I always use a heat mat over winter 😊 we live in NZ and it gets really cold/Damp here so I have issues with cuttings rotting over winter. I started using a mix of pon and Fern Fibre with my heat mat. It's so great!
My husband uses a heat mat for our garden seedlings and it works wonderful! I was curious about my plant cuttings and came upon your video. Looks like I’ll be stealing his heat mat in the morning!
Hi Jeff, I love when you do your experiments, so informative! I would be interested in seeing you try soil propagation on a heat mat vs soil props without. My husband propagated tomato seeds on a heat mat this past spring and he had great results, 100% germination; so many, in fact, that he had to eliminate 2 of 3 seedlings in each pot.
this is amazing, thank you so much for showing us your experiments. i am a plant newbie who "adopted" a bunch of props while working at a nursery over the summer + i am so glad i have found your channel! even your livestreams are incredibly informative + im not a big livestream-watching person :) cheers from socal!
I realize I am late to the party but - I tend to add just a drop of seaweed emulsion fertilizer to the rooting water and that seems to really help with getting roots faster. Will buy a heat mat because that is awasome!
@@EverythingPlants - It really was! I grow a lot under lights (I am at 59 lat North in Norway), and have 18-20C and 65% rh, but I wonder if a heat mat under roots would also help plants that are struggling, i.e. underwatered and gone-dormant alocasias, or things that had root rot, etc.? Worth trying!
Wow Jeff am so impressed! Am trying 2 antheriums an a alocashia on a heat mat at the moment . Early days . Fingers crossed 🤞 I got me seeds an corms from the nether lands
I have radiators in my home I'm wondering since I have covers on them if I should try to sit my props there ? 😂 not exactly a heat mat but it sounds like an idea
Totally should! Just try to put something like a dome or cloche over them to keep them humid. I have a book shelf and under the bottom shelf is a heat vent… it’s the best shelf to put all my props on lol
Awesome it’s winter and not alot of sun but currently dark and raining so any quick growth during winter time is awesome. I’ve been thinking about heat mat for propagating 👍🏼
I’ve just planted anthurium seeds in perlite and sphagnum moss how many hours a day do I leave them on my heat mat ? One seems to have sprouted tiny leaves
HI Jeff, many thanks for sharing this very informative experience. Thanks to your advice , I've just bought my first Heat-Mat to use it with my cutting propagations :) May I ask you how many hours per day I shall set the Heat-Mat on for Water & Perlite-Box Propagations ?
HI Jeff, Thanks for your response ! so Do you advise that I shall keep it on always (24 X 7) until the propagated cuttings are matured & ready to be potted ?

@@EverythingPlants *_"I rarely use rooting hormone. I've never seen results where I'd say that definitely help"_* It's not uncommon for people to buy the wrong kind. It needs to have one specific ingredient (can't remember the Latin name), or you won't get satisfying results. A good rooting hormone also helps to protect against fungus/bacterial infections. No, they do make a difference, just make sure you buy the right one, and apply it correctly. Heck, even when I started to mix a tiny bit of seaweed extract (=growth hormones) in propagation water, I noticed a huge difference in root growth. Seaweed extract can do magic to plants, it's my most favorite product to add to soil or foliage.
The results of your experiment using heat mat is amazing! I don't have heat mat right now, but had one a few years back, and gave it away as a gift to my son's teacher! I will order one for me soon! By the way, I liked the planting medium you used for soil propagation. Will you please suggest me which one it is? Thank you in advance
@@EverythingPlants yes, the philodendron grazielae , I can't seem to figure that one out. @@EverythingPlants *_"that's like the philodendron golden goddess for me....every method just rots it"_* Rotting is not something that is just the result of bad luck, it always has a cause. Bacterial or fungus infections, lack of oxygen, improper temperature, leaves in the water, etc are some of the main causes. When you look at modern tissue culture laboratories, their #1 priority is always a sterile environment and sterile tools, they use extremes methods to guarantee this. I've also put more focus on that, and I'm indeed seeing far better results. It's amazing what kind of damage things can do that we can't see with our naked eye.
I'll have to get back to you with the brand....I can't even remember which one I have. I know there are many different brands, but all pretty much the same, on Amazon
Wow! I just bought a heat mat off Amazon for seed starting veggies...I'm going to have to get another one for sure. I'm going to do an experiment with little take out containers of nodes in spaghnum on the mat. I never would have thought of this. Thanks so much! 💚
I have cuttings that are doing fine, but I felt that their grow rate was too small. I thought I was doing everything right, based on experience and recent reading, but eventually I suspected the soil temperature, especially lmowing that it slightly drops during the night. Your video just confirms the lack of proper soil temperature... for me at least. I'm now even more convinced that I can improve the grow rate, so I will buy one of these mats (with thermostat). Thank you!
as a researcher, it was painful to see that you didn't have a dirt on the heatmap to complete the 2 by 2 experiment. Other than that, super interesting!
Wow. The heat mat blew my mind lol. I’ve always heard about it, never done a test myself though. So you took the guess work out and MythBusted this hahaha. Great video 👊🏼
Jeff, I have a question. Do you change your water out every 2-5 days rather on a heating pad or not? I’ve heard you are supposed to and I have been. I just recently started the heating pad with my pothos propagation, so I’m curious. Thanks!
Hey Monica.....for the most part I just top up the water. I typically don't replace the water unless it is SUPER gross, but that rarely happens unless it's very long term
Now you just need to do this with every single plant so we know which it works with 😬🤣 For real it would be interesting to see if this worked with succulents or with something that takes awhile like a fiddle 🤷🏼♀️ or a monstera!
