So Much Whisky! The Whisky I Bought In Scotland
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лип 2023
- In this video I unpack from my trip and unbox the whisky bottles I bought and brought back with me from my trip to Scotland, most notably to Islay and Campbeltown. I was only allowed to bring back 1.14 liters of Scotch back to Canada, but perhaps pushed the envelope a bit. Glad I was able to bring home these bottles and souvenirs. Hoping to get back to our normally scheduled Single Malt Scotch Whisky reviews soon. Looking forward to chatting about these bottles. Thanks as always for watching. Cheers.

Incredible haul. Nice to see customs let the over the limit slide.
Thanks Peter! I was sweating bullets when I said how much I was over. Very thankful for the grace. Cheers🥃
So glad to see you had the same experience with customs that I had coming home to the U.S. What a great trip, so happy you had so many wonderful distillery visits. Hopefully see you soon, looking forward to the video!
Glad that luck at the border has been on our side so far Jerry. Hope to cross paths someday soon. Cheers 🥃
Wow! That’s a great way to keep the experience going at home. A little envious of your bar.
Keeping the experience going was definitely the plan. If I ever long to be back at Springbank or elsewhere I'll just pour a glass. Hope your own collection also continues to grow. Cheers 🥃
That alcohol import limit is stupid, especially at 1.14 L. I just found a dusty Bruichladdich Rocks bottle myself, should be a solid pour. Nice haul! And I’m sure a fantastic trip
Thanks! I agree that the limit needs to be eased as it is, all but 1 province is near impossible to import alcohol into. At least let us bring things home, right? I'm sure you'll enjoy that dusty Bruichladdich rocks. I enjoyed mine while packing. Cheers🥃
Bottling my own Scotch were highlights on my trips to the Whisky Trail from Aberlour, Balvenie, Benromach, Bruichladdich, Isle of Arran and Old Pulteney. Sláinte!
What a phenomenal experience! Sounds like you saw a bit of everything! Benromach sounds like a pretty unique place to visit! Glad you got to visit so many distilleries during your trip. Happy New Year! Cheers 🥃
1st time viewer -- awesome selection and fun to learn about the individual tours.
Welcome here! Glad you enjoyed the video. Should be plenty more in the future. Cheers🥃
Great haul, buddy. They just kept coming! Enjoy! 🥃
Thanks man, I'll be cracking them soon. Cheers 🥃
Excellent bottles! Looking forward to seeing your reviews of these gems. Thanks 🙏 well done 👍 ciao S.
Thanks Sandro! I'm looking forward to cracking into these. Cheers🥃
Interesting to see your haul, some great choices! Haste ye back
Thanks Sandy, I'll be back as soon as I can! Cheers🥃
Nice haul!!! Gotta love Campbeltown and Islay! Can’t wait for my next Campbeltown trip!
Thanks Daniel! Sounds like you'll be bringing back your own great haul next time you visit too! Cheers 🥃
Wow, what a selection! That's gonna be many months of fun to sample through...
Got lucky with the customs....Slightly off topic, but I got harrassed recently bringing in cigars (well under the duty free allowance) because the officer essentially didn't believe that my wife smokes them as well, so they implied that they were all mine and therefore over the limit.
Got sent to secondary inspection and the (female) officer there was able to wrap her head around the concept that even women can enjoy the occasional cigar....
This haul should keep me busy for quite some time :) Heaven forebid, a woman smoke! The audacity! The nerve! haha, that's a ridiculous one. Just apply the portion equally per person. That's a silly one to send you to secondary for. Glad reason won out in the end. Cheers 🥃
Some seriously interesting pick ups there! Great watch
Thanks Phil, I really appreciate the feedback. You'll have to make tracks and return to Islay yourself, I'm sure you'd head home with an equally epic haul. Cheers man 🥃
@@whiskyonthewestcoast I'd love to go back! Pleasure. Enjoying your channel. Great to see it growing.
nice catch...esp the bruichladdich and lagavulin bottles...
Thanks Dan! Yeah, couldn't pass those beauties up. Cheers🥃
Fun! Welcome home. The RIC Port Charlotte for sure. And a Cage Bottle - Longrow or Hazelburn.. Great video’ My trip to Islay and Campbeltown is in 5 weeks - getting excited!
Thanks! 5 weeks is no time at all, the trip will be upon you before you know it! Good picks for the bottles. Lots of great whisky and adventure awaits you! Can't wait for you to go. Cheers🥃
Great choices and congrats on hitting the 1K subscriber mark!
Thanks Henri, I really appreciate it! Cheers🥃
Great stuff. Unfortunately here in Australia we have a 2 litre limit then get hit by extraordinary taxes :(
Thanks David. Ouch, that's a low limit. I was lucky our 1.14litre limit was enforced. Potentially a $68 tax on a $100 bottle in my province so I would have been hurting. Hoping for some loosening of these restrictions on your side and mine in the future. Hope you've got some good Aussie whisky in your collection. Cheers🥃
Great selection. Looking forward to reviews of these bottles.
Thanks! Yeah, I've got quite the backlog developing here, don't I? Better start drinking :) Cheers🥃
Yes, trip advice for my first tour hopefully later this year please!
Can't wait for you to go Marc! It was magic. I'll see if I can put together a coherent Islay tips video in the future. Cheers🥃
That is amazing that you were able to fill your own bottle. I am hoping to make a trip there someday!
You gotta get there! It was a dream come true really. And it was a really cool experience filling my own bottles. Already tempted to plan a return trip, but my bank account wants a word with the planning department haha. Cheers 🥃
Hey Matt, new to the channel, fully subscribed now, loved to see what you purchased as a whisky fan myself, cheers buddy and all the best, pete.👍
Hey, Thanks for subscribing Pete, and for commenting! Us whisky people are always curious what bottles others are bringing home haha, glad you enjoyed the video. Cheers 🥃
Het Matt, thanks for sharing your visit and experiences down there. It looks like you managed to bring home some real gems. Looking forward to your review of some of these bottles. Cheers!
Happy to share my travels with you Rohit, thanks for watching along! Certainly some beauty bottles on that table and lots of fodder for reviews. Cheers🥃
Fantastic tour & great raid on bottles/samples, Matt...looking forward to hear from their tastings...What I would bring back ? Like you mostly things I would have "tried before I buy", handfilled ones for sure, at least in some iconic distilleries (but all are, aren't they ?) with indeed, money wise, clever solution, some 20 to 50 cl ones rather than 70 cl, but also some merch, some oatcakes, etc...Virgin oak & wine casks wise I'd be more reluctant to pick, but you'll never know....Thanks for the info about Iain, but I'm afraid it'll be hard for me to get there before the end of the year, as it is not a cheap trip (Islay & Campbeltown in particular). Slainte & God bless Canadian customs ! 🤣 🥃
Thanks Greg! I had your advice on not buying anything I could potentially get here in my head when considering purchases. Small bottles are a saving grace on the pocket book. I LOVE oatcakes, but the ones I had at Laphroaig were like savoury cardboard haha. As a rule these days I try to only purchase wine casks I've tried first as they are often suspect. Canadian Border Services Agency is the unexpected hero! Haha, Cheers🥃
New to your channel. I think you do a fabulous job, becoming one of my favorites
Thank you so much Mario! That's really kind of you to say. Welcome here! Cheers🥃
Nice haul, you had the luck of the Irish with customs😂. When i visit Islay i defenitly want to bring something back from Kilchoman, Ardbeg and Caol Ila.
Thanks! Customs with the unexpected assist! Nice picks! Kilchoman and Caol Ila had good selection for distillery exclusives. Weirdly Ardbeg was sold out of BizarreBQ(which was good) but had Heavy Vapours CR(which was disappointing for the price asked). They were the only one on Islay with no distillery exclusives while I was there. Still, a fun place though! Cheers🥃
@@whiskyonthewestcoast yeah, Ardbeg is getting a cultstatus in which people buy their products without even questioning if they get value for their money, I like what their making don't get me wrong, but i still want to taste it first before i buy something.
Amazing purchases! Glad you lucked out with Custom’s!! I would love to hear more about the Bowmore!! Great juice that is usually diluted and coloured! Would be interesting to contrast and compare
Thanks Lars! I'm really excited about what I found at Bowmore, as I'm sure you could tell. It does seem to be the truth, that core range does the distillery no favours. Dreaming of the day when they go full Bruichladdich and bottle NCF, NCA and at 50%. Surely I must be off my rocker. It's just ight and day between what comes out of the cask vs what comes out of the Bowmore bottle. Cheers 🥃
Couldn’t agree more on what Bowmore can do! The 21 yo Aston Martin was fantastic! But overpriced! The 22 was even worse!
@@larsrogers3081 That 21 Year was incredible, alas the price.
Gotta love 'understanding' Immigration officials - God bless our men & women in blue, eh?! For me, I'd love to do a deep dive into Bunnahabhain. No visit to Glen Scotia? Sinner! :P. For a follow up video I'd love to know how far out it was that you started to plan things, how you stayed (Air B&B, hotel, hostel?). Did you rent a car / use public transport? Budgeting? Etc, etc, etc. There's no Timmies over there to pop in for a bagel & a coffee! I was a student in Edinburgh many years ago. Gotta love that view from the top of Arthur's Seat. :)
As one of those in "Blue" I appreciate what they Immigration officers do, and your sentiment, so Cheers to that.🥃 Bunnahabhain has such a range of delights to explore. You really can dive deep. Cool to hear you have a personal connection to Edinburgh and have good memories of it. great idea for a video, I'll work on trying to come up with something coherent to say haha. As for Glen Scotia? I did visit, but no tour. I tried the 11 year White Port bottling for the malts festival and would have grabbed a bottle if I had the room. We didn't have time for a tour at Glen Scotia, but I did have a fantastic experience meeting the distillery manager Iain McAlister. Wonderful guy, and at some point I'll have to share the story of our brief encounter. Cheers🥃
Awesome Matt! Sounds like you guys had a great time and brought back many memories and bottles :) Cheers my friend, enjoy your fantastic whisky!
Thanks man! We had a trip we won't soon forget. It's a place that once you visit you immediately begin to start planning your return again. Cheers.
You got away with that ❤ . Get outa here 😂 ,your stock scared me excellent...I don't have your spunk 😅
Haha, thanks! I was more than a little worried coming home with that haul. I'm not sure if it was spunk or just blind luck! Cheers 🥃
Great job Matt. Can’t wait until your at Whisky Club again so we can chat more!
Thanks Clayton! It'll be great to be back. Less than 2 weeks until event #30! Cheers🥃
Wow, now you're spoiled for choice. Great selection of the liquid gold Matt. Enjoy it while it lasts (however long, or more likely briefly it may be 😅). Can't wait for more Islay related content. Cheers!
Spoiled is certainly the word I'd use. It'll last me a good while, I hope :) More Islay on the way soon, that's for sure. Cheers🥃
Awesome Haul, glad you got thru the custom like a champion!
Thanks, you and me both are glad about that customs thing! Cheers🥃
Impressive haul…proud of you Matt!
It is quite the haul, isn't it! And thanks! Cheers🥃
Cheers Matt interesting to see your picks, glad you had an experience you enjoyed . No idea on what I personally would have brought back . You make the call one the day .
Thanks James! I'm sure you would've found your own gems on Islay or in Campbeltown. A wonderful experience. Cheers🥃
Great picks!! Starting to plan a trip next spring. Two questions.
1. Did you do a self guided trip or book a multi-day tour w a company?
2. What would you suggest one should budget for a 7 day trio(5 days of tours). Obviously varies on where you go what you do and but. But any guide is great!
Cheers!!
Very nice haul! If I ever had the chance to go to Scotland, I'd risk going over the limit too. It's a once in a lifetime opportunity to try some of these rare bottles. I'd also be interested in hearing about how you packed all these. Did you have a suitcase or box just for them?
Yeah, I'd say it's worth it to go over the limit while being hones about it. Once in a lifetime trip, gotta make it count. In regards to bringing them back, I did so in my luggage. This is my response to someone else below. So I brought a bottle from Canada to share with those I met. I packed that in my luggage using an inflatable wine shipping sleeve. You can purchase them online from Amazon or others. If you pack them with you they can be quite handy. I wrapped my bottles in socks, then put them in the inflatable shipping sleeves. Then I covered the bottom, sides and top of the luggage with clothing, sort of like a bed to protect from the outside. I lined them up inside this bed and then covered it up with more clothes on the open side. Repeat for however many suitcases you need. I'm sure at some point I'm going to lose a bottle but so far so good. Cheers🥃
Some great bottles there! I was in Campbeltown last month, I picked up the same caged bottle of Springbank - would be interested to hear your thoughts if you open it before I do.
We're Cage Bottle twins I guess then, eh? I'm at a loss with where to start but if I get a good grasp on it I'll be sure to do a review. Cheers🥃
Great selection of drams! Lots of good times to come ! Where did you enter Canada? I have been advised to come back via Alberta by others.
Thanks! We landed in Calgary, which I was glad for as I'd heard similarly that it's best to do so there. My understanding is that Alberta's duty is lower than the other provinces. Cheers 🥃
you can actually bring n close to 40 liters you just have to claim it and pay the duty and taxes, the problem most people get into is not claiming the extra booze and getting hit with a fine which is pricey. but generally the duty and taxes are pretty reasonable.
Thanks for correcting me on this, you are absolutely correct and are able to bring more in, you just have to pay for it potentially. And don't lie, because the fines just aren't worth it. I did declare everything because, well, integrity matters. It does seem to matter quite a bit what province you land in to an extent. If you land in Alberta it looked like the cost on a bottle, aside from the Federal excise tax, is $13. In B.C. if a bottle costs $100 and is cask strength, the extra tax is around $68(been hit with this one before at a land crossing). I was dreading a situation like that one. And I'm by no means an expert in this subject of importation, so I could be getting some things wrong here. Either way, perhaps if I ever get to go again I'll not worry quite as much. Cheers🥃
You should fly through Calgary! The tax is less in Ab than BC
That was the plan Lars, and thankfully didn't need to resort to paying tax :) I'll always try to route myself through Calgary on my way back from Scotland.
We’re going to Islay in a few weeks. How’d you transport your haul back? Suitcase?
nice collection. How did you pack these in your luggage? I have heard similar customs stories in San Francisco. Enjoy.
Thanks Dileep! Hope you are on your way to Islay soon! Cheers🥃
@@whiskyonthewestcoast I usually take bubble wrap and tape with me. Usually only 4 bottles in a suitcase with clothes for additional padding.
I'm shocked to hear that Canada only allows barely over a liter to bring through customs. In the UK it's 10 liters (~13 1/3 bottles) per person ( ! ) - Did you sent some home via mail? (if the cusoms want a 300% mark up - that's probably less exepensive)
It's pretty bad in all honesty. I brought it with me because to sip it would assure the duty being levied, and I likely wouldn't see the parcel for over a year in B.C. In Canada Alberta is effectively the only province you can import into. I brought it home in my luggage and declared my overage. Perhaps landing in Alberta helped my case as the duty isn't as extreme there. Either way, I'm feeling lucky. Cheers🥃
Matt have you ever tried to ship anything back from abroad? We are heading to Ireland and rather than hauling everything around with our luggage, curious if there’s a way to ship some back? (We live in Ontario)
Hi Virginia! I have not tried to ship anything back from abroad to B.C. If I did try it though I wouldn't do it to Ontario. I have heard a number of tremendous horror stories about doing just that as I believe it technically needs to be "imported" through an LCBO process. As a result shipping from out of the country back to Ontario can be excessively expensive and time consuming. Not impossible, but personally, the only province I would attempt it in is Alberta(as a resident) as the cost is per bottle not a percentage. I looked earlier today at the cost of $60 worth of wine being shipped into Ontario and it was an import cost of just under $150. Yikes. Luggage would be the best way by far in my opinion if traveling to Ontario. Hope this helps you plan accordingly. Cheers 🥃
Can I ask how can you get the bottles back home? I mean, don't afraid of brocken bottle in the plane?
Yeah you can definitely ask! I was certainly a bit nervous and worried something would break but I packed them really well. I put the into socks, then into inflatable bottle shipping sleeves and laid them between a bed of clothing on either side. It's worked so far, though eventually I'll lose a bottle. Hope this helps! Cheers 🥃
What!….. No Gin😢😅
It's in the suitcase I left behind in Scotland :p Cheers John🥃
What did you use for transportation around Islay? I’m wanting to visit with my wife but find it difficult to rent a car if we both want to drink everything there is to offer!!
Great question. I don't think there is a perfect answer. We rented a car on Islay. My partner likes everything but the taste of whisky, so I was in luck. They do have driver drams for designated drivers at each distillery so that's pretty helpful. You can get around by bus but it's rather limiting if you want to hit multiple distilleries in a day. Many people pre-booked taxi's(only way to get a taxi apparently). This is a great solution, the only problem is I saw more than one group leave a tasting early to catch a cab as we were cracking another cask. If you both love whisky, I'd suggest swapping days for DD duty, and collecting the drivers drams when you're on "duty." Otherwise pre booking taxis seemed to work for others. Hope this helps! Cheers🥃
@@whiskyonthewestcoast thank you!
