As someone with a severely physically and verbally abusive brother I really feel for her and her attempts at maintaining a relationship with her family. It's hard to want to forgive, both love someone so much and hate everything they've done to you. Her husband was awesome in sticking up for her and I'm glad they went no contact ❤

My husband was raised to be the abuse taker of the family. If his siblings did something wrong he would be abused over it. Because he was raised this way and thought it was the "normal" he made friends that did the same thing. When we got together I helped him grow a backbone and his friends HATED me. They almost succeeded in breaking us up. His family thought they could control me like they did him. His family was harder for me to help him stand up to. We eventually got there and he is his own person and doesn't allow anyone to abuse him. However, there are still times he cannot see when someone is using him and I have to show him.

Story 1: I would have told my mom, if she posted the photo, she would not see photos or my child in person until we were ready to share photos. She doesn't need that toxicity in her life!!?

Agree. They should have kept their boundary. No mom knows to keep throwing tantrums

As a former server, if I was dating someone and they were horrible with wait staff, it would be an instant deal breaker. I get REALLY pissed off about that sort of behavior.

Story 1. OP NOT the AH. Mother is Ascon 1. If she doesn't respect your wishes now, is she going to respect any parenting rules you set for YOUR child? Sadly, time to go no contact with mum and remove mum from your surroundings or you from hers. Otherwise, every time she disagrees with anything around the grandchild, she is going to throw another tantrum, knowing she will eventually get her way. Definitely would not want to have her liok after my child. Protect your child at any cost!!!

Story 5: in North America tipping is expected (maybe not in Mexico? IDK what is or isn't expected there), and if you don't tip you're taking money away from your server, because their wages and the prices at the restaurant are set with the expectation that there will be tips. People can debate about whether that's how it should be or not, but that's the reality. Personally, the way someone treats people in the service industry makes a huge difference to me. If I was going out with a girl and she acted like this in restaurants, I would 100% dump her and explain to her that I think she's a bad person for how she treats people. And that's coming from someone who has never worked in a restaurant or any other setting where tips would be expected (or even allowed).

*Story 5: Eats Servers -* OP could tell his fiancée that she has 2 options. (1) Either she stops mimicking her family’s embarrassing behavior or he will NEVER go out to eat with HER or her FAMILY again.
If she accepts she must understand he means it + that he *will* eat out w/other mannered ppl. She can do w/e she likes just not with him.
Or (2) the weddings off. _imagine how she (+ thaf family will treat the waitstaff at their wedding._

Sorry I couldn’t be with a person who acted the way she does in a restaurant. I put myself through nursing school by being a waitress and I’d like to think I was pretty damn good at both jobs. I just retired from nursing after 35 years. I’d break up with a person like her.

Leanna, well done! Maybe it took hubby (OP) standing up for her so strongly for her to realize she had someone in her corner, or maybe seeing hubby so upset for her, made her look at how she was allowing the abuse to continue, either way, good for Leanna for stepping up for herself.

Story 5: GF and her family are garbage people. And OP is an AH for not nipping this behavior in the bud from the beginning. It's a huge red flag. He should've made up the lack of tip the first time it happened and made it clear to her that her actions were entitled, obnoxious, and cruel. If she persisted, that should've been the last date. OP needs to grow a backbone. GF's actions reflect on him as well.

Story #1 OP needs to go no contact with her mom... I don't say that lightly, but if throwing things and yelling and raising hell is her *norm* when she doesn't get her way with something as simple as a freaking picture, then she isn't safe to be around your kids... Stinks for the grandpa, but I think they both need to be told that you won't have a relationship with them until or unless that behavior is rectified. Absolutely unacceptable. I would also have called the cops on her when she was throwing things like that. She sounds freaking terrible.

As far as the girlfriend who is a nightmare in restaurants: deal-breaker. My MIL behaves like this, and my husband always thought 10% was generous. I set him straight the second we started dating. We always carry cash when we eat out with her, and over the years she has drastically calmed down because I'm not afraid to tell her to knock it off. I would NOT entertain this behavior in a partner.

If he married her, this will be a reason for divorcie later. Also, this might not be the only time she acts like this. If he finds it annoying he will later hate it and stop going out with her, which he should just stop now.

The tipping story, he says she’s a sweetest person, it’s only at restaurants, he probably doesn’t realize how shitty of a person she is. She’s probably coming to her peers. Or as they say. Sam went on the same level as she is. She’s probably nice to family. But I bet you anything she is rude to the people at the checkout counters, or anybody in retail I bet she treats you like shit all the time, he’s probably not there to see it, and when he is, he’s probably not paying attention, but she isn’t only rude to the service people, 😅 she doesn’t turn into this devil when she walks into the restaurant? And goes back to her angel self when she leaves. She probably treats everyone, she thinks she above like shit! I challenge him to hire a house cleaner, and watch how she treats them! He should pay attention, to every look every comment, is thrown at them. I’m sure he will see the real her! People that work in retail or the food industry, or humans too! And don’t deserve to be treated like shit! Just because somebody thinks they are above! And if they think that! They are not good people!

For the tipping story- I hate she doesn't tip and is rude to the staff, HOWEVER tipping culture is trash and is just the corporations' way of not paying people a livable wage. So, if everyone stopped tipping and the rich were taxed at a certain maximum, we would have a healthier working class. 💪🏽

OP not the AH for wanting girlfriend to change her behaviour in restaurants This is a huge red flag showing a nasty part of her personality. I realize this may be what she has been shown by her parents, but as an adult, she is responsible for her own actions. I would tell her you will not be going out to eat with her to restaurants, unless she can change her behaviour. As Dusty says 'pain creates change' 😏

Story 5: I see red flags on OP himself, because hes apparently been tolerating his gf treating wait staff like crap for two years now.
That says a lot about him. Id NEVER tolerate a significant other behaving like that. Its an instant deal breaker, just like when the other person is a racist or a deadbeat dad.

Story 5: Don't piss off the people who make or serve your food. Unless you like the special je ne sais quoi
of bodily fluids lend to your food & drink. Same with don't piss off your hairdresser or barber - you know the people using sharp instruments on your head. Beyond that, her behavior is abhorrent, and she comes from a crap family.
