No chain theater will show an NC-17 film and most newspapers won't carry ads for an NC-17 film. Basically, NC-17 is sinking your chances of being profitable because it can only be shown in 'art theaters'.
The Black Hole some R rated movies that are more raunchy than usual get a C rating , which means only adults , they ask ID and they don’t let minors , not even with their parents
@@yveltalpoderoso1303 still, the only thing they're regulating is maintaining age resctriction, not regulating the content itself. In the US even the supposedly "taboo" rated no one 17 or under (18 plus) films aren't actually uncut, they're really not far off from the more mainstream directed R rating approved movies (which are also already heavily censored via the despotic rule of the MPAA). In Mexico they don't really care about taboos, this is too harsh content, this is too dark a direction (not enough in line with mainstream conventions of thought), etc. At least they don't care about fictional content enough to ban it. It's infantile America that reacts in that rigidminded a...reactionary direction. The wolf of wall street did got an NC-17, but it was toned down for an R. I'm fully aware. The sex and nude scenes you saw in the final cut are very explicit but short. Originally, they were much longer. The gay orgy scene I do know was definitely one of the scenes that need to be trimmed for an R rating. The director Martin Scorsese ask the MPAA if he can push the limit for this movie and they said yeah, It a biography film. The south park movie on the other hand, the time it was submitted to the MPAA back in 1999, they probably felt the films content was more graphic back then than it is now.
Because the director Martin Scorsese knew he would get an NC17 so he made a 4 hour cut that was way worse with things he knew wouldnt be included, when he got the NC17 they said we will remove it if you make it better, and he made it better removing all the even more graphic stuff that was never going to be included which made them feel the movie had gotten much more Safe for Work so they gave it an R rating.
Candace Francis Damn, good info to know. It totally, though, gives credits to Matt’s comment about how “they”, the studios and these censoring bodies, are all in bed with one another.
My mother never cared about the rating. She always decided if I could watch a movie or not based on the movie's theme: If it had any violent/obscene insinuation at the trailler, she wouldn't let me see it (007's movies, for example). If it didn't, she would (The King's Speech). By MPAA's point of view, I could watch 007 but not The King's Speech. But my mother knew what was OK without looking at the ratings. I know a movie can have a little surprise you coudn't see in the advertisement sometimes but parents should do it like my mother did.
If you were a teenager you were close to an adult anyway. Another product of the babied, spoiled post-millennium generation (that always stops and wonders why present society is a bunch of grown SJW, 'ready to try and attack and ban anything they don't like' babies).
You do realize that most movie theaters, retailers, and other forms of purchasing media will not run or sell a movie that hasn't been rated by the MPAA.
Thomas E I don't think there is one simple answer to that question. It seems to be a combination of the misguided belief that self-regulation will lead to less government interference, contractual obligations, and many peoples misguided belief that the ratings actually have real meaning and follow them to the letter. Many independent theaters don't worry about it, but most large theater conglomerates like AMC and Regal won't even show a movie without a rating or with an NC-17 rating (the controversy over a movie called Bully being one of the few exceptions). I doubt most people would disagree that some form of ratings system is useful, but for most, the issue is with the way the MPAA seems to arbitrarily apply their own completely secret rules and then tries to force them onto theaters and other organizations, by a combination of media bullying, and getting parent groups riled up for boycotts.
Thomas E Because the MPAA are in bed with the movie studios and they own the theater chains (pay them). I theorize that box office numbers are total bullshit. It's laughable how every new big film has to break box office records. Now this could be real due to more people (the dumb masses making babies) existing and higher ticket prices. But I do think a lot of things are fudged to appeal to that competitive numbers game that advertises the movie business. The whole Oscar awards thing is totally fabricated. It's just one big wank of themselves and their slaves (actors) to promote "important" films where people shout and cry while "acting" better than everyone else. It's all publicity and payoffs (and blowjobs and sexual favors and molestations, etc.). Wouldn't you do sexual favors in exchange for millions of dollars, a high-quality lifestyle, insured fame and fortune? Easy to say no, but when you've been struggling your whole life and that opportunity presents itself right in front of you and all you have to do is move your hand or head up and down, its probably an easy decision.
How do we know that MPAA isn't just a front of the government anyways? The whole thing is just a shady pile of shit regardless. Whether or not it's run by the government doesn't make a difference at this point, as far as I'm concerned.
Matt Jones Well, I think children under 8 are always accompanied by an adult to the movies, so it shouldn't really matter whether it's PG or lower. Atleast in Finland as long as you have an adult with you, you can go watch pretty much any film that isn't K-18 (NC-17).
These guys are awesome because everything they do is from a neutral standpoint. They attack all demographics for their faults and hypocrisies. Even though it's a cartoon, we could all stand to learn a lesson from South Park.
The stupid rule in my opinion is that you can only say "fuck" once in a PG-13 movie (unless it's used in a sexual manner). First off, how is swearing affecting teenagers negatively? According to their rules, The MPAA ratings board is filled with normal parents, not psychologists. So how do they know how many times a kid can hear a word before they become a mass murdering Demon? Apparently only once... Then there's the whole thing of the MPAA (and a lot of normal americans) thinking that sex is a bad thing. What do you think will happen of a child sees a pair of tits or a dick in a movie? The dumbest example of this is probably when one of the Bourne movies got an R-rating because a billboard had a naked woman in it (the scene took place in France, where that is not that frowned upon). Then there's the whole thing were you can do pretty much any violent act to a "human" as long as the blood isn't red....
unless its a documentary type movie.....Gunner Palace says "Fuck" 42 times and it got PG-13....Bully says "fuck" 15 or so times along with other words and they rated it PG-13...but show a cartoon character getting fucked by a horse for a split second, NC-17...
I'v been saying fuck since I was a little kid, so were all my friends. In a middle school of several hundred children only the adults got upset when the word fuck was said. It's not about what kids can handle, its about what spineless chicken shits can handle.
I mean, you can actually use fuck more than once in a non sexual way in a PG-13 film. I think they cap you at three, though. You can even have nudity in a PG-13 movie if it’s “tastefully done”
The MPAA gave the King's Speech an R and the Dark Knight a PG-13, because hearing the word fuck in speech impediment therapy practice is a lot worse than sadistic violence and cop torture. American rating system is a piece of shit.
The existence of the MPAA is an outrage. If the content on the airwaves must be regulated, it should be regulated by an elected body with objective standards for measuring content.
Most, if not all, mainstream theaters in the US won't carry a film that doesn't have an MPAA rating. Unless some indie film makes a limited release and is a box office smash (vs. projections), it'll likely just never happen.
This is why Big Hollywood is scared of streaming services like Netflix and UA-cam it breaks their market hold on movies allowing people to skip the BS and just get their movie out to people
The reason they didn't want Orgazmo to get a NC-17 rating I think was so they could make profit from the movie, because if it was NC-17 it wouldn't be shown in theaters and wouldn't be able to make as much money as if it was rated R.
Its not just the MPAA and their regulations on movies. Video games also work that way where the indi (or smaller developer) has to be 'by-the-book' for 360 and ps3 certs whereas the bigger named devs get a lot of wiggle room.
After this whole The Interview debacle....I'm really hoping these two are planning a new movie about North Korea. They HAVE to be thinking about it at this point
@paleycenter Thanks for the reply. I was just pointing out a discontinuity error, not really trying to make a point about censorship. "Bleeps" are almost always superfluous though, since 98% of the time we know what word is being bleeped.
Most theaters in the United States are owned by movie theater chains. When they refuse to show NC17 rated movies, in most cases, unrated movies are lumped into that distinction.
I’m glad they did this video. This contradicts the very byline that Americans thrive on- “land of the free, home of the brave.” Free and brave enough only if you have money and connections. Not fair! Thank goodness for Netflix, films that are Unrated and NC-17 level can thrive without consequence on there.
This is why we are not getting another South Park movie in theaters. They actually could get away with much more on streaming and TV these days. I think the Pandemic Special would have been NC-17 if they submitted that to the MPAA. Just because of the bat scene alone!
No that's not the reason. The reason is because they both fought hard as hell and burnt a lot of bridges when they did Team America: World Police, to the point where even the new guys at the MPAA who have to follow the stupid guidelines under the late Jack Joseph Valenti probably have a notice on each of the walls in their offices saying "Do not work with Trey Parker or Matt Stone".
@zttvs Nah, it's officially signed on until 2013 (after which it will probably be re-signed on). Parker and Stone have already stated that they have no plans to stop in the near future.
I have found a lot of videos exposing and bashing the Esrb, which is arguably as bad as the MPAA, but not enough videos exposing the latter. I need to search deeper. What keywords could I use?
The idea of the MPAA was to regulate the Movie industry and apply age ratings to them. The alternative was a government run organization. It's a good idea, it's just corrupted all to thell.
Indiana Jones Raider of the Lost Ark (PG): Contains a scene where a person face melts and bloods comes out and many more intense moments. Frozen (PG): All because of a hidden Dick joke ? That's it Bambi (G): Witnessing death of her own mother deer and some disturbing imagery to add on the horror. Inside Out (PG): I know seriously don't know why this is PG I to watch the movie to see whether it deserves it's PG rating but I couldn't find one.
Antz, Beetlejuice, Poltergeist, Gremlins, Sixteen Candles, Grease, Mommie Dearest, Tommy, Indiana Jones Temple of Doom, are among other PG rated films that don't deserve that rating.
lol I like the editing job at 2:14. I think it's slightly ironic that this is an anecdote about censorship and the paleycenter arbitrarily censors profanity.
I think stories like this are a factor to the current SAG actors and writers strike that is going on right now because of how the big cooperate bosses who sponsor and produce products like the South Park movie constantly have their fingers in their ears and constantly get upset when things don't go their way. Hence why stuff like people at Universal trimming trees taking away shade for the actors on strike during a heatwave to ruin their picket line is out there.
Ya but on the scale (At least according to what the movie scream states.) Isn't NC-17 lower than R. I remember that billy guy using it in his speech about his relationship problem "We started out as hot and heavy R, then we went down to NC-17 now lately it's like we been edited for television."
But yeah I was really ticked off and because I had already opened the CD I couldn't return it. I really hate the fact they censor the songs. Its like "whats the point of selling the CD if your going to censor parts of it and ruin the song?" Seriously if parents don't want their kids to see or hear stuff I guess they can say no. Where I was lucky and my mom was okay with me listening to that music cause I don't do drugs or drink and never have. Censorship can be pretty annoying at times.
It sucks that we live in a world & especially we have no excuses here in the USA or other first world countries... where we KNOW that a system is corrupt, or laws are outdated or should be changed, and people need help and shits unfair & rights get violated and all that, but no one seems to do much of anything about it. Or too little people try and nothing seems to change. And most people are just okay and complacent. Funny how people usually don’t care until they get extremely affected directly
For an R-rated film, anyone under 17 CAN see it, but only if they are accompanied by a legal parent / guardian. For an NC-17 film, nobody under 17 is allowed in, even WITH a parent / guardian.
Right. So why risk getting an NC-17 rating? MPAA are the ones who issue the NC-17 rating, are they not? My point was, why bother with MPAA ratings in the first place? Why don't film makers attempt to market their films without an MPAA rating of any kind? Is there some reason they can't just apply their own rating to it and say "we rate this film as 'caution-advised' which we feel is equivalent to an MPAA 'R' rating."
@fashnek , I love it when they are unhappy too, but that's no reason to shoot yourself in the foot. Censorship and film ratings are bad, and unnecessary. With blogs and social media, there's no reason for this central control any more. People can listen to the opinions of others that they trust.
@Trucidofy you may find them hypocritical, but they are spot on about the MPAA. Google MPAA or 'copyright troll'. If you pirate a movie avail at Wal-Mart for $10 then you should be taken to small claims court, not sued for $15000. The punishment should fit the crime.
Well, I guess that makes sense. Sad that there's not any mainstream theater chain out there willing to show unrated films. I mean, if they wanted to avoid becoming basically a porn outlet, they could always preview the movies themselves... Sounds like an overall culture problem rather than an industry problem.
Censorship ruins the world. That's the art of it. Whatever the art form is. I hate it when companies censor music, and movies. They literally ruin the art form.
Watching them talk, it is like watching a talkative married couple who have a very good relationship who can finish each other's sentences and tell a full version of a story. I love their dynamic.
Did you see the interview where they were saying that exact same thing 😂

It's sexy
2:14
South Park should be a part of American Heritage. The best example of freedom of speech and showing people’s creativity.
@travissgilmore I guess we tried to bleep in 2000? We leave things uncensored now!
@TheRawtic I don't think the entire panel is available, though you may want to check our iTunes channel if you're in the US
That ghost hunters commercial was perfect lol. He actually said "what was that", it sounded like Trey did when he made fun of them
Why do the indie film makers bother submitting their works to the MPAA?
Are theaters in most States not allowed to admit minors to unrated films?
Most theaters in the United States are owned by movie theater chains. When they refuse to show NC17 rated movies, in most cases, unrated movies are lumped into that distinction.
I’m glad they did this video. This contradicts the very byline that Americans thrive on- “land of the free, home of the brave.” Free and brave enough only if you have money and connections. Not fair! Thank goodness for Netflix, films that are Unrated and NC-17 level can thrive without consequence on there.
Fun fact: Saving Private Ryan would of got an NC-17 if Stephen Spielberg wasn't a producer.
That’s absurd
I swear Spielberg is a hypnotist. How else would he have convinced the mpaa to rate Poltergeist PG?
Yeah, it was by far the most disturbing R-rated (14A in Canada!) movie I ever saw as a 13 year old
Idunno about that. Films like Hacksaw Ridge and Passion of the Christ are just as violent and they only got R ratings.
@@sorenthefilmbrony Mel Gibson, man.
Very informative near the end.
They could make a straight PG, Disney-like animated film and the MPAA would automatically rate it NC-17
I feel like the part of the HumancentiPad episode that had to do with Cartman and his mom was based off this.
Seth MacFarlane.
I don't understand the hate, I love all 3 of them. They both hysterical in their own way.
They don't hate Seth MacFarlane. They hate the cutaway gags on Family Guy because they're just random jokes that don't connect to the plot.
Seth is a dogwater bowl
These guys are fucking heroes
because if their is a ad in a video that means they get money for it
2:12 whoops, missed a bleep!
TheCandyHole haha
@zttvs Nah, it's officially signed on until 2013 (after which it will probably be re-signed on). Parker and Stone have already stated that they have no plans to stop in the near future.
what movie are they talking about?
They had lots of MPAA trouble too
I have found a lot of videos exposing and bashing the Esrb, which is arguably as bad as the MPAA, but not enough videos exposing the latter. I need to search deeper. What keywords could I use?
I can't wait for the 2020 season
The idea of the MPAA was to regulate the Movie industry and apply age ratings to them. The alternative was a government run organization. It's a good idea, it's just corrupted all to thell.
Indiana Jones Raider of the Lost Ark (PG): Contains a scene where a person face melts and bloods comes out and many more intense moments.
Frozen (PG): All because of a hidden Dick joke ? That's it
Bambi (G): Witnessing death of her own mother deer and some disturbing imagery to add on the horror.
@@edwardperez8599 I realize to that this also an america issue since places like canada tend to be less harsh on movie ratings
I would like to see another movie, things have changed alot in 10 years.
lol I like the editing job at 2:14.
Its like "whats the point of selling the CD if your going to censor parts of it and ruin the song?"
Seriously if parents don't want their kids to see or hear stuff I guess they can say no.
This should have been a south park bit.
2:14 they missed a bleep. "its fucking scary"
Also won't air on basically any television show.
Matt just described the Illuminati in a nut shell.
"Yeah, it's fuckin' scary."
"And we were like 'What the [bleep]?"
On a video about weird censorship no less haha!
These guys for president!
Isn't there a full length version of this?
These dudes r so brilliant
wtf is the difference between nc-17 and R anyway?
For an R-rated film, anyone under 17 CAN see it, but only if they are accompanied by a legal parent / guardian. For an NC-17 film, nobody under 17 is allowed in, even WITH a parent / guardian.
In Belgium, the Hangover 1 and 2, Borat and Bruno etc. are all Children allowed. Very little censorship!
I love these guys...
@cramdizzl I agree but it won't happen next week. This was the midseason finale, they play 7 eps every 6 months and this was ep 7 :(
@SaveSouthPark07 south park has a contract that ends in 2013 its not ending
Why do i have to click the "skip ad" button every time i want to watch a video?
now i know..Matt's healthy skins secret....didnt leave a single drop there!
Huh?
@aspebb until i read your comment i realised that i had noticed it but it didn't register in my mind till i went back and watched it again!
Trey Parker is my babe XD
@Trucidofy you may find them hypocritical, but they are spot on about the MPAA. Google MPAA or 'copyright troll'. If you pirate a movie avail at Wal-Mart for $10 then you should be taken to small claims court, not sued for $15000. The punishment should fit the crime.
Well, I guess that makes sense.
Sad that there's not any mainstream theater chain out there willing to show unrated films. I mean, if they wanted to avoid becoming basically a porn outlet, they could always preview the movies themselves...
Sounds like an overall culture problem rather than an industry problem.
Did you notice that you put two times up, both being ONE second apart? Just thought you should know.
haha 2:14 Matt didn't get censored but Trey did immediately after
anyone else notice at 2:13 Matt never got bleeped
Censorship ruins the world. That's the art of it. Whatever the art form is. I hate it when companies censor music, and movies. They literally ruin the art form.
The big guys in control. Story of life
i love these ppl.
i love you so much guys
