Fred Armisen is a legitimate drummer, he played in a really awesome punk-hardcore band named Trenchmouth as well as The Blue Man Group in the 90's. It's awesome to see him combine his musical and comedic talents in such a way. I've known so many smug and pretentious drummers like Armisen's character in this video, he nailed it spot-on.
I seen the full video several times and me and the entire drum department at Manny's in NYC would be in tears watching this we were laughing so hard, classic video! Fred actually came in and gave a video to the store but I wasn't there. The sheet music that comes with the video is just as hillarious!
An absolute inspiration! You have a real talent for taking extremely complicated multi metric polyrhythms and explaining them in a way a small child could understand. I would love to see what you could do on a bigger kit!
He was a legend, I remember meeting him when he played with Frank Zappa, they used to call him "Biggie bing bang" for his trademark throne sound. Such an untimely death at 82 running with the bulls in Spain. That was unexpected
Now I am inspired for greatness! I never had the right Polynesian Mo-town James Brown flam rest feel. I'm experimenting with the inverted roll on each of my 17 bass drums.
Honestly this bit should be in a museum. The amount of meta humor is as polyrhythmic and complex as the beats he emulates. Genius is often very subtle.
My friend had this at Manny’s in New York and man every time he’d put it on we would be in tears! The entire video is hysterical and the drum charts as well lol!
The best part is the sheer number of people who aren't quite sure if this is parody or not having seen some of the weirder things that have come out of Hudson Music.
Seriously the funniest thing I've seen in ages! Actually looking for drumming things and found this gem. As funny as this is, he can obviously drum a bit
If you're a drummer, you will not have played anything right until you've watched this, and then promptly forgotten it, and then re-manifested it through a vision quest.
Huh, I never really broke down the Polynesian permutations like that. I see how easy it is and now I can't wait to try dominating at our band's next rehearsal.
2:40 I didn't realize that all of the twelve-year-olds banging away at the kits in Sam Ash were all really just playing tributes to Motown and Rick James. This is hilarious.
During the first minute I saw this I thought "wow, so now even I can make an instructional dvd, geez...", theeen I realized it's a joke, oh man, I'm laughing so hard now that I saw his other videos. This guy's a genius!
WOW ! I could REALLY use that inverted roll ! especially with my "Pop-Temple-Church of the River" Pan,Pot and Mug ensemble............can't wait to try it out
@NEXTLOVER Now that's funny!!!! When I saw this video on my phone, I was like..wth? then I went to the computer and saw who it was and started dying laughing and watched it all again. Hilarious!
This CD changed my life. I now end all of my songs with a wash of cymbals, which is very much like 50's music.

Hahahahaha dude is a legend for this!
Hopefully you got these 17 toms. LOL
LMFAO 🤣 I DONT EVEN HAVE A DRUM SET LOL
😂😂😂Said oh so casually!
I can't stop laughing. That was good
The genius of Fred throughout his work is the character's unflinching earnestness. Gonna watch some Portlandia now.
An absolute inspiration! You have a real talent for taking extremely complicated multi metric polyrhythms and explaining them in a way a small child could understand.
I would love to see what you could do on a bigger kit!
A bigger kit?!?! 😂
Andrew Moore yeah, like a standard sized one. This is a beginner set of about 3/4 the normal size.
17 plus one toms. Plus 17 again.
He was a legend, I remember meeting him when he played with Frank Zappa, they used to call him "Biggie bing bang" for his trademark throne sound. Such an untimely death at 82 running with the bulls in Spain. That was unexpected
"hopefully you have these 17 toms".....lol that was a good one
You can really feel the funk there.
FLAAM rest. FLAAAM rest. FLAAM rest.
My favourite part is, and always will be:
"Flam rest... flam rest... flam rest..."
Now I am inspired for greatness! I never had the right Polynesian Mo-town James Brown flam rest feel. I'm experimenting with the inverted roll on each of my 17 bass drums.
My favorite part is where he ghost mutes a cymbal for no reason after his first flam.
is it me or does that look like Fred Armisen
Funny Shiat!!
Scott Rourk it IS Fred Armisen
Danny Walker thats actually an integral part of the flam-rest!
Danny Walker ...he hit it. 0:33 He is muting what he accidently hit.
Look what the cymbal is ha. Two crashes, one inverted an inch above.
Honestly this bit should be in a museum. The amount of meta humor is as polyrhythmic and complex as the beats he emulates. Genius is often very subtle.

this is the height of musical comedy
this is better than SHreds, or at least as good
The best part is the sheer number of people who aren't quite sure if this is parody or not having seen some of the weirder things that have come out of Hudson Music.
I feel like he didn't know he was going to say synchronology until the moment he said it.
This is a conglomeration of Mike Portnoy, Thomas Lang and JoJo Mayer's drum instructional videos.
Terry Bozzio
Marco Minneman
Also mainly Bozzio
What a specific comedy bit
Was Jens Hannemann Terry Bozzio's drum teacher~? I hear a lot his influence on Terry's drumming...
I fear that non-drummers think this is serious.
1:30 with the flam rest was PRICELESS, I laughed so hard!
This is probably the funniest vid i've seen in a long while, genius!
Hahahahaha!!! LOVE when he demonstrates the foot patterns, then mixed 'em together! Incredible! Thanks for posting!
I didn’t think I could feel stupider after learning something new, but there you are…
Huh, I never really broke down the Polynesian permutations like that.
I see how easy it is and now I can't wait to try dominating at our band's next rehearsal.
This is just one gem after another. So smart.
2:40 I didn't realize that all of the twelve-year-olds banging away at the kits in Sam Ash were all really just playing tributes to Motown and Rick James.
This is hilarious.
"It's a little bit of a groof more than it is a rock beat."
Rick James fills. Very natural
Great natural kind of a feel
He's wearing a Serenity t-shirt with the sleeves cut off, what an absolute alpha. Fred is such a legend
I was looking on UA-cam for tips for actual complicated drumming this is not what I expected to find at all but it was hilarious
During the first minute I saw this I thought "wow, so now even I can make an instructional dvd, geez...", theeen I realized it's a joke, oh man, I'm laughing so hard now that I saw his other videos. This guy's a genius!
We ALL know guys like this in the real world. Fred Nailed it!
I saw Jens Hennemann sitting in with Steely Dan in 83 at the Toledo Civic Centre. EPIC EPIC drum solo: 83 minutes of amazing Jens Hennemann technique!
Its a joke, guys. A nerdy drummers-only joke. Love.
Marco Minnemann should play to this
Marco Minnemann WISHES he could play like Jens Hannemann.
I've been working on my Flam Rest for three weeks now, just can't seem to get it right...
DAMN!
I've seen all I need to know to be a great drummer. Thanks Fred.
This made my otherwise crappy day brighten up substantially!
WOW ! I could REALLY use that inverted roll ! especially with my "Pop-Temple-Church of the River" Pan,Pot and Mug ensemble............can't wait to try it out
At first I thought, " Is this guy for real?" Then after watching more of his shenanigans, I found the video quite entertaining.
James Randall bro it's Fred Armisen...how do you not know who this is 😂
so good. haha, he is talented and also talented, and talented at being awkward and talented.
Let me get this straight...do I rest flam or flam rest?
You do a flam rest... flam rest... flam rest
both, but not in that order
I'm in tears. God Bless Dev.
I NEED MORE FLAM REST
Upload the tuning one too! Thats one of my favourites!
Hahah! Love it!
definitely has that rick james sound to it
Flam, rest.
Flam, rest.
Flam, rest.
Then mix it all together like so.
The insane foot pattern gets me every time lol
Finally a drummer who plays with a natural feel
This is the best thing I have ever seen in my life.
You, Sir, just made me fall off my desk in style.
Oh my god, this is probably the best stealth parody video on the internet.
@NEXTLOVER Now that's funny!!!! When I saw this video on my phone, I was like..wth? then I went to the computer and saw who it was and started dying laughing and watched it all again. Hilarious!
This is great. Rest. Love the pony tail. Rest
Let’s put it together.
This is great. Love the pony tail. Let’s put it together.
And you can really feel the funk there hahahaha genius :D
I love this guys shirt!
and you can really feel the funk there
Hopefully you have the seventeen toms
I just purchased Synchronology from itunes and its really good. Track 4 and 5 are superb.
You can really feel the fuck in there 🤣🤣🤣🤣 oh lord this gets me every time
A very natural kind of feel.
OMG! Now I can play the drums too! I can sound just like you. I had it in me all along.
I'm having problems with the Flam Rest part. Could you please demonstrate the sticking on that?
This is soo awesome! He's not half bad lol
Very niche comedy! Incredible!
"It's a little bit of a GROOFFF, more than it is a rock beat" XD
he was in a band in the 90's called trenchmouth, a chicago art punk band
this was hilarious! the "african" tom beat was actually kinda cool though lol
The Rick James fill joke is the best
Amazing kit!
Brilliant! The ironic part is his solo makes about as much sense as a Terry Bozzio solo! lol. Fred Arisen is a genius.
He's fantastic at paradiddle-awdle-oodles.
“A groofff..”
Man I wish I was that good sighhh
It’s a shame I didn’t realize what a genius Fred is until late into his tenure with SNL.
Fred is a comedic genius.
omG best drumm3r ever!!!11!!1!!!!!1one!!!1!
Is _Jens Hannemann_ a parody of Marco Minnemann's Drum Lessons?
Holy crap, EVERY new copy of the full 28 minute DVD+CD combo is going for $500+! I didn't realise it was so damn rare.
Fred is insane. How does he come up with those scenes. Absolutely hilarious!
Great spoof! Unfortunately there are millions of videos on UA-cam like this ( and they mean it)
COOL BAG of RHYTHM - RIGHT ON MY BROTHER - KEEP on SWINGING YOUR DRUMS 4 EVER and EVER -
Nice work Andy!!!!!!!!!!!Keep it up!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BG
Haha, too funny! We musicians sometimes take ourselves way too seriously. Not this time - lol!
What an amazing Groof!
"flam rest" is now my ringtone.
When wer're slow on the African beat.. we hit the biggest floor drum... when were "sped up" we skip it... hahahahaha..... love it!!
LOL. This totally makes me think of Terry Bozio's videos
The way he catches the Tom's like they're cybals hahaha

Great lesson, Jens!
