I am a logger in Northern Michigan,
I do selective cutting and I pay percentage.
All the veneer logs I get 30% percent and all the saw log I get 50% and then all firewood would be mine. I take all brush and tops and make bedding areas and home for smaller wildlife

Very informative video. Thank you. I recently purchased some family property (over 110 acres) that is wild and completely covered with good timber that hasn't ever been timbered (at least not in my lifetime and I am 53). A guy stopped by last year and dropped his card that said "logger, buyer of standing timber". I ended up requesting an estimate to do a selective cutting of the entire property (all trees over 19" dia.), he and his assistant looked over the timber and property. They said that the timber was the nicest they had seen in a very long time and most of it was relatively easy to access. We talked for a while and he said he would run the numbers and get back to me in a few days. When he was leaving, I told him that I appreciate his time and look forward to hearing back. I also mentioned that I had previously placed a call to a timber consultant and was waiting for a call back. The look on this logger/ buyer's face totally changed. Needless to say the logger/ buyer never called me back (I never got a call back from the consultant either). I truly believe that I dogged a bullet by the logger/ buyer not calling me back. I speculate that he probably goes around trying to take advantage of peoples lack of knowledge of this industry. Since then I purchased a Biltmore stick and read up on cruising. Thank you so much for your videos. You seem like you have a fair company. If you would be interested in giving an estimate (Northern central WV- Calhoun County) please reply and we'll set see if we can set up an appointment sometime.

Just trying to make sure I understand what you are saying . Sake of discussion say you have a tree that’s 18” at base they are charging based on that and not taking into count that the rest of tree is no bigger then 14” wide ? Another question is it better and healthier for the tree to cut at waist high instead of cutting directly at base?

Good questions. No, trees should almost always be cut as low as possible. what I am referring to is that some buyers are unwilling to mark each tree that they plan to cut, so instead they will do what’s called a diameter cut instead. This is simply an estimate of how much board feet of timber they think is there and is rarely an accurate amount due to not actually measuring the trees. There are two types of diameter cuts. Ones that say we will take all trees that measure 18” at the very bottom (point of cut) and ones that say we will do all trees that measure 18” at chest high. While neither is ideal, the ones that are measured at the bottom are much worse as a land owner will perceive 18 inches as being pretty big, but when measured at the bottom, that includes almost all trees. A diameter cut done at chest high is a much more accurate. Hope that makes sense.

Just found your you tube! I'm looking for open land with 20 per cent in trees at least. My goal is to manage the woods to help the grand kids in 10 and 20 years (probably after I'm gone) so they can get income from it. What would you recommend videos/book/etc I read? I had hoped to add trees but select ones to hopefully add value, like black walnut, and others; but also add a few just for wildlife like crabapple or others. Thank you for your videos and will start watching the other ones you've done.

      Glad you found us!
You’ll definitely want something with mature trees to start, it takes many many years to grow mature timber from scratch and you will greatly benefit from finding land with good timber already on it. Hope you find what your looking for!

Can I ask what area you work in, because I can see that as I buy a property I'd like someone like you, if you aren't in TN, that can assess what I have and help with information. Again thanks

how do you get up and down those slopes with machinery? just use a winch to pull the logs?

Roads are built using the dozer to get around, but yes cables are used to winch logs up.

I have small woods (14+/- acres) geared toward deer habitat. I need to take canopy out. There are not a ton of large value trees, but some. I consulted a forester a few years ago who advised me that I could do a select cut but thought I'd be better off waiting about ten years. He was seemingly not understanding my habitat goals and instead kept circling back to timber value. I am 55 years old now, so I don't think I want to wait to make a move. What approach would you advise me to take with a potential logger? Thanks.

My place got logged before I bought it. They destroyed as many tree as they took so my woods/tress are worthless. Would never have a logger on my place again unless it was clear cut. They also don't plant the skidder trails. Sorry I'll just tress as I need them for firewood. No respect for raping the place and leaving a mess

Unfortunately this is why the industry gets a bad name, there are simply some people that don’t care and do not respect the land, thankfully there are also good companies that treat the property like their own.

It can be tough to do, the best is word of mouth from a friend but the next best option is to get several companies to bid on your trees. You’ll be looking for someone that takes the time to actually explain what’s going on and is open and transparent.
