible to do without removing the drawer?
Hit it with a hammer
I need that answer too
Did you get it off?
@@ranenoldi7129 No, I gave up.
did you change the tightener on the clamp? As that is easier to clamp on MALM desks
@TaoMStudio What make/model is the chair that you are using?
Tao please help me how do i remove the cable management runway
thanks !
I've been trying this for three hours and no luck 😢
How you've been use that ikea malm?
After a year how is the desk holding up, any damage? I’m thinking of mounting dual 27 inch monitors but im also using a steel reinforcement plate do you think that’ll do?
Yes
should i stress about doing this process
Do you think this setup is good for a Razer Hunstman Mini, Samsung 27 Inch Monitor without it floating, and a Razer Basilisk mouse and room for studying. I want to study and game
Can’t see why not.
What is the size of your table?
@Joseph de Sales 140cm x 65cm
how small is the gap at the back of the table? from the table top to the cable tray.
@prolahsey
4.5cm
Hey tao how is that table mount holding up?
perfectly!
Hi what monitor stand I’d this
@LouisThomson
I don't think they have the same one anymore, but here is the detail: amzn.to/2q1ufHM
without using a monitor stand would it fit a pc and two 28” monitors on it?
@rhyz
Possible, but it will be tight fit.
@@TaoMStudio okay thank you
Currently, there are 2 monitors mounted: 27" and 24".
