Out Run was one of Sega's best known racing games released to arcades in 1986. Using Sega's new 'Super Scaler' technology and two advanced co-processors, the specially developed Out Run board was able to draw both dozens of large, colorful sprites to the screen at varying sizes and scales as well as a multi-lane roadway simultaneously which was mind-blowing for its time. The Super Scaler technology was also used in other Sega arcade titles of the time including Space Harrier and Hang-On and later Afterburner and Power Drift. This would be one of the last 2d racing games Sega would release before the introduction of the 3d polygonal rendering technology seen in Virtua Racing.
Out Run also introduced an idea of choice not seen often before: Out Run let you not only choose which path to take at the forks in the road at the end of each stage, but also pick which of three excellent music choices you would like to listen to during your game. To create the winding roadway with its unique forks, the twin co-processors worked to draw one side of the road each while the Super Scaler hardware added in the background and sprites.
Cannonball is an excellent port of the original Out Run code to modern computers that also adds bug fixes and new features on top of an arcade-perfect experience. Some features you can see and hear in the video include true 60 fps gameplay, a widescreen mode, a preview of the selected music track on the radio tuner menu, a fix for bugged audio samples present even in official soundtracks, and support for gamepads, wheels, and joysticks. Out Run is described as being a driving game rather than a racing game as the only opponents are the the timer, the road, and your skill. The car only has two gears, so shift up around 150 kmh. For standing starts such as at the start line and any restarts after you crash, try to keep the tachometer in the green zone until the car is released. If the car starts moving while the tachometer is in the green, you will get a much faster start. When you do get the faster start, shift up earlier than normal to avoid slowing down by getting close to the top of the low gear.
When you reach the forks in the road, pay attention to your timer on the top of the screen. If you have made it to the end of a stage but have not driven through the fork yet, you are not in the clear yet. The time extension is only granted when you pass through the checkpoint after the fork, so if you reach a fork with fewer than 10 seconds left you will time out. When deciding which way to go at the fork, the left paths generally have easier stages to drive than the right paths. To complete Out Run, you must work to memorize the layout and order of turns in each stage since the signs and corners will play tricks on you. The S-turn signs in the first stage claim many beginners on their first time through because they expect the corners that follow to be much longer and sharper; do not steer aggressively through this short chicane and you should be able to make it through without problems.
After passing through the first fork, beware blind and sharp corners on both the left and right second stages! If you go take the left fork towards Gateway, watch for the turn signs because two sets of signs have sneaky corners after them that have decreasing radii that you must slow down for. If you do not slow down, you'll end up crashing into the rocks on the outside shoulder of these turns! The same goes for the course on the right side of the fork, Devil's Canyon. After a gentle right turn, you will come over a hill to a surprise hard left turn. The hill makes it impossible to see the turn coming, and if you do not slow down in time you'll end up crashing into the canyon wall before you can react. Keep your wits about you as these tricks continue well into later stages.
The commuters you see on the road are refreshingly nice obstacles to deal with. If you do make contact with them, you will lose some speed and be shot off to one side. Countersteer hard and fast to try and avoid going off the road. However, if you are patient and pull up slowly behind them, they will actually change lane to get out of your way! You can see this happen as I travel through Gateway. When you encounter a clump of traffic, slow down and avoid trying to make passes in corners, then drive down the lane lines to coax the cars to change lanes out of your way. Remember that contact with any solid piece of scenery at any speed will cause you to crash and stop for several seconds, so do not risk getting shot off the road and into a piece of scenery by bumping into another driver.

Didn't know about that Cannonball enhanced port for the pc. Thanks!
BTW what do you think of Outrun 2006: Coast 2 coast? It's my favourite, even though Scud Race and Daytona 2 tracks are missing, unlike Outrun 2.
