I think it's like the black album in that sense. A lot of hardcore fans of the earlier stuff didn't like the black album but it's grown on many of them over time. This feels similar in that sense but instead of this album being a new sound it's more like a marriage of all their sounds from over the years
I really wasn't sure about Inamorata first listen but bro it grew instantly on the next couple listens. It's got so much soul and emotion especially from James. Hope you can grow to appreciate it a bit more! Overall, i loved this album haha
I’m pretty sure that Room of Mirrors section where you said “we need more of THIS kirk”… was actually James. James’ solo work has been more consistently melodic than Kirk’s since Death Magnetic (look up the James version of Suicide and Redemption and compare the full solo to the one that was put on the album). Also, the more you listen to Inamorata, the more songs you’ll start to notice being referenced. I hear little crumbs of Outlaw Torn, My Friend of Misery, Orion, Bleeding Me… and the verse riff is “Are You Gonna Go My Way” by Lenny Kravitz.
from what i hear on this album it has sooo much life it it it doesn't matter what you start with and that fact that these guys are pushing 60 and still have in them to push the limits and or make new ones i will definately be considering buying this album when i can and highly recommend the listening to this

This album would be a 10/10 if someone pushed Kirk a little bit more, like Bob Rock did back in the days of the Black Album. Black Album, Load and Reload have some memorable melodic solos, and I wish 72 seasons was like that too. Unfortunately Kirk just became lazy. As a musician I can tell James and Lars were not delivering their best, like, 15 years ago, but they are definetly taking music seriously, and both of them have improved significantly over the past decade. Rob has always been consistent. But Kirk.... oh man... it hurts me to say, because he was the guy who inspired me to play, but Kirk is a retired musician in activity. He dragged this album down.
Hetfield is absolutely no doubt the MVP on this album, arguably moreso than any other Metallica album. His vocals are just on another level, but even more importantly are the riffs he pumps out which are ridiculously strong here. Kirk of course has his moments in the harmony sections sprinkled throughout the album, but it's hard not to also think he may be the weakest member currently after you hear the 10th pentatonic shreddy solo unnecessarily drenched in wah. Lars is super tight here and while the production on the drums makes the hi-hats louder than I think was needed, I still think his performance is pretty good, and Rob does some great work too. After letting this entire album sit with me over the last few days I genuinely don't think there's a single bad track on this thing. Maybe a couple 'meh' ones (Chasing Light + If Darkness...), but it's consistently strong IMO. Solid 8/10 album for me.
I love this album. Sure the solos aren't the best but for Kirk now days it decent. You Must Burn is my favorite song on the record. Loved the reaction man keep it up
Nice reaction man. Some of these tracks stay on the Metallica playlist for me (especially the last three), a very solid outing. Long live Metallica! :)
There is so much throwback to their old stuff hidden throughout this album. Hell, I think there's even St Anger style riffs just tuned to standard throughout as well
Fully agreed. I’ve been very adamant that if they redid st anger, did a “cleaner” version with their modern set up it could be pretty sweet. Hell they sound pretty great when they do them live now
Probably on purpose reflecting on the past stuff(Broken Beat and Scared, My Friend Of Misery... Old riffs tweaked) and their influental bands, because the album itself is centered around reflecting on the past and chasing that light in the future...
I really like this album, and all my favourites are in the second half. Chasing Light, Too Far Gone?, Room of Mirrors and Inamorata. Harmonies and vocals are god-tier on this record. I do wonder what your opinion is on The Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, and Fixxxer, since Inamorata is like a sibling to those songs. I do love riffs, but I do love vocals as well, and vocal dominated songs are a personal favourite of mine. Which I do believe Inamorata is
This album tops Hardwired and Death Magnetic… it’s incredible!! Give it about two or three listens and it will become top to bottom playlist… ENJOY 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻
Hardwired had bangers and great stuff, but also had lows and that boring 2nd disc where Spit Out The Bone stands out so hard... On 72S, there are no big thrashy bangers but album feels more in flow and consistent... I think Sleepwalk my life away might be the worst song, at least for me...
yup same here. i think Too Far Gone, Chasing Light and Room of Mirrors are right there with Spit, Halo, and Moth. HW was very top heavy where as 72 Seasons is just sturdy from top to bottom. only songs that feel like skips to me are Burn! and Sleepwalk. the rest pops very nicely. i wish Lux was the opener though.
Broken beat and Scared, Misery..., familiar riffs and melodies from back in the day, sounding like their influences(Sabbath, Misfits, Merciful fate, Motorhead....) It's like they did these parts on purpose to have a throwback at their earlier work and their influences, as what influenced this album.... The same as the theme of the album how your early childhood afects your life ahead of you... I get that impression of intention on the album...
This album kicks fucking ass! Best album consistently since The Black Album, and I like this one more. Not to say there aren't great songs on Death Magnetic and Hardwired... but on both those albums there were some duds. This album is just great through and through except maybe Sleepwalk My Life Away.
Pretty wild contrast with Hardwired. Hardwired had a lot more variety, came off as more "fun", and had more low points but also more memorable tracks. 72 Seasons is more serious and brooding throughout, and also more monotone. It's more consistently good, but perhaps less memorable. That said, Inamorata is a career top 10 track. Accomplishes what they wanted to in Load/Reload and finally realizes the potential of the sound they developed on those albums.
The hihat sticks out because there’s nothing of substance happening in that section. Find the version on youtube where someone overlayed the “My Friend In Misery” bass melody on top of that section. Makes the whole section/song better.
Inamorata is the second best song in the album after Room of Mirrors. You were just talking so much over it that you missed the magic. I bet it will grow on you
Great review and reaction! My personal opinion is that its a very mature album with deep messages from someone who has been there. I also think they could have gone and made another double album, it doesnt feel "finished" and could use another two songs or so. Lastly, I am not too fond of the sound production, while many have praised it I find the bell-sound from the highhat to be too noticeable in most songs and it rings too much.
