      NightHawkInLight some advice for your welds, for thin metal like you showed here a mig welder would be better for those welds. Flux is ok but I recommend co2 and copper, you get no Slag or "scale". it looks like you tried to stick weld the plates together and your amperage was up too high or your arc was extremely long. hold the electrode about the same length away from the metal as the diameter of the solid metal core in the electrode itself

      would this work with coal or would it melt the iron pipe?

    • @she0051
      @she0051 8 років тому

      Cole Bouse coal would not burn as hot as it's not such a pure source of energy as it has lots of impurities that slow down it's combustion.... hope that helps :)

    • @XCerykX
      @XCerykX 8 років тому +1

      Ian Sheppard, that's not true. You don't actually use coal as fuel. When coal is burned, the impurities burn out quickly, creating Coke. Coke burns just as hot as charcoal.

    This design works great. I built it last Summer and mostly use it for quenching knives I make so far. I'm working on an anvil from a piece of rail and when it's complete I'll start forging blades instead of grinding them out. Thanks for providing a great design and description of the process to make this style of forge. It's remarkably cheap and functional.

  • @drason69

    A note about charcoal in the forge, and the dreaded fire flies. Start the fire with straight from the bag charcoal. Use a small bucket to put more charcoal in and cover with water. The damp/wet charcoal burns even more efficiently and the water helps reduce the flying cinders. I know full scale smiths that do this regularly. I use bituminous coal, yet still have it in water, to help reduce some of the gases that are emitted

      Good tip! In this case I intentionally poured some coal dust on because the sparks look good for the camera.

    I thought the ad at the end was nicely done, it was not intrusive. I watched the whole ad to support the channel, and I found I actually watched the ad. Voluntary commercials feel so much better than when they are forced, I also like it when the content creator narrates the ad, vs some canned ad I've seen a hundred times.

    I started off with something very similar. I took a cake pan and drilled about 8 x 1/4" holes in the bottom, kind of in the center of the pan in a rectangle measuring about 2" x 5". Then I dug a hole in the ground and placed a 3" piece of pvc at about a 45 degree angle going down to the bottom of the hole. Then I covered the bit of the pipe leading down into the hole, making sure not to cover the end, and placed the pan over top of the hole. I sealed it with some of the dirt I dug out of the hole and used a bathroom exhaust fan from Lowes for the blower. Worked for a pretty long time. allowed me to forge weld and everything.

    additionally, I would add the insulating mixture all the way up to the opening on the iron pipe, possibly wedging a paint stirrer as well. That way you can be assured that you won't damage the pipe even at white hot temps.

    I might recommend making a hood over the fire pot for capturing the sparks and fumes. I noticed a lot of ash and sparks falling on your hands and I know much those sting. Maybe a steel pail with a 3-inch pipe out the top? Would also recommend a spark arrester.

    In welding class we were instructed to NEVER weld teflon coated pans! Although super safe at normal cooking temperatures, and even a little beyond, we were told that welding temperatures turned teflon into EXTREMELY toxic fumes. Maybe your insulating layer is enough to keep it below that temperature, but better to use uncoated steel or stainless steel instead.
