From PIXELS to PRINT: Creating a Zine from my Art

- In this video I make an 8 page zine using one sheet of paper-A ZINE full of silly Spongebob puns, like SpongeRob Zombie, Sponge Corn-on-the-Bob, GrungeBob... and lots more.
I experiment with non traditional ways to use my studio printer to create a unique look. Stay tuned for the second half where I finish the zine off with some Gocco (screen) printed linework on the cover.

12:10 you can draw a rectangle to fit your artboard, then go to Object > Path > Split into Grid & bingo, banco bongo you have perfect shapes for your zines!
Doing it this way is nice too because you add gutters to each that’ll be equal as well. Cuts out all the guesswork.
Thanks for the tips!
As an offset-printer I really love the approach of separating digital artwork and print it color by color. It adds to make the printing process more comprehensible. Also using the Riso-brushes feels like drawing a print with all of the Halftones.
Thanks! It was fun and a cool experiment even if the final result isn’t dramatically different
I taught middle school reading/writing, and did this folding zine with my kids. They were so impressed at how theirs came together. I think I still even have a few of them.
Oh that’s fun!
@@rhondamoore9842 same! I teach zines and comics on the regular.
This video came at the perfect time! i just read a book that mentioned zines and now I want to do one for my dad's upcoming 70th bday 😬
Oh fun!
I love the entire philosophy of making zines and I want to start making zines! I think you forgot to factor in the margins of the entire page.
Zines are the best! I actually just needed to change my printer margins to borderless and it worked great.
Ok, this is one of my all time favorite videos.
Oh thanks so much!
Love this...am so gonna go make a zine for my son. Inspired!
Cool! Have fun!
These are so great! SpongeRob Halford and Grungebob are my favourites
Thanks!
Bikini Bottom Kill is amazing, I love that
also both Sponge Robs, great references
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing this. I have my students make zines about things they are experts in or things they would like to teach the person who is reading it. They do think its wild to make them out of a single sheet of paper.
Oh that sounds like a fun project!
Really like the creativity on this! Great idea.
Thanks so much!
Gocco printing, the Russian roulette of indy printing lol
Lolol
@@CelineRobichaud1986 yeah but you gotta take risks sometimes too😉
Aw man! Very cool. I never knew I wanted to make a zine until now
It’s so much fun!
Make sure to “boop” when you fold it. That’s super important!
Lol
really love your videos !!! super helpful and your just awesome!!
Thank you so much!
@@chris-piascik will be waiting for another video !!
This looks amazing. I have made many zines and there is always a little border that I trim before folding. Even if I print borderless. But every printer is different.
Thanks! When I chose borderless it fixed the problem for me.
I'm going to have to join your paid stuff this week too for more lessons.
Thank you!
Need to double the inner borders to match the outside (or inversely, half the outer borders). Although I'm sure you figured it out already. Not a SpongeBob fan myself, but I can sure appreciate your puns and artwork! :)
Thanks, I just forgot to check the borderless box.
I am guessing that the printer had some type of border settings. I would check there.
Yeah, I turned on borderless and it worked perfectly.
Very cool ! Nice job ! What is the advantage of printing the colors separately ?
Thanks! I did it to actually add a bit of imperfection, some shifted alignments, etc to give it a more hand made touch and make them a bit more original.
If you want to duplicate a path and reduce or expand it by a specific amount you can go:
Object>path>offset path
Edit: I just realised I wasn’t subscribed. So sorry, I’ve fixed this terrible oversight now 😊
Thanks for the tip!
Was borderless selected?
Also, this kind of stuff is super cool. These kind of projects A++
That was the issue!
Inkjet printers always add the extra margin. Maybe if you print with bleed??? Not sure. Just guessing.
Yeah! I figured it out. I ended up printing with “borderless”
sponge bill.😂😂😂
sponge job.
sponge bob the builder.
sponge B.O.B.

sponge prob(ability)! HAHA!
*i could go on forever* !😂😂
lolol
When you said each image had its own color layers and you imported them into the print file, how did you do that? Did you export PS color channels? Or did you color the images using the multi-layer coloring you once covered a while back?
I used the same riso coloring process I’ve done in other videos. These aren’t actual color channels. The only thing I used Photoshop for was to quickly organize my pages into the template and then print.
The template is just a digital file right? It’s trying to charge me shipping?
Oh weird! I’ll try to fix that asap!
Should be fixed! I forgot to uncheck the “physical product” box
I have a question bro. I made like 90 traits in Adobe fresco with vector art but when I made the traits transparent and published and uploaded with Google drive then sent them once they were uploaded the quality loomed blurred how can I fox that so they're HD. I also start using Adobe fresco because you but really need advice on this because I have something due soon.
Well if you are exporting them as pngs or something they will no longer be vector. Unfortunately Fresco doesn’t currently have the option to export directly as an SVG. To get vector art out of Fresco you need to either open it in illustrator from fresco and export from there. Or export as a pdf.
@@chris-piascik can you export as a png from illustrator? Thanks for the info also. These are being put on a generator that a dev made where people can make their own pfp and choose hot to design their characters for free. I made shoes, shirts, pants, eyes, and mouths, so just trying to keep that quality because someone else made another character in raster and that quality looked better then in the vector lol but the pieces have to be transparent. I'm using iPad 12.9 pro as well. I'll try sending to illustrator though and sending it from there.
You can export a png from illustrator, but it’s still not going to be vector because PNGs are raster based (pixel).
@@chris-piascik oh that sucks lol I hope there's a way to keep that quality or I'll have to convert everything to pixle like you said.
✌👀

Yooo if you need a riso print provider, Melon Press here in St. Louis is awesome. I met them at a local market and all their riso prints were gorgeous. melonpressstl on Instagram! Tell them The Good Chad sent you. 😉
