Not the quality of Rome, I understand many structures were poorly built, however even taking into account that the last 2/3 centuries before its fall to the Turks had seen the city become only a shadow of its former self, Constantinople lasted as a great Roman Capital far longer than Rome managed. Fascinating it certainly is and disgracefully ignored by so many European historians.
Shame that the palace is totally lost now. I tried to look for it on google maps after hearing it was connected to the Hippodrome and was puzzled when I couldn't see it.
So is most of the hippodrome, I was just in Istanbul and it felt like I was walking above ancient buried cities. You can still see some of the remains but most of it has all been built over.
The palace was for the roman emperors, who had the city as capital until 1453. The term “byzantine” was invented in 17th century. Not a true term, for the people who lived there. They were always referring to themselves as: romans. Until the end.
Very good. This has everything I was curious about. Thanks!
Where we can found datails reconstruction of Great Palace in Constatinopole?
A brilliant presemtation
More than the city of Rome, Constantinople is the most fascinating and magnificent capital of antiquity.
