Istanbul, once known as Byzantium, and later as Constantinople, is a city of such diverse culture and history. It was the capital of three great empires - Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. Both ancient and modern art blends elements from Europe, Asia and the Middle East, reflecting its geographical and historical positioning as a bridge between the East and the West. It is the only city in the world that straddles two continents, Europe and Asia. Constantinople became Istanbul in 1930, following Turkey becoming a republic.
The city’s art is a visual embodiment of its complex history.

May I suggest new york as an art city or do one on the art museum in new York (abbreviated moma)
We have already covered New York - check it out on my video list! Thanks 🙏
We’ve already done New York with a focus on abstract expressionism. But agree there’s scope for another at some point. We choose lesser known art spaces so wouldn’t do MOMA though.

In 2013, I just got out of a 3-year relationship. I was broken hearted & burnt out from work. I went to Istanbul for a week, my first time outside of the US. I fell immediately head over heels with the city and its people. I got out of the tram and looked lost. Immediately, a shop owner helped me get to my hostel. My first morning, I went to the Archeaology Museum then to Topkapi Palace... The next day went to Hagia Sofia then to the Basilica Cistern. The art and people of this city healed a part of my soul I thought was broken forever.
Came back 3 years later to visit the friends I made who worked at the hostel I stayed at.
I cannot wait to be back. Istanbul is one of those cities that grabs a hold of your soul. I will never stop recommending for people to visit it.
Thanks for sharing your story 🙏
Love this story. How wonderful.
I know exactly what you mean. Istanbul is the only city other than Paris, Rome, and NYC that I love returning to over and over again.
Come to our English comedy open mic shows at Kadıköy as well. @tbenglishcomedy thay heals us too. And İstanbul does that, lift you up.
@@jlee4039 How would you rank them if you had to?
I like how the music is relevant and displays your elegant taste in every subject. No surprises.
Greetings from İzmir / Turkey.
Hope they'll do İzmir next!
Greetings from Izmir too =) I agree that the show is immaculately produced in every sense. A joy to watch.
As a Turk, this made me so happy.Thank you!!!
I'm so glad!
do you run a kebab shop in Berlin?😉
@@axelschmelzer8985 no :)
@@axelschmelzer8985 This is a channel for art, not casual racism
@@axelschmelzer8985 There are millions of kebab shops in Turkey already lol
I've been twice to this beautiful city and it's indeed a place we feel overwhelmed by the amount of history, beauty and art we are surrounded by! Thanks for another great video!
It really is!
Having been born and raised in Istanbul, I honestly wasn’t even aware of some of things explained in the video. Thoroughly informative and entertaining video. Thanks!
that's high praise indeed! Thanks from Joanne, James' collaborator on the great art city videos.
I loved the Refik Anadol shout out. Truly one of the most fascinating artists working today
Loved that you chose the Basilica Cistern over Hagia Sophia and Zeyrek Hammam over The Blue Mosque.
thanks from Jo, James' collaborator on the city videos. We try to choose lesser-known art places in each city.
turkey is on my bucket list of places to visit and seeing the Hagia Sophia will be life changing for me
You will never regret it. Also the most helpful people. Just wonderful people.
I had the greatest suprise about the music and topics you selected. This is the first video which has no orientalist thema with mosques and music. I´m deeply impressed how you blended the divers cultures of Istanbul in your video. Just great
This comes just in time for my upcoming visit to Istanbul! Thank you, James! You present this in such a beautiful manner! What an amazing city and with so much rich history, culture and art, I'd say a second video might -eventually- be in place. ❤
There are a ridiculous amount of places to visit in Istanbul - have fun 🙏
Thank you for the great details in your work. You made us proud of our history, really. As a Turkish man (44 yo), born in Istanbul/Florya, the greatest of all is Basilica Cistern by far. You may experience similar feelings in some other parts of the world for all other spots in Istanbul but you will never find a (man-made) structure like Basilica Cistern in any other place. You can only understand what I mean, when you go down there. Even in a bright summer day at noon, as soon as you enter to staircase, its dark and quite atmosphere, cool and humid air, wet walls, high ceiling, gigantic endless columns gives you chills. For me it is a true time machine that you truly find yourself in 1000 years back in all aspects. When you come out, you just turn back the civilization of our time from the time travel. And I guarantee you will not be the same person. Of course, this happens when you visit in low season, when very few people around so you really feel and enjoy the space, away from a crowd. I recommend everyone who reads this message untill here, to put it on his bucket list. You will not regret. All the bests.🌷
Thanks for the tip. It sure looks amazing, but also as something that you can only experience in real life. Damn, it puts Tolkien's Moria to shame ❤❤
As a Turkish art-history nerd and a huge fan of your channel this made my day!
Thank you for this homage to Istanbul, a city that has blown my mind with its beautiful and vibrant culture. Architecture, people, food, just amazing. Sailing the Bosphorus by the sunset was an experience I’ll never forget, ever. ❤
As a Turkish resident of Istanbul, it brought a smile to my face seeing such a splendid video of my city on this channel, which I follow with great interest. Despite the political issues and the recent immigrant influx, I can confidently say that Istanbul holds a magnificent art treasure waiting to be discovered by those who are unfamiliar with the city."
My travel bucket list grows bigger and bigger every time you post your Great Art Cities series! 😆
That's great to hear!
As a fan and promoter of your works here in UA-cam, I felt very surprised and happy to see my home city. Istanbul can be told in many aspects, but you curated your story of Istanbul very well, harmonized with art work. Thank you very much.
Hi from James' collaborator on the Great Art Cities series. We're so pleased that Istanbul locals are enjoying this video. Please share! Thanks!
Thank you. The Alexander sarcophagus is quite impressive.
Amazing Mr Payne. I remember being taught of the Ottomans back in middle school, I if not for your video, I would have just forgotten all about it as some just another tribe of the past. But my lord what amazing works they have left behind for us to admire. I would love for you to make a longer version, even if it is patreon exclusive. Pls
Superb video and explanation once again. I almost purchased a plane ticket to go to Istanbul. Love the Turkish history and architecture. Thanks again.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks 🙏
This was not only beautiful but fascinating. The Medusa heads were 1500 year old upcycling! It gave me so much to look forward to when I visit Istanbul again
One of the great cities I'd like to visit.
You should!
The city is also responsible for the song that is undoubtedly playing in everybody's head right now.
Damn - me too now!
yes indeed!
What song?
@@aa-xy4hg Istanbul (not Constantinople)
I love that you also talk about non-Eurocentric art
Thank you Dear James! As I said in my comment on the notification of this video, I treat myself to a glass of good wine for a perfect friday evening with a video of yours. Let's have many more! Cheers from Canada
Wonderful! My co-writer on the city videos is Canadian - More to come 🇨🇦
Another dream city to visit after watching this excellent video. Thank you!
4 minutes in and Istanbul has already risen to the top three cities on my bucket list ❤
Thank you James and Joanne for this amazing film. I wasn't aware of the incredible art history and the contemporary art of this beautiful city. A must visit city.
Our pleasure!
My beautiful city,it's a blessing to "live İstanbul"💜💜
It’s a fantastic city
HILARIOUS! i had just recommended your channel to two different self-diclared art history buffs, that i'd met randomly in 'life' yesterday 😆
thx muchy for another upload
🇨🇦 😁
Wow, thank you! 🙏
That wasn't enough for me! I need 30-45 minutes version! I've been to Istanbul and my mother currently lives there, but I can't truly appreciate art without understanding the history behind it. Your videos help me understand it so much easier and your way of preaching about art history is so engaging, please do more!
Excellent presentation! Crisp and clear, with fascinating information. And we love that triptych!!
I absolutely love these videos. They’re the perfect length, jam packed with knowledge and don’t remind me of the borning school documentaries that would put me to sleep. These keep me enthralled from the first second to last!
I grew up there and had to leave at 21. I miss there to much, if you have a chance to visit please take it, you wont regret it.
Fascinating stuff. Very good content as always.
Thanks 🙏
05:37 "Nudity in Ancient Art was used as a deliberate way to imply heroism or even Divinity." Bookmarked.
You just scratched the surface of the art in Istanbul. Although my picks would mostly be different, I still liked the video. Thank you.
Re watching this now! It's very inspiring and it's made me start to plan a trip there. Your efforts with great production values, research and writing are much appreciated
Please never stop! Great Cities Explained, Great Books Explained and Great Art Explained are the best. Watched every single video!
My initial reaction was "ugh, that looks boring". Then I watched it and now planning a city break ! Amazing.
I was in Istanbul for the first time last november. It was a blast. I highly recommend the antiquity museum, they had beatiful pieces. While I think modern Turkey can open up a little bit more to their Byzantine (Greek..) past, in general they have a very strong culture of history and a sense of duty to show it. It was beautiful! Loved every minute of it.
It’s a great city!
I'm a İstanbulite, love this episode.
Every upload is a blessing, thank you
Glad you enjoy it!
Thank you, James and Joanne!
Thanks for shouting out your book channel, it sounds right up my alley but I had no idea about it!
The book channel is fabulous.
I just watched James Payne and Joanne Shurvell's collaboration - an easy to digest, well researched and beautifully made video bringing together key moments and historical facts that make Istanbul a great city to see art.
thank you! It was one of the most challenging but exciting videos to make.
I love your work. Istanbul has always been on my list, but this piece has solidified it. Thx!
Gosh, thank you for this.
I hope I can visit someday.
You should!
Beautiful video, as always! What an intriguing subject, as well, as I always wanted to live in Turkey. Thanks a lot, James.
Fantastic video, there's just so much beauty and history that I'd miss out on if you wouldn't showcase it. Guess I'll have to visit Istanbul one day.
As a Turk, I want to thank you for doing this good of a job.
Extremely interesting and for me a discovery of a specific form of beauty I had not seen before: the painted ancient sculptures and reliefs! Thank you.
This is a wonderful, informative and entertaining video. Thank you for all the hard work that went into it. I particularly loved that you showcased the modern artists. I was completely unaware that there was a such a movement. Wonderful to see artists pushing back against authoritarianism.
Amazing work as always!
Thank you for this fascinating and well-explained video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video has always. I had never heard about the Alexander sarcophagus, the amount of detail is truly astonishing
Absolutely fascinating.
Thank you for teaching me about the art in this beautiful city
Didn't expect this. Amazing.
Great one! looking forward to Cairo episode
Perfect video. Immediately subscribed to your channel. You can make part 2 and 3.
Ah, my beautiful country... It's something else to see a city from your own country in one of your videos :) Thank you very much!
İstanbul still lives as a Dukedom having its own rules and culture . Thanks for this wonderful ode to her unique beauty.
Fascinating and well made
This was really fascinating!
We cycled from London to Istanbul and spent three weeks there. I love it so much.
that's very impressive!
Great video. Thanks

Great city, one of my favourites in Europe. I wouldn’t mind living there again.
Couldn't agree more!
A brilliant video essay, thank you.
Excellent work depicting a really old, vibrant and always dynamic city!!
Thank you very much!
This is cool. I'd like to encourage you to continue with the Art Cities series.
Not just that an architecture is an art as well, but this also inspires into visiting the city.
I'd vote for even more info about the places, architecture, suburbs or subcultures as a context to the art itself.
Thank you.
Excellent video!
Yay a new art city video!
What a fantastic journey through time and space and cultures in just 15 minutes! I really appreciate you cover both classic and modern art, and especially how the former have influenced the latter. I must make sure to visit the museum of modern art when I'm next in Istanbul. And the tile museum especially!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fascinating

Istanbul has so many layers, both historical and cultural, and it is a great responsibility for us to claim and carry on this heritage. 🇹🇷
Soooo interesting. That will add up some new POI to my Instanbul list :)
Great video, as always
I appreciate that
13:26 all the contemporary artists in this section are breathtaking but I want to be completely enveloped in Zeid's painting
