    We did the same thing when we bought our house 3 years ago we had a 100% blank slate for our front yard, we have since planted thornless blackberries, blueberries, haskap berries and sunchokes along with flowers and mints for tea. It really is awesome!

    I like the BlackBerry theory. Told my husband I would like to surround our five acres with hawthorn trees

      hawthornes are good, try jujube too they are also thorny and have decent fruit

    Ten years ago we ripped out the ugly shrubs that were planted in front of our house, and put in a raised bed and and planted four blueberry bushes in their place. This was before I had kids. Now every early to mid June, my youngest son gets excited about helping harvest the blueberries in front of the house. He's very interested in gardening.

    Love it! We have a garden in our backyard and are slowly starting to ease our way around into the front yard with the edibles. We figure if we do it gradually and get people used to it they will be less likely to notice and say anything, lol!! Thanks!! -Lea

      When you showed the shot of the goumi berry I thought it looked just like our Elaeagnus bushes. I googled goumi berry and found that the elaeagnus are in the same family. We have an entire hedgerow of Elaeagnus. I wonder if the fruit on our bushes can be eaten? I'll have to look into it!! Thanks again!! -Lea

    • @PermacultureHomestead
      @PermacultureHomestead  5 років тому

      yes elaeagnus are edible, process out the seeds and make fruit leather in a dehydrator, add honey or cane sugar w/ your pulp

    Watch the elderberry-they tend to send lots of shoots underground and spread very easy to the point you may start to see them in the yard- mowing usually controls those but it could choke out your other plants if not careful- cutting shoots just below dirt usually does it!

    • @PermacultureHomestead
      @PermacultureHomestead  5 років тому

      the do spread for sure and yes, i do mow them, been working w/ eberry for years now i love it, we are like tight friends.

    I was hesitant to plant elderberry in my front yard because it looks a little wild and I tend to let things do what they want but I did and it will soon look like a jungle.

    • @PermacultureHomestead
      @PermacultureHomestead  5 років тому +1

      they are a bit wild but easy to maintain for sure, you can really shape them to fit your style, hedge, tree or small shrub. thanks for checking it out tonight

    My neighbors across the street have a very busy front yard but nothing is edible. However, they do have a splendid back yard that grows tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers! I guess I can do this too and not feel bad about how the front looks...perhaps a few paving stones will work for me...

    Nice. I going to take out two 6 ft ligustrum trees and I think from watching your video that pomegranate trees would be a good replacement.
    On the side of the house I replaced shrubs with blueberries last year.
    Really enjoy all your permaculture videos.

    Very nice. The front yard can be tough to balance cosmetics with food forest. I am trying to create a privacy edible property border myself. Everything in my front yard is edible, but it still has to look nice for the neighbors :) I'm in your same zone 8, but on the west coast so I have paid close attention to your videos. Thanks!

    I am trying to find more details about letting brambles trellis on boxwood but I can’t find anyone else that’s done it but you! Any more details about how to do that? I’m in 7b

    • @PermacultureHomestead
      @PermacultureHomestead  5 років тому

      its as easy as letting the brambles grow up the plants, they use the box woods as a trellis system, very little maintenance.

    Are you not concerned that the roots will stop up your septic tank?

    • @PermacultureHomestead
      @PermacultureHomestead  Рік тому

      The roots of both of those plants won't go deep enough to hit the septic tank.
