Happy new year! I'd love to see a "Developing a Yew bonsai | Third year" video. I hope you and the tree are doing well. Currently i have a yew (i luckily got from my sister's garden) sitting in a large plastic container in a raised growing bed. She had to get rid of it pretty instantly. Can't wait to pot it up after the winter and thin it out a little (eliminate 3-way-splits) but i guess it would be the best to not touch it again in 2025 after that initial operation.
absolutely. Allow it to settle. And yes, nr three is in the making! This spring I think it will come out. And after that, I am probably moving the plant on!
With your skills, even 10€ would be enough creating a bonsai. It’s always interesting to see your process and the progresses of the trees! Cheers from Finland
You should see it now. It is ain a proper bonsai pot and I am pushing the backbudding to develop filled pads. It actually starts to look like something!
I'd love to see more videos about this particular tree. I was in local garden centers yesterday, looking for yew. They had lots of Taxus baccata and T. b. media 'Hillii', only some very young Taxus cuspidata 'Lescow'. I was hoping to maaybe find 'regular' Taxus cuspidata or T. c. 'Nana', but it seem the garden centers share the same supplier. May i ask which yew is most promising for Bonsai use? I was looking for small leaves.
@@Chau574 I am not sure there is a lot of difference. I would avoind the more columnar types. T. cuspidata is really nice as the needles prefer to grow in rosettes. But baccata will over time do this too. Needles reduce A LOT under bonsai care, so not per se a real issue. (But smaller is naturally better). ENd of the growing season will have a follow-up of this tree.
The second year styling certainly made the tree pop! I hadn't thought about sawing the juntion of the branch like that - doing my yews over the next weeks so will keep that tactic in my kitbag. thanks jelle :)
Nice styling choices - you were really able to compact the tree considerably. Reduced deadwood looks great too. In case you would like fruit, you will need a male plant in the vicinity. Lovely tree either way!!
Bought a yew last year from the sale section for @ €6. Very pot bound and very small bush like. Managed to wire the branches out and repotted. Now looks more like a tree but has so many branches I'm not sure what to do with it next. But your video has given me better idea of how to proceed. Thanks 👍
Just found your channel and loving it so far. Watched pt 1 and pt 2 of challenge video and very curious about the pelling back of back and peeling the branch. Is that strictly for asthetics? Whats the end goal of the peeled bark branch? Thanks for the content and jeep up the good work 👍
Branches the size you removed will root as cuttings if you just stick them in substrate. May take 2 seasons, though. Tried it once just to see if it would work ...
I have a hugeeeee yew yamadori and wondered if i could get some horticultural feedback from you jelle? Can i send you a pic or a video? Great video as always❤!
@@GrowingBonsai ua-cam.com/video/rH4TuTQ_sl8/v-deo.htmlsi=LeiO1rUe4lDx6WC9 just uploaded this short, somehow the quality of video is really bad for the first few hours then it gets better, i pruned back the top shoots even more after digging it out and the tree recovered very well, should i prune back even more to get more backbudding next year? There is also another video on my channel where you can see the tree a bit better!
Sorry, just saw this in the spam section of youtube. I have marked the video and will take a look at it, and see whether I can manage a discussion video for you in a few weeks, if that is OK.
@GrowingBonsai absolutely no worries! In the meantime the yew had crazy bud back, I'm not sure if I shall leave it in the pot until spring 2025, or to already repot and work on it on spring 2024, will be a decent bonsai in the future🤩🙏🏼💚
I.m glad you posted a video on yew. I have the same problem as I bought one from a nursery earlier this year and wired it out in April. Just last week I removed the wire as it was already biting into the wood in just 4 months. Crazy isn't it? They do grow pretty fast. Looking forward to another update on this.
It is already one year, amazing how time goes by... I like the look of this tree so far 👍
Time, it does fly!

That is so kind of you!
I just bought 30 bare root yews a little younger than yours. Collecting today!
This vid has been some great morning inspiration 👍
Coool! Forest?
@ singles to begin with then I may pick out few to put together. I managed to pick the ones with the lovely roots.
I like where this is going.

Very cool! Deadwood looks good. I might get a Yew one day. I have so much now. I will soon be known as the Tree Hoarder...
Yeah, you think you have more than me? ;). tree-redeemer I have been called
Nice job.Yew is a great tree to work with

Thanks 👍 Now it is time for backbudding and next year the tree should get fuller

I love the progress of the tree! ❤
It is going places indeed!
Interesting job on this tree. Thanks !
Thank you too!
Me encanta la evolución en la formación de este árbol.
Gracias Avila!
Shocked. Just heard about Tony. Loved his videos. Depest sympathy to his wife and family 😎☹️☹️Dennis
indeed
Nice tree it looks like one you might see on a mountain or cliff edge growing out of a crack hanging on
The only way you could make it look more wild is if you let a goat chew on it
will do a third styling and show it next spring. After that it will move on. Maybe for a 75k sub give away!
@@GrowingBonsai I look forward to seeing that 👍

Lots of male plants around :)

Thank you! Cheers!
Très intéressant, merci pour la vidéo!

Hey, will you be doing an update on the Spruce also?
In spring, perhaps!
Love what you did to that little yew!! Did you ever pass your master test??
Not yet! A few more weeks

Welcome aboard! The part without bark is a branch I wanted gone, but wounds close slowly so I left a bit standing there as deadwood.

Yup. buuut.. I do not *really* need any more trees :)

Hi. Just bought a Yew tree from a nursery. How can I distinguish the 2 year old needles from 1 year old ?
Thanks
normally the branches and needles grown in one seasons have little marks where they started to push.
Very nice tree l have one similar in style bur it's a juniper
Very cool!

Yeah, wiring young branches is the best approach in my view.
