Lovely work here. I just bought a '51 to restore myself but it's a little worse for wear than your one was. The design of these bicycles are magical, so elegant
What a beautiful machine. I loved that you kept so much of it original, a new coat of paint will be necessary eventually but to see it so close to its original glory is wonderful. Thanks for posting!
That poor thing still needs a ton of TLC (Truck Loads Of Cash) to be 100% again. It's all original but when the condition is this bad that doesn't matter any more as it doesn't have the same desirability as it once did. Condition is everything to collectors but if this was just a daily driver type bike then most people probably wouldn't care. At least this got some love and is all in one piece again. It's too bad that the paint can't be fixed to the original colour but it is what time and wear and tear have made it. This is a true survivor. Thank you for sharing this with us.
+Jim Zucker That would only stop further rust from occurring not remove the rust without harming the original paint, as demonstrated in the video, so really that would be the next step after soaking said rusted parts in the oxalic acid,.
I admire mechanical skills. I am taking lessons from you. Thank you for all of your information and help. By the way the music's just fine hip hop forever😂😂❤
Beautiful! I picked up some good tips. I just picked up an 80s vintage Benotto mixte form the thrift store and wanted to preserve the finish as much as possible. I guess I'd better get some linseed oil.
Damn fine work, sir. Both musically and restoration-icly. That's not a word but whatever. Very interesting to watch and final comparison shots were perfect.
Nicely done! So many would have blasted this paint, you saved the bike for sure. I like how you used original style round head screws and square nuts. So many don't understand that the little things make it correct. I have this same bike, but Schwinn Excelsior, missing the chain guard and front light.
Very beautiful bike I'm glad that color came out in all it's former glory for a 1941 Schwinn one thing I've noticed though but you probably couldn't get the Chrome to shine are those hard to find if it's what I'm thinking for those rims are Lobdell it looks as though the Chrome didn't come out are those rims if they did you would see the written scripted word Lobdell on those rims but other than that that is one beautiful bicycle.
I would seriously love to talk with you about my project. I am about to start restoration on a 1951 Schwinn Black Phantom. I have a few questions, and you did amazing on this one.
@@gabe2968...... Sorry for the delayed response. I am getting it back to operating condition. Cleaning it up, not going to repaint it. I want it to show the age but keep it as original as possible.
Why didn’t you spray a clear topcoat and only used linseed oil? Can I spray a clear 2K topcoat (in can) on my 2009 aluminium bike? I like to preserve the original paint so I cleaned it up (rubbing compound and polishing paste and finished it off with wax. It looked better. BUT, do you think it is ok if I spray a clear topcoat to make it shine and be permanently protected for a few years? Kinda restore it to its prev beauty.
Where were you able to find this bicycle in the rusted condition it was in? Did you buy it from a person in that condition? Or did you have this bicycle passed down in your family?
I don't get it - how can the paint which has already chipped off leaving just the rusty steel frame be recovered? Are you sure the red isn't just the rust that turned a different hue from the process? Anyways looks good, only the music was a bit annoying and unfitting. And good job on keeping the one piece crankset and bottom bracket instead of putting in modern plastic crap.
Hi David, Great video and cool beat. How long did you leave the frame exposed to the Oxalic acid? I have a Colson looptail with OG paint and badge that I want to restore/preserve the paint as much as possible. I want to clean it up without damaging the paint. Thanks in advance.
Hey Dave thanks! From what I've seen, you can leave painted pieces like your frame in oxalic acid for as long as you want. It shouldn't affect the paint at all (other than removing rust stain from it). If you're using a fairly concentrated solution with hot water, then an hour does wonders. Sometimes it takes longer - just depends how much rust you're trying to remove. Just check on it every 30 minutes or so and see how it works for you! 👍
so...restoration or deep clean? you went to the trouble of acid washing the rust but decided not to paint it? hmmm you do realize it´s going to rust in a few months all over again?
Lovely work here. I just bought a '51 to restore myself but it's a little worse for wear than your one was. The design of these bicycles are magical, so elegant
Fantastic job, love the way you have retained the original paint finish.
Oh I love those handlebars!!!!
Awesome and sweet bike and restoration!!

NO new paint.....you leave original bikes original if they represent at all...
that is beautiful! i love that you left the patina!
*Oh my God! Such a beautiful result!🤩 Thank you very much for preserving this bike and bringing it back on the road again!👏🏻😎💙💛*
Tell me why this playlist u have goin is the most epic vibes ever..got me pulling bike parts out building. love the video! salute.

So Happy to see the original paint History left on it!
Beautiful job preservation better than restoration, it's only original once 👍
you can use owatrol oil to refresh the paint, similar result with metric ton less work. great job btw!!
what would be the best way to use and apply the owatrol oil? brush & sand paper? or soak the components?

Nice hope you make more of these videos.
Please explain the acid 100:1 mass ratio if you can, I have a Raleigh that I want to restore but conserve as much paint as I can. Great video.
Dude works fast.

I have a 1951 Schwinn Western Flyer. What are your plans? Customise it or restore it?

Could watch everyday.
What did you end up doing with the bike?
Awesome job
Exelente trabajo , sin reemplazar sus componentes originales!!!. Desconocia la marca. De que origen es y que rodado tiene la bicicleta???. Gracias
What a beauty!!!
Nice job
Cool. Wondered what happened in the shop as I marveled at the subharmonics! Daily rider?
Ha!
Actually this one ended up getting sold to a collector - he probably rides it though! It was a great bike.
We have this bike until now hehe
Lovely 💯 $trait vintage ✊🏽Right on

Beautifull work
Great editing!
Hi, great video! How did you clean/restore the drivetrain, hub and wheels? thanks
Nice bike.
Amazing!!!!!
❤
This makes me sad because I rebuilt an old Schwinn and my grandpa ran it over
Coisa linda de Bicicleta 👏😍
my dream bike
very kool
And what about the water that will remain in the fork and frame? The bicycle will start to rust from the inside.
"G" is deep into 41 territory
Speed 1.5 .. Nice music 👍
This video is extremely helpful! I just purchased a lady's 1965 Hollywood and it's covered in rust. Is oxalic acid easy to purchase over the counter?
Yes, from any hardware store. Same as wood bleach.
Can you use that acid on bare frame?
Says he does not have access to oil or heat that you can get at any stoe but has access to oxalic acid.
David, how many grams of oxalic acid per liter of water? best regards.
I didnt know you can do that
can you please tell me the recipe of chemical applicate and have a great day
Is it possible to make those lights work again? 05:40
What saddle is that?
can u explain what is the oxid acid?
I regret painting my vintage bike now

Haha, No one is learing anything from me on The Cabe, but thx for the kind words.
Will the Oxalic acid cook the decals?

👌👏👍🇲🇽

Should've used a song from 1941
Nice job cleaning it up - now you need to restore it. (ie: To restore is to make like new again as from the factory).
It would be a lot better if you had good music for the time period.
That Bicycle is so clean, the Pope himself, would proud to ride it around the Vatican
The music definitely spoiled this video.
great learning video, but the music is .................... well.....................
Enjoyed the video; had to watch muted. Horrible audio.
Great restoration, bad music choice
Love your work......... HATE THAT DAMN NOISE IN THE BACGROUND
