I hand sharpen mine in about 20 seconds on a bench grinder. That's it. A steady hand, a good eye, and skill. None of this other crap.

PLEASE, viewers of this video, DO NOT attempt this method. What a load of crap! This should be removed form youtube! This NOT the way to sharpen drill bit. This is the worst drill "sharpening" I've ever seen. There are so many things wrong in this video, including the DANGEROUS USE of cutting disks. The angles are wrong, at 8:27 you can see how bad the angles are!

Using the side of a cutting fiber disk as grinding? That's a Darwin award act.

You missed the relief angle, the secondary angle, the cutting face is a compound angle of two intersecting angles that is determined by the material being cut. There are reference charts available for that info. on line.

Crazy idea. Using the side of a very fragile disc! How it didn’t shatter I’ve no idea.
Just use a bench grinder. It’ll sharpen and polish almost every tool.

I could of sharpened 100 bits free hand on a belt grinder in the time it takes to make this. BTW cut off wheels are not made for side impact or grinding. Keep doing it and one will explode very violently. Furthermore most drill hex nut is close at 60 degrees but it is not 59 and the wider the bit the more it will be off. Even that 1/2 inch bit you could tell is off. Plus there is another 10-12 degree angle you need to relieve the cutting edge you are totally missing. It is a compound angle. Then lastly my final thought is most abrasive wheels are NOT made to cut aluminum and doing so can make them explode. I see people do it all the time but it will get them one day. Aluminum load up in the pores of the wheel it gets hot and expands and the wheel blows up. But what do I know I only went to school for welding and machine tooling and got a proper education on the subject and do not rely on want to be hacks to show me unsafe ways to do one of the most simplest trades in the business. I did not finish the video to see the results because everything you did to get them is teaching others bad habits. People get a standard bench grinder and dress the wheel and watch a couple videos on how to free hand with a drill guide to keep to point centered and the 59 degree angle. It is a skill that will lat you a life time. You can take a Broken bit and make it cut like new.

Excellent video, thanks. I've sharpened hundreds of drill bits just by eyeing them and checking with a gauge. Your fixture is simple, time saving, and very effective, although I'm going to make one for my bench grinder instead of using the angle grinder. Yes, I am fortunate to have a bench grinder better suited to this task.

Unless you want to have your eyes out and bits of shattered cutting disk embedded in your face!
This is an extremely dangerous practice and you should never use a thin cutting disc in this way.
And after all that the drill still isn't sharpened correctly.

Please remove this video. Never grind on the side of any grinding wheel unless it is a Dish typw wheel made for that type of use. Also no way to hold bit properly or have ANY idea of how the flute is indexed when "Shining up the end". that's the most being done here. Get a pedistal grinder and a drill point gage. Then PRACTICE!.Take it from an old toolmaker. We NEVER die just grind away!!!

I'm not going to say its the best way to sharpen.. But don't be so down on the grinder disc use.. You can safely grind with a cut disc if you know what your doing.. I've got more hours welding then most people have driving.. Been doing it a long time

Just use a stone on a bench grinder, Thise discs are not designed for side load that should have Been a grinding disc mich thicker and for the job ,Disappointing that Drill bit if done correctly would have not been Bouncing uneven cutting and was a oval hole 😂, if Done correctly it would have been perfect Round hole with even cutting Swarf windings of the cutting Edge , Looking at the Sharpness of that i knew it would have been Bouncing in the work and the end Result, Absolutely Shocking Demonstration, 🤬☹️
