Nottingham 1902 - 2022 Comparison [With Upscaled Video]

- I recently upscaled a fascinating video of a tram ride through Edwardian Nottingham City Centre in 1902. Since doing this, I wanted to make a side-by-side comparison video of what the same city centre streets are like today!
The upscaled video can be found here - • 'Nottingham Tram Ride ...
Whilst I didn't line everything up absolutely perfectly (probably next to impossible) I did manage to line up the footage so that you are nearly always looking down the same street. Sometimes this is impossible too, as new buildings like the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre (now being demolished) get in the way, but a majority of the old streets along the tram ride are still in the same place.
I hope to bring some light into Nottinghams past and how much the city has changed in 120 years, but also to restore some loving memories people may have.
I hope you enjoy!
The route is as follows - Station Street, Carrington Street, Lister Gate, Albert Street, St. Peters Square, Wheeler Gate, Old Market Square, Long Row, Queen Street, Milton Street.

At the start of the video on the left the 1904 Midland Station building hasn’t been built! The old Midlands Goods Office on Carrington St. still has exactly the same exterior, though now a very different use. Very recognizable, even without the travel cues. As the tram turns from Long Row into King Street, you see the worst act of vandalism where Watson Fothergill’s masterpiece - the Black Boy Hotel in 1970 became Littlewoods, then BHS and now Primark. Fortunately there is still a fine Fothergill example on the Long Row/King Street corner called Queen’s Chambers
Outstanding!! Grateful for your time.
truly amazing. Thanks!
Wow amazing- thank you for bring this together
great! - i watched the original, and now it's brilliant being able to watch it again with a modern day comparison, what an experience! great job!!!
its sad to see what has been lost in the name of the car
Good job dude, cheers for uploading this. I’ve always been fascinated with looking at comparisons just like this 👍🏼 years ago I went round Carlton and Mapperley taking photos of buildings and streets that I’d found on picturethepast to analyse the changes
Thanks very much! I had a great time making it, glad you enjoyed.
Indeed Nottingham has changed a lot in the past 120 years or so. It's a crying shame, we could have had a beautiful well preserved Victorian city, but I feel we have a bit more of a janky mess of new and old.
I love the city we have, but I feel like we missed out on a lot!
Great work.! I came across the original video a while back but this is great use of it, lovely to see.
Thanks very much ☺️
You've done a great job there!
Thanks very much! 😊
The city has changed so much over the last 100 years
And not for the better either...
And in 1802 it would have been very different from 1902. Very few of the buildings seen in the 1902 film would have existed
The building demolished to make way for what is now Poundland. Oh boy. What were they thinking?
Great film so interesting to see against modern times :)
Great stuff and thanks for sharing. .I think people have done similar for some of the "Carry On..." films, showing the back-projection car scenes and where they were filmed now. In a similar vein I really like the Star Wars / Dam busters side by side comparison here; www.youtube.com/
IT WOULD'VE BEEN BETTER IF YOU HAD GIVEN US THE NAME OF THE ROAD AT THE START, SO WE COULD GET THE GIST OF WHERE IT WAS.
Read the description.
