Corn dog is not in the Wellington family for one simple reason:
Wellington/empanada/pie/calzone (and ravioli/dumpling in a closely-related-but-separate family) are "X wrapped in dough"
Corn dogs, on the other hand, are "X dunked in batter". Preparation process is significantly different. It might be convergent evolution, if you want to make that stretch, but not the same family.
Good point!!
Yeah, I'd say a corn dog is more related to fish and chips, or tempura. Korean dogs, though, those are in the Wellington family because they use a yeast dough instead of a cornmeal batter.
So your saying all family members have to be alike?
@@Chimaryywell they all have common ancestors, so yeah, in a way all relatives are the same up to a certain point. After a couple of generations the genes are "diluted" with the genes of other non-related individuals that the percentage of similarities is insignificant.
I agree with this. Wellingtons are wrapped in pastry. Cornbread batter is not pastry.
I *would* however say that pigs-in-blankets *are* indeed wellingtons, since they typically have some medium between the meat and the bread (mustard, cheese, etc). And the bread usually takes the form of some type of laminated dough (biscuit, puff pastry, etc)
A calzone is a Hot Pocket. If a Hot Pocket is a Wellington, a calzone is also a Wellington *hits gavel*
A calzone is certainly in the Wellington family. It's the one that went to live in Europe and now thinks they are fancy and cultured.
@@MrVovansim😂 YES
I came here to say the same thing.
Omg Calzone with an egg inside is one of the best pizzas. That creamy yolk mixed with the ham and mozzarella 😘
I’d argue a hot pocket is a calzone but I understand the logic
The corn dog is the next door neighbour's kid who has more in common with the Wellington family than his own, and spends most of his time there and gets invited over for family reunions and Christmases l.
Acording to the cube rule of food identification, beef wellington is a calzone, the same rule apply to pies with crust all over and corn dogs
I think Josh has a good point about corndogs being a tamal. If someone were to put a hotdog inside a tamal dough and cook it like a normal tamale, I would probably just think "wow, that's a lot like a corndog".
I love y'all. Been listening to this pod since the early days on Spotify. Y'all made my days as a prep/ line cook a bit easier lol. Laughing like a loon in front of my co workers
I can't believe that they don't like Corndogs. Their dislike of corndogs sleights me just as much as their statement "Cilantro haters just need to eat it and enjoy the experience"
Nicole doesn't like Corndogs, whereas Josh does. Don't use 'they'
Who cares if cilantro tastes vaguely of soap? Part of the charm!
On the catfish, a wet batter is just a loose dough but dredging is not a dough. Therefore like a corndog a UK style fried fish would be in the Wellington family... but sorry Nicole, fried catfish is not.
For a podcast asking if hot dog is sandwich, I feel like we went through way too many episodes before finally mentioning taxonomy
Corn dog with a sweet breakfast sausage.
But what if we make a miniature Wellington and then deep fry that on a stick with cornbread batter instead of the puff pastry?
Only if we also make a corndog with a 3lb hotdog
@@andrewwestfall65 I'm not against it.
The fact that nicole and josh would rather have a regular hot dog is so socal coded. They needed midwest representation on the panel to fight for the humble corndog!
Kings Play Chess On Friday, Generally Speaking - Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
Fletcher's corn dogs at the State Fair of Texas are the gold standard. Especially the jalapeno cheese corn dog.
The process of determining the taxonomic classification of humans was VERY hard to watch as a biochemist…but you got there, guys!
I actually love corn dogs but then again I also like BBQ sauce on my hot dogs. Sonic's corn dogs are great in a pinch.
Also I think why a toaster strudel would be closer to a beef wellington than a pop-tart because of how flakey the pastry around a toaster strudel is. I also think that that's what disqualifies a corndog as a wellington.
Please do a corn dog battle where every mythical chef has an entry!
2:48 -- did Nicole just confuse genealogists with gynecologists? 😂
20:09 NO, Corndog is on a STICK, I’ve never had PIE on a stick 😂
ravioli/dumplings are cooked with _water_. even fried pot stickers use an amount of water in the preparation process. from there we can say that there's one side of the "thing wrapped in bread" that is cooked without water and another side that is cooked with water.
Anthony Bourdain's death hit me very hard too.😥😞
His shows got me through some very dark times. I have an autoimmune arthritis disorder and fibromyalgia. So I deal with chronic pain, loss of career (nursing), loss of friendships (unable to go do stuff) and the mental anxiety/depression that comes with all that.
When I was bed bound for nearly 6 months of the year for 3 years in a row, I would binge watch any of Bourdain's shows and I ALWAYS found myself either cackling with tears down my face, or smiling from near to ear, or just able to distract me from the pain for a moment or two.
I still get a lump in my throat, a pain in my heart and tears in my eyes when I think about how HE was suffering in silence, and yet helped me so much through difficult times.
Thank you Anthony Bourdain and may your spirit soar to new heights on the other side!🤗💙
Oh and L💙VE the podcast!😍😘
I am sorry to hear about your pains :(
@@twiztidsushi 💙🤗💙
I do not understand how Nicole can like instant coffee and hate standard drip coffee, as long as the beans are fresh and good quality it can be very hard to tell drip from pour over etc
Josh going to "hot dog-klava" at the end of his tamal sideline was such pure Josh.
A frozen corndog is a popsicle. I hope they bring this up
Having pie family on top is quite genious! That's where enclosed and open pies go their separate ways
Also a there's a two branches for cooked w/a wet heat (e.g. dumplings, tamales) vs a dry/deep fried heat (pies, wellington, corn dogs)
*Genius
I love corn dogs. It's the only way I like hot dogs. I prefer Polish sausage over a hot dog if it's on a bun. I would choose the corn dog over everything else on that graphic/meme though.
FyI pop tarts are most often NOT vegetarian. Gelatin is used in the outer icing on most.
Id love to see josh make a wellington with corndog ingredients and a cordog with wellington ingredients haha
When the started talking about taquitos all I could hear was Caleb Hammer in my head: “Taquitos! More taquitos!” 😂
I’d love to see Gordon Ramsay with the twist of he can only use already processed foods from the supermarket
The real debate is Gordon ramsay is still not acknowledging you guys and a collab needs to be made 😂
If Gordon ramsay acknowledges Josh directly then Josh wins and he will have been acknowledged as a genuine culinary voice and not a food scientist. he will never let him get a point for real 😭
Potatoes cooked with salty Corned Beef is perfect with mustard.
I feel like using a certain type of hotdog or sausage is what makes all the difference with Corndogs.
Edit: idk what combo would work best, but I totally want to see the Mythical Kitchen make a bunch of delicious deferent corndogs, based on this vid and their own personal flavor preferences, then someone does a taste test to see which is best 😁
John Ritter was the first celebrity death that I cried for.....Robin Williams made me the most sad for us because of his loss.....Anthony Bourdain I was the most shocked about......Sinead O’Connor I was sad for her suffering in life.......
If a hotdog is a sandwich, why does a hotdog sandwich look nothing like a hot dog?
LOVE these podcasts! Happy yer back in the Kitchen too!
Also; "I'm not a kawaii person." Yes Josh, you are KOwaii... meaning creepy! hehehe~
25:00 I cried for Robin Williams, Heath Ledger and David Bowie 😔
Sausage rolls were missing off your Wellington family. They're the uncle you never talk about in the Wellington family.
It's the uncle that sniffs your diaper after he changed you...😑🤮
@Nitzbenyk thats super weird dude
No, they're not! A proper sausage roll is a pork product. A Wellington MUST be beef!
Pogos microwaved, then toasted in the toaster and dipped in ketchup is magical.
Ok but I really wanna see a corn dog sized beef Wellington on a stick please
I can always count on Nicole to look as lost as I feel.
Fletchers corny dogs are the best I've had, but only able to get them at the state fair of Texas, so it might be a supply/demand type thing
I prefer pate, duxelle, and beef. Sear the beef, brush with dijon. Spread pate and duxelle on your pastry, place beef, wrap and bake. Enjoy!
If it requires a pie dough does that make a wellington a meat pie
i think i need to go get a korean corn dog today
In the uk, beef Wellington is just a fancy sausage roll.
did nicole go to a korean fusion seafood boil place? cause that sounds like tteokbokki lmao
Corn dogs are the twin brother of sausage and pancakes on a stick. So if corn dogs are a wellington then sausage and pancakes on a stick are a dinner item.
Commenting for the algorithm overlords. Truthfully though, I love GMM, and the Mythical Kitchen crew. This is the best podcast EVERRRRR
But what about the duxelles? Beef Wellington has that middle layer that distinguishes it from many other "pies."
Maybe the provenance has to be based on cooking method. Wellingtonoids have to be baked. Tamales must be steamed. Corn dogs are deep-fried. Dumplings need to be steamed or boiled.
Liked on the comedic strength of the title alone. I might not even watch it, but laughing about Mr. Ramsay is good sport after all.
24:47 ironically enough mine was when the drummer from Rush, Neil Peart, died. He was my dad’s idol so I grew up viewing Neil Peart as another father figure
This whole thing gives off huge cube rule energy, and I would love to see these two go through cube rule
4:00 "everything is food" is 100% true. Absolutely everything is edible, just many, many things are only edible once
"Is the ☀️ raisin bran?" 😂
sheesh, they'll give anyone a podcast now days....and i love it :D
I would say that a Hot Pocket and a Pop Tart are definitely related, however the other 3 are so distinctly different from each other that they are not related
Being an Australian of good English stock, I can assure you that a Wellington MUST be beef. Nothing else you discussed here is a Wellington!
My granddaughter loves honey/mustard dressing in baked potatoes.
my favourite thing to do is at the beginning of the episode i look at each section in the video and their title and try to guess how they get sidetracked to each topic every time
pop tarts & toaster strudels are the same species just like a chihuahua & an Irish Wolfhound are both the same species
I LOVED THAT JOSH SAID TAMAL!!!! That’s the correct way! The correct spelling!!! YAAAAAAS!!!!!!
Is Elote on a stick just a primitive corn dog?
Hot Pockets are the epitome of a foodstuff that deserve the warm all encompassing embrace of The Beef Wellington Family.
Just saying.
Have you done beer is a salad yet?
I just want to give commiserative hugs to all the folks whose toughest celeb death was Bourdain ❤
Disneyland had a tamale hotdog a couple years ago!!!
It’s absolutely not a tamale 😂
There is only one way to settle this. GMM needs to do a Will It Tamale episode. "Corn dog: will it tamale?"
Do an episode of making a corn dog which hotdog to use and what batter to make for the best corn dog.
I must reject that a corn dog is a tamal, for tamales are steamed and corn dogs are deep fried. Maybe the same ingredients, but the texture is wildly different
Breakfast corn dogs are good though. Susage link dipped in pancake batter and fried then dipped in syrup. So good.
Imagine if Plato and Socrates had a podcast, here’s Mythical Kitchen
A corndog is clearly a savory twinkie
'What do you do at home when we can't see eye to eye'
Ummm... historically.. side with Josh. So it might not be the question you want to be asking.
Wow the empanada meaning bread blew my mind as a Latina lol, I never thought of it that way. Empanizado means breaded like Pollo empanizado is fried chicken cutlet broo why did it take me 26 years to realize that.
I was confused by encebollado in Ecuador because I thought it would be stuffed onions.
@@petertaylor4980 😂😂
Ok but what if a corn dog is a fritter?
Corn dogs are so good, especially if you make your own. also you have to dip them! at least mustard but honey mustard is good too
In our Food Tree of Life I would like to broach the idea of Convergent Evolution - Some things from different families can evolve the same traits based on similar environmental pressures
Awesome job
Ever have a breakfast corn dog? Sausage wrapped in a pancake? Loved them when I was a kid hah.
if josh ever decides to take his scrabble skills to the public, put me down for first in line. he sold me on ‘qat,’ now i need to know what else he knows.
Saying “Tamall” is like saying “Latinx” 😂
Poptarts were originally designed as a dogtreat, right? So there'd be like meat paste inside?
I wouldn't presume to tell anyone how to live their lives, but folks should consider stuffing a hotdog bun with potato salad
When you're out of hotdogs at the bbq but have plenty of buns and side dishes 😅😅😂
Corndogs are hot dog fritters! It's fried batter with something in it. Not even close to a wrapped or stuffed dough
Frozen Taquitos are fire, come on Nicole.
I thought I didn't like corndogs until I tried the frozen mini corndogs. FAR superior to a regular corndog imo.
Nicole is absolutely delightful even though she stepped on Josh's Neil Peart story.
Are wellingtons ever served whole? Don't get just get a slice? How about it's similarities with meat pies? Meat usually minced instead of whole? I am confusion!
Ballpark corn dogs are elite.
You can’t really compare the two, but both cave very enjoyable at the right time and place. I don’t want corndogs for Thanksgiving, but I wouldn’t want beef Wellington at the fair.
A Pop tart is like a domesticated toaster streusel
Wellington is also a dumpling
i love corn dogs.
I love Josh and more often than not agree with him, but there’s no way in hell that a corn dog is a tamál
King Phillip came over from germany, swimming. Kingdom, phyllu, class, order, family, genus, species
If a corn dog is a wellington, then every battered and fried item in exsistence also is.
When I was a kid I always dipped my fries in mustard instead of ketchup.
What qualifies as a Wellington? Hard to say for sure, but I’d say it’s a general who won at Waterloo.
