    Spraying neem oil on plants prevents pests as it is a natural pesticide . Mix it with water and spray on your plants directly . Works for me every time 😊😊

    We enjoy the information and the style with which you present it so much Siloe. We have 2 young boys who were left in silent thought at the end of this episode. Thank you for encouraging us all to embrace a deeper more profound connection. Haha and please understand that for those 2 to be moved to still silence so early in the day is a significant achievement!!!

      @suburban homestead: I think so too, but I find many (if not most) people don't have that connection to nature and simple living anymore, which is a shame. From people I know from the city where I used to live, I often get the question "is gardening worth it?", and what they invariably mean is, is it financially worth it. That's a question I never ask myself or keep a tally of because gardening gives me more than money could ever buy, and I can't imagine doing anything else ever again. They seem to have a hard time understanding that or relating to why I'd invest so much time and energy into something that, in their eyes, is only "worthwhile" if it's financially lucrative.

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  6 років тому +3

      Very true, my friend. I want to awaken in people the idea that gardening provides way more than food. Unfortunately we tend to structure our lives and activities only around financially feasible ones. While that is important, it shouldn't be the deciding factor.

    Yes! This is how I've started. My front garden is where the edible growing is at. I started pretty small (and unsucessfully) 4 years ago with tomatos. This year I have x7 small raised beds of edibles with a perimeter of bee friendly flowering plants. I'm working with the no dig method to avoid disturbing the integrity of the earth, I have learnt a lot already this year and have kept logs and photos so I can keep improving year on year.

    A garden must be appreciated through time too. There isn't a single point in time where you can sit in a garden and see all of the beauty it holds. There's always something dormant, always something waiting to take advantage of *next* week when no one else is being beautiful in that time. So to take it all in, you have to spend more than one visit.

    I too grow my food in the front yard, as the back is a cement parking pad. Fortunately I can. My daughter lives just a few blocks away but she cannot, because she lives in a neighborhood with a homeowners association. I have chickens and ducks, and again, her homeowners association will not allow it. So not a fan of other people telling me what to do with my own property.

    With this video you have changed my mind....let me explain. Last year I planted my first garden. It was small but beautiful and I could hardly believe how much this little garden help our food budget. This winter I have spent almost all my time planning and planting for a new garden that would overtake our back yard. I told my husband that eventually I would like to have all of our property plated out in edible plants and flowers. This week, in fact, I told him....I'm not sure I want to plant out the front yard....maybe we should leave it as grass. Then I saw this video...I really want to plant out the front yard...It is my south facing yard....and I want to do it NOW! All of your videos are inspiring but this one is Magical!

I also happen to be Brazilian 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦living in Canada. Only the hardy survive in my zone 3 climate, hence my love of hardy perennials. Keep up the great work!🌸

    " Even a bit wild". I really like that, that gives me hope, because my lawn really looks a bit wild right now, just started growing mixed plants after moving in new place these 3 months. My nursery was so messy in the beginning. Did the no tilling, covering weed in the lawn with cardboard box sheets and dried leaves from the residential area trees (the local administration removes dead leaves regularly, thus free stuff with close to zero effort!)

    Crop rotation, lol, so passe'. I have never rotated main crops. I have a different trick. Lets say you have to (for reasons) or want (for reasons) to plant tomatoes in the same spot each year. Exactly what I, for example, have been doing for the last 10 years. Well, no probs. What you do instead of rotation is introduce a different companion plant to your main crop each year. And no, it doesn't have to follow those companion planting charts which are all bullshit anyway. So, for instance, I will be growing my tomatoes with watermelons this year. The tomatoes are going to be in the same patch where they always have been for a decade now. But the watermelon will be a new addition. Last year the addition was kale and chard. The year before that it was pumpkins, the year before that was corn, the year before that it was - well I forget what it was so long ago...but anyway, etc, etc...See where I'm going with this?

    I find such inspiration from your garden + videos, thank you!
    I'm in the process of envisioning a few arches to incorporate in/onto my chain-link fence, very similar to what you've done here with the grape vines. I'm hoping to do something more diy/low-budget, yet sturdy (to support long-term growth). Do you had advice or recommendations for the metal arch material?
    Thank you!!

      1/2” EMT conduit lasts for a long time outside since it is galvanized. It is also bendable and is relatively cheap (it used to be even more inexpensive before the steel tariffs that were imposed, but it is still affordable.) I’m actually making really nice ones right now for my new garden, but they will only appear in a video next year or so.

    "Alimentary beauty"?
    Clearly you have no idea what you actually said in the first 6 seconds of your video! "Alimentary" pertains to the body's system for digestion and defacation--namely the "alimentary canal". Perhaps you MEANT to say 'elementary'. People should actually learn the MEANING of the words they use instead of attempting (and failing) to impress others with "flowery" speech.

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  5 років тому

      No, I certainly meant "alimentary" as a pun of "elementary beauty," since I am talking about edible landscapes. You are right this word is mostly used in biology in reference to the digestive tract, but its meaning is a bit more broad. According to Merriam-Webster, alimentary means: 1- of or relating to nourishment or nutrition, and 2- furnishing sustenance or maintenance. It's broader use is probably more arcane, but there is no reason to not take artistic license to make a pun. I agree with you that connotation is many times more important than denotation when conveying an idea, especially setting tone and mood in writing. Also, as a non-native English speaker I understand there are many times I am less than on point when conveying meaning. I hope my unconventional word choices at times are not stumbling blocks to your enjoyment of the videos.

    Love love love your work in the gardening and your videos. I started buying fruit trees last year and everything was in ugly buckets and cut up 50 gallon containers. This year things are liking more organic, nowhere near yours but it's feeling more like me. Blueberry bushes, aronia, peach, apricot, cherry and apple trees (lot of dwarfs) and even though I have kids I still feel like a proud mama watching all this grow too. Worm hotel too...lol...can't forget my little wrigglers.

    Siloe, I have been subscribed since close to the beginning, but only within the last year or so have you blossomed into an amazing channel. Yes, you are a gardening channel, but it's honestly so much more. I feel your artistry is center stage, surrounding your gardening in such a beautiful way. You are a true inspiration and I thank you for not only your hard work, but the beauty you bring to the world.

    I put in a couple of huglekultures in my zone 2 garden. They ended up becoming apartment complexes for groundhogs. So my question is, did you ever figure out a solution for the groundhogs other than cages? If so, was it burying fence or something else? Thank you. Sincerely, Jeff

    • @suburbanhomestead
      @suburbanhomestead  5 років тому

      That is sad to hear, although I don't blame the groundhogs: soft earth with organic veggies in the roof. I have not tried other methods of deterring them with much success. Fencing or cages is the only way, and yes, if you have really persistent ones, burying fence may be necessary.

    It isn't surprising that I instantly like your videos, professional to say the least too once I set upon the first one. This one takes the biscuit. Simply amazing and educational too. Your video skill is unquestionably and your planting skill and knowledge, wow what can I say? Keep it up and will be watching more videos for sure. Hope will start mine at some stage. I have a sizeable jungle in Borneo and hope to do some polyculture there one day, I can't wait for this project to start sooner. Your kind of knowledge skills would be handy there for sure.

    I can’t think of anything worse for me than to have a designer come in and plan my garden then someone else do all the work.
    No, I want to be the one with my hands in the soil, watching every tiny first leaf unfurl, every bud swell. I want to know every nook and cranny, secret and surprise my garden reveals to me as I watch over like a sentinel. I want the sun on my back, inhaling the scent of mulch, hearing the bees and smiling over how they ignore me because I’m part of the fabric of the bounty provided to them. I want the aroma of fresh basil in my nostrils as I brush past, the overblown riot of colours from roses I’ve babied through 41C days and got them through to the other side; the butterflies and their erratic flights on little works of art wings, the crickets at night and visiting birds in the day as they follow after me when I dig in the earth like the funny opportunists they are.
    If I didn’t have this, I would wither away.

    You need to grow a Paw Paw tree (asimina triloba)! They are the largest edible fruit in north America, and delicious too, think banana mixed with mango. They are cold hardy, pest free, and groundhog free:) they are so pest resistant that their leaves are dried and used to repel mosquitos and even ticks! best of all, they thrive in shade and actually prefer lower light conditions to thrive. they also stay small and maintain a beautiful conical shape without any need for trimming. they are also the only food source of the beautiful striped swallowtail. did I mention how beautiful their maroon magnolia like flowers are? yeah, you need one of these!

    Polyculture is a great option, it mimics nature and should lead to less work in the long term. There's lots of info about permaculture design showing it working in practice. Crop rotation is taken from commercial agriculture where easy or mechanical harvesting is a prime concern. In your own garden it's not so much of a consideration. Lovely garden, thanks for sharing :)
