I lived in Md at the time I visited Sacramento a few years ago...I pulled over to take a pic of the sign, and a CHP pulled behind me and yelled out, “Let me guess, you are from Md??” Pretty cool...
I have vacationed in Ocean City, MD since I was a child!! I love seeing that sign when leave traveling over the Rt.50 bridge!! I hope to make it to Sacramento some day to see the Ocean City, MD sign. No one should mess with the signs, there nostalgic!
Hello Scott, I grew up in Davis, Ca. I loved seeing the West Sacramento sign for Ocean City MD, every time we would travel across the causeway into Sacramento; which would later become known as West Sacramento. During the month of September 2020, we will be taking a trip from CO to Niagara Falls to Vermont and ending at Ocean City MD and then I will check this item off from my "must do" list. Just one of the little wonders of the world to see.... right :)... life is good and I agree with you "No one should mess with the signs, there nostalgic!"
Ha! It's always fun for us here on the East Coast to see the "Sacramento CA 3073" sign as we leave Ocean City, MD. Beach Fun! Perhaps someday I'll get to visit Sacramento and see the Ocean City Sign. ;D Happy Trails!

I grew up seeing that Sacramento Sign in OCMD. One of these days when I'm out in Sactown I'm gonna rent a car and go see the other sign.

On I 40 in Barstow Ca there’s a sigh for Wilmington North Carolina 2554 miles. That’s where the 40 ends
Likewise Wilmington, NC also has a sign along the I-40 going westbound stating Barstow, CA as being 2554 miles away!
Yea 40 is an old road like 50 they are straight shots. 301 is like that goes from Maine to Florida. Those were the roads before interstates were put in. USA has only had interstates since like the late 50s. Before then it was dirt roads that turned into paved roads
Seen a sign west of Orange, Texas on I-10 west stating El Paso 857 miles and likewise a sign south of Anthony, TX right outside El Paso along I-10 eastbound stating Beaumont as being 852 miles! I know both cities are in Texas, but the mileages on the signs are still quite monumentally huge!
There’s also an Exit 880 near the Sabine River in Eastern Texas
There is a sign in Ocean City MD too that says California, 3000 miles

I did that route on my motorcycle in 2007. It took me 7 days and my mileage was closer to 3300 miles because I missed a couple of turns and had to backtrack to US 50. I had quite the feeling of accomplishment when I arrived in Ocean City. Then I remembered that I had to ride back.
I am born and live in Maryland. When I went to Ocean City, Maryland I saw the road sign many times. It is so odd that California and Maryland have a thing in common.
Yeah, I grew up in Maryland and the Sacramento sign when leaving OC always made us laugh. I think it was just a novel way to make people aware that they could stay on Route 50 and drive across the entire country.
Me and my family go to ocean city every year but this year we went to Myrtle Beach South Carolina and I loved it

No. If you stay on the road it will take you straight to it. There are not many roads that go across the us as the same road

If you want another similar story, check out the first mile of I-70 in Baltimore. There is a sign that gives the distance to Columbus, St Louis, Denver, and Cove Fort (the western terminus of I-70).

The first year Ocean City, Maryland put theirs up. I loved it.
It is meant to match the signage at the OTHER end of US 50 - in Ocean City MD. The ends of US 40 have similar signage at their the same is likely true of US 1. (Is the same true of US 2?)

Highway 50 used to go further and ended at the Oakland Bay Bridge. Perhaps 3073 miles would have been correct based on this more western end.

I knew a lawman who is now also a head honcho of a certain county. When I was a teen, I stumbled into his backyard and leaning against the back of his house, had a bunch of road signs. They were HUGE. Anyways, he stole them. I ask why and he just said because he felt like it at the time.

While not a mileage sign I seen a sign going south on I-95 south of Richmond, VA near the I-85 interchange giving Atlanta and Miami as control cities! Any input as to why such far away places on a sign when Fayetteville, NC and Raleigh, NC are both alot closer? And don't get me in on why New York City is always the control city on I-95 north signs in Baltimore when it should be Philadelphia instead!!!
I’m assuming those cities are larger metro areas. I’ve driven through that interchange before. I’m surprised they didn’t put Charlotte along with Atlanta.
The Eastern end in Ocean City Maryland has 3073 Sacramento California. NJDOT should do the same 3073 Astoria, OR on US-30 from Atlantic City and 2968 San Francisco on I-80

Two things for sure is that Highway 50 is still shorter than I-90 and is still longer than the diameter of the Moon.

I wish highway 50 would run in Los Angeles in Southern California and for us to have that Ocean City Maryland sign since LA is a larger more famous city than Sacramento
But we are the capital. So suck it socal. Even the governor wants to stay here.
@@slavikk6712 the state capital of Sacramento is not as important as the largest city is in the state of California so NorCal sucks and SoCal is better at everything!!
But I do have to admit that NorCal has a lot of open nature and wineries than we do in SoCal
