Madonna's compositions never lacks of beautiful melodies, that's why, in my opinion, she became in successful artist. Her ability to write catchy songs is mesmerizing, the hook, the chorus are infectious.
I find the song quite soothing and enjoyable. It would have been great if it had been featured as a B-side on one of the 'Like a Prayer' singles, akin to "Supernatural."
Lyrically this seemed to evolve into Pray for Spanish Eyes. Pretty sure she's referring to her close friends and generally those who became ill during the AIDS crisis.
I hadn't thought of that, but it's a possibility. Given the "Angels" theme, it's plausible that the song could be about departed friends. Maybe she had both this track and "Spanish Eyes" ready and felt they were too alike, opting for the latter.
I adore this song, and it's frustrating that it was omitted from the album. The chorus is impeccable. Had it been released as a single, it might have become another major hit for her. Sadly, Madonna is an artist who sometimes struggles to distinguish her outstanding work from the less remarkable, and often wants to get behind the lesser option. This tendency became more apparent as the 1990s progressed.

This reminds me of something that could have come from Who’s That Girl era. Maybe a transition between the two projects.
