My paternal grandmother and aunts used to live on Pemberton street, which connected Canal Street with Fishergate. Our family was Catholic and their regular church was St. Patrick's. There was also a large square, called Plumtre Square. Canal St. led on to Parliament Street, which also led on to Hockley and into the city. There were two main bus garages on Parliament Street: the Trent garage and the Nottingham City Transport garage.

I used to go down Drury hill short cut from Halstead s on George Street (newspapers) to Midland station in an A35 van sometimes in the old Austin with the wing mirrors touching each side back in the 1960s and beer and a salmon sandwich at Sevens

Pemberton Street led to Hollowstone and then Stoney Street, which, in turned led to Hockley and the Old Market Square.

It would be an amazing tourist attraction today, why were planners of the past so damn short sighted!

I don't think as many people will mourn the passing of the Broad Marsh Centre as did the passing of Drury Hill. Nice vid Paul.

Thanks Terry. I think there will be cheers and flag waving when the BMC finally is reduced to rubble. I just hope they do something better with the land this time.

I'll never forgive the city council for destroying a large part Nottingham's history. Drury Hill stood for nearly 400 years while the broad marsh centre barely stood 40 years.

Thank you so much, I'm almost 61 and have had an image from my childhood in my head for many years that I have been trying to place, it turns out to be Drury hill! My recollections are of walking from Broad Marsh station into town but the key mental image was the barber shop with the blood and bandages scroll on the wall outside.

I think it's so sad Drury Hill got demolished! the good thing is you can still see some parts of it when you tour the City of Caves, Garner's Hill.....part of the original Drury Hill is still there 🙌👌

Other citys that have these very narrow roads are often filled with indipendant shops, cool cafes and small businesses. I imagine it would have a similar vibe to Cobden Chambers, it's a shame they demolished it

That's quite the collection of Drury Hill photos and videos you've assembled there!

Every decent image I could find... and the two videos, although I only discovered the first in Sons and Lovers the other day.

You did indeed, the opening video. I still can't get my head around a Hollywood star (too be) portraying a local lad in Nottingham

I remember being able to touch both sides at one point, I was 6ft 4 at the time, that was late 60s, shame it was knocked down.

As Broad Marsh is being renovated, and Drury Hill has been uncovered, they are thinking of bringing it back.

It's criminal how wrong our supposed "betters" got it. Nottingham would have a street and area to rival the Shambles in York or Steep Hill in Lincoln and all the tourist pounds, euros, dollars and yuan that it would attract.
It is even more criminal that all that character and history was demolished for something which is itself now demolished. All that loss was for nothing.
At least part of it should be rebuilt. It wouldn't be the same of course, but in terms of character and making an attractive area, it would right something of the unforgivable wrong.

Yes, right at the old Low Pavement entrance to Broadmarsh. If you stick your head through the gap in the hoardings, you can still see a few remnants of Drury Lane

I'm disappointed they recently demolished a good portion of the old railway viaduct, adjacent to the Broadmarsh, where they've just built the new Nottingham College building. That comment about the thoughts in the mind of the council at the time, and indeed now, ring true.

It had no place in a modern city like Nottingham??? Nottingham is crying out for just this very thing.

    • @PiousMoltar
      @PiousMoltar 3 роки тому +2

Indeed, Nottingham is sorely lacking in historical features that give a city character, for the most part the oldest stuff you'll see is Victorian, which is nice, but even a fair amount of that has been destroyed and replaced with "modern" monstrosities.
