Adrenalize had a couple of excellent songs: Tonight, and White Lightning being the best of them. Retroactive (the followup) is a criminally underrated b-sides album from 1993. It was the heaviest thing they had released since Pyromania. Songs like: Desert Song, Fractured Love, Action, She's Too Tough, Only After Dark, Ride Into the Sun, From the Inside, Ring of Fire and I Wanna to Be Your Hero. I can do without Two Steps Behind, Miss You in a Heartbeat and When Love and Hate Collide.

I totally agree with your comments on both, Adrenalize and Retroactive. In fact, if Retroactive had been included in the list, it would be my number 2, after Pyromania.

For any Pyromania fans out there, it's definitely worth checking out the deluxe edition. The bonus disc is a live show from the LA Forum in 1983. The Pyromania songs sound supercharged, and it's great hearing Phil Collen shred over the On Through the Night and High and Dry songs. But the whole band is on fire. You can hear the excitement surrounding them at this point in their career and the energy they are generating. They sound young, hungry and on top of the world. I really feel if this had been released back in the day as a standalone live album it would today be considered a classic, up there with Strangers In the Night or Made in Japan. It's fucking great.

      1. High n Dry (love the pete willis/Clark era)
      2. Pyromania ( albums 1-4 are perfect albums. i love all the songs. )
      3. On Through The Night (i wish they did a remastered version of this album, it needs it)
      4. Hysteria (a bit overplayed compared to the rest, but i'm still not sick of it, but hence it's #4)
      5. Adrenalize (a near perfect album, i think if they would of taken out 2 tracks it be stronger)
      6. X (def lep goes pop, i thought it was a pretty good album. now, everyday, 4 letter word, love don't lie are all great songs, but why they were talking so much shit is because they had 3 songs in a row that weren't great which are gravity, cry and a girl like you. but they bring it back with scar and let me be the one.)
      7. Songs from the Sparkle Lounge (similar to X in my mind, a solid album with a few fillers like X)
      8. Yeah (Def Lep always knew how to do covers well, and this shows it. But some of the song choices i didn't care for)
      9. Slang (What's good on this album i think is very good, and what's bad is very bland. When Pete was kicked out, i felt they lost their balls a bit, when they lost Clark, they lost their edge, and with Viv, he's good, but they were at a stage where they were no longer the young guys, they were dads, older men, and it be silly for them to pretend they aren't.)
      10. Def Leppard (continuing the trend of making uneven albums. More bad then good, and this goes with the next album on the list. Their is a difference. I think with this album they are comfortable in their shoes, and are just doing what they want, while with Euphoria/Slang/X, they were lost. They wanted to be relevant, and couldn't find that road. They tried to be experimental, then back to their roots, then tried to bring in the best writers/producers at the time to no avail.)
      11. Euphoria
      12. Retroactive (left overs from past albums, and they feel like leftovers to me.)

T.Rex's 20th Century Boy is one of the heaviest anthems of the 70s, what a killer riff! Bolan had a massive metallic guitar tone at the time (Tanx era, late '72-early '73, you can hear it on Children Of the Revolution, Jitterbug Love, The Groover, Midnight). Girlschool covered it too, Placebo as well feat. Bowie live, but nothing like the legendary original.

I don't really listen to Def Leppard anymore, but back in the day surprisingly, I loved Pyromania, and subsequently checked out High 'N Dry and On Through The Night, and liked the former but not the latter.
Def Leppard decided, appropriately enough, in around 1984, to declare that they are not and never have been heavy metal (ala "We have never been at war with Eurasia" etc).
Granted, they were a more polished and commercial version of metal, but the first three albums were definitely metal after a fashion. At least by early 80s standards.
I think a lot of bands eschewed being labeled metal because they thought the term would limit their commercial and critical appeal.

When Pyromania came out in 1983, EVERYONE was listening to that album. It ruled the airwaves, even though other bands also released some of their best albums the same year, many of which have held up better over time:
    Thin Lizzy: Thunder and Lightning
    Motorhead: Another Perfect Day
    Metallica: Kill 'em All
    Mercyful Fate: Melissa
    Iron Maiden: Piece of Mind
    Slayer: Show No Mercy
    Black Sabbath: Born Again
    Fastway: Self-titled
    Savatage: Sirens
    Accept: Balls to the Wall
Gary Moore: Victims of the Future
On a side note, I still remember the first time I saw Def Leppard at Legend Valley in Columbus Ohio, on a bill that included Ted Nugent, J. Geils Band, Scorpions, and Blackfoot. Def Leppard was virtually unknown at the time (pretty sure it was their first U.S. tour), and I remember someone brought a home-made banner with names of all the performing bands, and they spelled the band's name "Death Leopard!" I even found their set list from that show online. How's this for a quick, barn-burning set:
    1) Hello America
    2) It Could Be You
    3) It Don't Matter
    4) Answer to the Master
    5) Medicine Man
    6) Rock Brigade
    7) Rocks Off
    8) Wasted

One of the things I love so much about the Sea of Tranquility crew is the way they (especially Pete) convince you to go back and listen to stuff you have dismissed.
I always liked "High and Dry" and "Pyromania" but dimissed "On Through The Night" as garbage.

I remember Def Leppard coming to prominence in the U.K. I bought the original EP on Bludgeon Riffola. At the time it was them and Maiden (who played at a local pub to me - The Ruskin Arms where I also gigged with my band) leading the charge of the New Wave of British Heavy metal and the first albums were hotly awaited. Both released, and I think in the U.K. Maidens was better received. They then supported AC/DC (Leppard) and Judas Priest (Maiden) on their respective routes to the top. Only gigs I have been to where the support act filled the house as well as the main act! But I agree with you guys here that after Pete Willis left Leppard they lost something and my interest also wained after Hysteria. Did enjoy seeing them on that tour though. Great memories seeing these bands rise to prominence back in the day.

1)High And Dry-All the great power of the band on here with the vocals bass great guitar work and drums and production. It has it all. And it rocks at it's highest of high levels!!!
I have it on vinyl and when the side one ends with No No No and if you forget to pick up your turntable tonearm which I don't have automatic pick up on mine it goes into the trail-off wit "No No No" still going till I pick tonearm up. I love that how the record and turntable does that.💖 So there ya have it.🎤🎸🎶👍
2)Pyromania- Rock Of Ages, Photograph, Die The Hunter, Billy's Got A Gun etc such a good follow up to the previous album that keeps you engaged as did the previous. Love it. Have it on vinyl. It rocks heavy!
    3) On Through The Night- Definitely a nice album and when mention some production of like southern rock of Molly Hatchet and reminded me too of Georgia Satellites actually and they got some catchy enjoyable rock songs of the emerging band with that great power rock sound and it's only their debut. They would be even heavier on the next two albums. And yea a very young Joe Elliot at the time of this record. The band was younger. I own it.
4)Hysteria- Pop and rock catchy good listening songs. Good beating drums and Joe with good singing. The guitar work is pretty good and yeah alot of rocky danceable songs reminds me of my old club dance days. I like it and still put it on when I need a need an old feeling rush to stay up. I'm ok with it. I have it on vinyl.
    5) YEAH- It is a better record of covers and T.Rex song is great. And I grew up during the 60's and 70's. Love it also Lynne. And Badfinger's No Matter What and alot of stuff on it. I do have it and like what they did on it. I got it on cd.
6)Songs From The Sparkle Lounge- Heard it and need to have it. It has some catchy rock stuff and decent sound. And makes it a fairly good album.
    7) Adrenalize- It tries to but misses with me and that pop slick stuff I don't need with those unmemorable songs. Recorded it on cassette.
8)Def Leppard(2015)-Don't have it. I listen online and find a few songs ok in rock songs and the rest yea stop all these ballads geez.
9)Euphoria - I did get it to like Lynne who doesn't have it ,hoping Vivian would make it a really good album back in their good days and it is where it rocks to a certain degree but nothing grabs you like the earlier albums for some reason that I think I will hum when it comes to Def Leppard song. I do have it and I haven't gave it alot of listens over time. It just hasn't been a go to album. But maybe it could once in a while. Have it on cd.
10)X-The attempts to do anything on this album is criminal for band to fall of a crappy album IMO with exception to the tear jerk ballad Long Long Way To Go that Joe Elliot and company could have released as a single without doing the rest of the album. I don't want it and I don't own it. Heard it online and didn't make through it. Snip tracked it.
11)Slang-The sense to become alternative with Vivian Campbell. Excuse me? It just didn't do it for me and whoa did I find it unlistenable. I have it on cassette. I think still I would dispel in not wanting it anymore.
**Honorable Compilation Mention: Retroactive** Desert Song starts it off with a Zepp Rainbow feel and Joe and the band that make it sound as their own. Fractured Love a building up to the heaviness. Action a very nice heavy Sweet cover. She's Too Touch another heavy rocker. Only After Dark a just heavy rocker sort of catchy. Ride Into The Sun starts of with piano then goes to heavy with good guitar from Steve Clark. From The Inside. A take on drug abuse with ballad of some Irish of decent.. Take it in or leave it. Ring Of Fire. A just continuing rocker that isn't too bad. I Wanna Be Your Hero(original version) goes well a fairly good rocker. Miss you In A Heartbeat(Electric Version) not that bad. When Love And Hate Collide(Ballad redone version with piano)
No matter what of the about 14 tracks the 10 first make it a decent album with the other 4 just decent fillers perhaps. But an underrated batch of songs in the archives to have had a decent album after Hysteria and before Adrenalize. Heard online and need to have it.

I think Pyromania is a fantastic album that got played out because of the hits, but really, if you could erase the memory of hearing 'Photograph' and some of the hits ad naseum and start fresh, it's a fantastic album and it does incorporate some of the style from 'High and Dry'. After Pyro though, 'Hysteria' has a few good tracks, but they were a different band completely, one that I never bought another album from.

I remember when they played 'Hello America' during the gig, some of us were wondering about them maybe selling out and leaving us behind for bigger things... as you do when you're 16 and a band is at the centre of your musical universe.
