given that you both seem to have completely forgotten who Jean is and completely missed his character arc in the first 16 episodes he was always the guy challenging Eren during training and had a desire to join the military police. After Marco's death he finally realised that he needs to avenge the fallen and decided to join the scouts. Jean is a practical guy who doesnt want to die a meaningless death and when he heard Eren hurt Mikasa he doesnt know if Eren can control his titan power and therefore doesnt want him or his friends to be randomly killed by Eren losing control. He challenges Eren because he needs to, Eren is an emotional person who loses focus easy (almost dying in ep 5 when he got mad). He therefore gives Eren that pep talk as a way to communicate to Eren that they all need him to perform and not lose control, they are all counting on him greatly as he is considered humanity's hope. You both seem to hate it that Eren is called out by people but people need to ensure that Eren wont fail since everyone relies on him.
Jean is one of the stars of season one even though you dont remember his name somehow, please start paying attention to the small characters because they are important to the story even if season 1 focuses mainly on Eren Mikasa and Armin.
The story told about the cannibal clan is actually a 17th century legend, and the clan chief's name was Sawney Bean.

34:37 -- When Eren went to punch Mikasa, she dodged and Eren hit the roof. A broken fragment of a roof tile cut Mikasa's cheek then, and a visible scar from that wound remained on her face permanently. Jean is referring to that fact in this scene.
Fun fact: Unlike the anime, when Eren meets his friends and colleagues after having joined the Exploration Corps, they do not have the uniform of said squad, while in the manga they do have it when Eren is in that same scene. with all of them 🤔🤔🤔
Jean's talk was needed and very reasonable. You find it annoying because you only care about the main characters, but you will learn to see things from different characters' perspectives with this show.. That is, if you pay enough attention
Eren didn’t get taller. Levi is just a really short dude. This is the first time you really get to see him compared to others. Usually people have been sitting down in scenes Levi has been in up until now.
