love the dovetails very tidy. but most of all I love your attitude towards the woodworking community giving mentions to other youtube creators and keeping the community as tight as those dovetails.
Every time I watch a new Crafted Workshop video, I see at least one thing that makes me say "I want that!". Today, it's the jointer. I would love to have a good jointer as it's much more difficult to get true cuts without one. I did some dovetail joints this weekend (so this video was perfect timing) and there's no doubt it's a lot of work but it's so good looking (and strong) when complete. Also, happy to see you talked about the grain direction. I've learned about that the hard way.
Sonny You are one of the best Instructors. You learned it so well. Now You give it all to the open. That is up with the best. I will try it as soon as I find the time. Template I like!
You are a Gentleman and I hope it is a Career for You. If not come to Australia and Your life is way open. Just know You are good and got many gifts. Woodwork is fine but You are only young and all is open! I will try it and convert all my templates to go over to Your way
It’s nice to see someone combine hand and power tools to make something lovely. For most people that’s a more realistic approach to woodworking I think rather than purism for the sake of it.
Dude, you are awesome, you inspire me to get better at my woodworking skills. Also I love your shop, some day I will have all the tools you have, they are amazing. Keep it up and God bless.
Awesome. Totally doing this. Oh by the way I used the work bench I won for the first time. My wife and I are foster parents, so i built our foster daughter a toddler bed...so much fun.
Well, I can sure as hell use some hand tool experience, none of my uploaded projects did work out the first time! And I also need a tool box, for the moment I keep my tools in a shoe box... I do like that the chisels have there own place to go, on a kitchen knife style of way. I hope you understand what I mean, i am bad at explaining... Maybe I should copy your design... just kidding, I would modify it to my needs! But you gave some good inspiration!
Wow great looking tool box for just starting on dovetails. I also noticed the grain direction but never thought about it in previous tries but it does mater to some degree. Over all great work
So glad you addressed the grain direction. I was looking at it pretty funny, but then stopped to think about it going the other way and realized that would make the dovetails week. Now I have to go back to my Fine Woodworking mags to find the Tool Tote they built and see which way the grain direction is running.
Yea, it was a bit of a conundrum. The way to handle it would be to make a curved handle so the sides are more narrow. But I didn't feel like doing that!
yep, if you went the other way, you'd have to dovetail it to the bottom and attach the sides in a different way. I think these little conundrums caused by wood grain orientation are one of the things that make woodworking so interesting.
Nice project did have a little chuckle when you say you wanted to get some practice in with hand tools, then use the table saw, band saw, mitre saw, thicknesser, planer, and pillar drill 😀
Hey! I hit the 2000th like for this video. Slowly gathering tools and soaking up as many of these videos as I can before I begin my 1st project. Thanks for the great ideas and videos.
Nice video, great project! No criticism, just a funny observation. You made a Hand Tool Tote with, well, pretty much power tools! It would have been pretty cool to see it made with hand tools. Oh, a project suggestion for you!! Regardless, nice work and thanks for the ideas and clarifications along the way!
that looks awesome Johnny! and good stuff man Southpaw so am I..💪 check out Doucette and Wolfe furniture that guy does some beautiful work.all by hand..
You didn't mention an adjustable square or the dovetail guide when you outlined the tools that went into the tote. Obviously, you needed something to set the angle. I agree with the revision in wood choice. The problem (at the outset) is that dovetails go in end grain. If the side is "tall", then the board has to be wide. This is a poor choice in a project like this. Your proposed revision was a good one. I would use 12mm Baltic birch plywood. It dovetails well and is super pretty and super strong. Thanks for the build...
Great video!! I'm really inspired now to try to get into some hand-tool work. I've never even tried to make a dovetail joint yet so, I'm going to look into the vids you mentioned and try to come up with a tool box similar to yours. Great video!!!!
Had UA-cam on random play and you came up. Nice build, attractive 'carry-all' as they were called at my trade school. You may eant to consider orientating your grain around 90° for the ends. Likely not an issue in your shop but if I were to take that on site etc a knock to the end could snap the skinny section leading to the handle. You didnt mention in the video (or I missed it) is that why there appears to be three ply glued to the inside under the handle holes? Obviously start typing before the 8:53 mark lol. All good.
Wow! Would not have chosen that grain orientation for the end pieces. I would have run the grain up and down, the way it is the handle can be broken off of that tote. Just get finished writing that and he talks about how it broke.
"I found some scrap walnut". Damn. In my neck of the woods (Finland) walnut is expensive as hell (about 4500€/cubic meter) so I hang on to every splinter of walnut that is left over from projects. So over here, walnut is no scrap :D
Nice I am a tin-smith by trade however passionate about wood working, is it wrong for me to build one for my metal working tools? Ha either way I am in agreement this is a perfect way to sharpen up on hand tool work.
Lovely build but please can you recess the bottom into the sides. It adds lots more strength to the construction, it looks a lot nicer and it only takes a few minutes
great tool tote sir, awesome design, just subed. how do you like those narex chisels? I'm in the market for some new chisels and am looking at stanley sweethearts, woodcraft store brand, i believe woodriver and narex the imperical sized
Thanks man! I'm digging the chisels, but I don't really have any experience with other chisels. I did have the pleasure of using a Lie-Nielsen corner chisel during the class last week, and it was just a totally different experience. That said, that one chisel cost as much as my set of 7 Narex Bevel-Edge chisels.
Crafted Workshop - Once upon a time I used to ride a bike with stabilisers but I didn't count myself as being able to "ride" a bike until those stabilisers came off. There comes a point in woodworking when it's less about craft & skill and more so about the operation of tooling....
Crafted Workshop - I didn't say you were cheating. My remark is one of standpoint but jigs can be had for nearly every aspect of woodworking. At what point do you stop woodworking and simply processing wood through machines? Anyone can read a set of instructions..... A plane takes a considerable amount of skill to sharpen, set up and use well - you'd struggle to do the job it facilitates without one.....
I don't know why but I'm 15 and started using just hand tools I've used power tools all my life but so far I haven't had to use a guide to cut a straight line idk why does it depend on the saw
How is that click bate. you could not make it any more straight forward. Click bate would be "You would not believe what this guy tries to do with dovetails!!!!"

I am thin, and old ... and if someone pointed this out, I would agree with them. Sweet build man! Love the finished project! sweet work all around! and thanks for the shoutout!
Thanks man!
Nicely done! You have a future in teaching! You organized this video perfectly! RWB ❤🎉
love the dovetails very tidy. but most of all I love your attitude towards the woodworking community giving mentions to other youtube creators and keeping the community as tight as those dovetails.
Thanks man! Happy to be part of it, lots of awesome people here.
Here here!
Love the contrast

+Sooner Keith thanks man!
I learned to cut dovetails over the summer of 2018 on stumpy nubs saw bench. Maybe I will try this tote since I could use it. Really nice work.
Sonny You are one of the best Instructors. You learned it so well. Now You give it all to the open. That is up with the best. I will try it as soon as I find the time. Template I like!
Thanks a lot, glad I could help!

I am in hand tool woodworking but I admire your work, honesty, and all. Bravo for your work!
Thanks a lot!

Awesome. Totally doing this. Oh by the way I used the work bench I won for the first time. My wife and I are foster parents, so i built our foster daughter a toddler bed...so much fun.
Man, I love hearing that! So glad it went to someone who is using it.
Good looking tote!
Thanks Caleb!
Just Love it Man.. that is cool. Gonna make one for myself
Good craftsmanship..
Nice video too.

+Workshop on Wheels hah, thanks! I totally get what you're saying!
Splendide i must say
Beautiful hand tools

Gorgeous box! Job well done sir👍
fantastic work indeed I see this on instructables.great build.
+Ashish kv thanks man!
Awesome.
man this looks fantastic!!
+Cactus! workshop thanks man!
What a fine piece!!!
Thank you!
Nice project did have a little chuckle when you say you wanted to get some practice in with hand tools, then use the table saw, band saw, mitre saw, thicknesser, planer, and pillar drill 😀
+Robert Mansell hah, yea I'm not going all hand tools just yet. Maybe in a future build!
Awesome Loved the vid. I like how you pointed out your mistake. Tons of respect :)
Awesome job Johnny the tool tote looks great. I'm just starting learning dovetails and you aren't fooling with the tight tolerances. You did great!!
Thanks Thom!
Great looking tote! The dovetails look great!
+Bruce A. Ulrich thanks Bruce!
Looks great man. That chisel holder on the side is clever, haven't seen that before
Thanks man! I ran out of room inside the tote so I had to get creative, hah.
Beautiful!!!
Thanks!
How have I never seen your channel before? Great tool tote, look forward to going back and checking out your older vids now!
+Mario Cappellano thanks Mario!
Really nice
Thanks!
Hey! I hit the 2000th like for this video. Slowly gathering tools and soaking up as many of these videos as I can before I begin my 1st project. Thanks for the great ideas and videos.
Nice, thanks Peter! Good luck!
Good job! That turned out great.
+The_EricLee thanks!
Nice Tote
+Specific Love Creations thanks!
Great job. Love the design and quite a bit of intricate handwork.
Thanks Chris!
+Mark Mac hah, yea I'm not that great of a hand tool user, hence the power tools. Maybe eventually!
Nice Johnny! Really upping your game. Very cool
Thanks Guy!
Great build Johnny! I may have to pick up that dovetail guide looks pretty useful.
Thanks Rick! They're fun, still very time consuming though!
Simple and nice .
+Dharmendra Sharma thanks!
Super Projekt und eine Abo
Cool to see you using more handtools (:

Yup, I’d used Baltic Birch if I built this again. Thanks!
Great video!! I'm really inspired now to try to get into some hand-tool work. I've never even tried to make a dovetail joint yet so, I'm going to look into the vids you mentioned and try to come up with a tool box similar to yours. Great video!!!!
+BookofIsaiah (Matt B) thanks man! Go for it. I had only cut one practice dovetail joint prior to diving in on this. You can do it!
Pretty
+Jason Barre thanks!
Good job I hope more business I wish you success always
Follow you from Egypt
+sherif Halim thanks!
I'm left handed as well do you find it more challenging using right handed power tools or is it just me?
Parabéns!!! Meu nome é Danielle, sou do Brasil e gosto muito seu trabalho
Thanks!
very nice!
+Franco Giannotti thanks!
i'm totally hooked to your channel!!! i have been watching your vids for the last 2 hours, keep up the good work buddy, totally subscribing.
+Luis Eduardo Toledo thanks a lot man, glad you're enjoying them!
Great job,....New subscriber,....enjoyed very much!
+NC Sandman thanks!
nice work, just gave me some ideas for a beer tote lol.
Thanks man!
Great build, no wonder it's a bit heavy with all those planes in it ha ha
Barry (ENG)
Hah, for sure! Lots of steel in there!
you should have shown a picture of the bookshelf you made in the class.
I posted a bunch of pictures on my social media, figured people might be sick of it :) Check my Instagram account.
Duck tales, uooooh! Who else kept thingink of Daffy's rich uncle?
Nice tool tote PS i have sendt the pictures kind regards from Anton
Yup, they're waiting in my inbox! Been playing catch-up. Thanks!
Nice
Had UA-cam on random play and you came up.
Nice build, attractive 'carry-all' as they were called at my trade school.

Obviously start typing before the 8:53 mark lol. All good.
+Dave's Cave hah, yup! Definitely a bit tricky with the grain orientation. Thanks, welcome to my channel!
I didn't see you mention any measuring tools or a square I would think that would be a necessity. However super nice job on the dovetails.
+Tommy thanks! I did bring a combination square and tape measure with me.
Practice practice practice 😉
Hah, indeed!
I'm surprised that youre using Narex chisels, I didn't know you can buy them outside of Czechia
Never seen a little hand jig like that for dovetails - do you have a link to it? Great vid as always!
Thanks! Here you go: www.highlandwoodworking.com/david-barron-magnetic-dovetail-saw-guide.aspx?A=1369&B=28
Awesome thank you very much!
Nice I am a tin-smith by trade however passionate about wood working, is it wrong for me to build one for my metal working tools? Ha either way I am in agreement this is a perfect way to sharpen up on hand tool work.
No man, would be great!
Is there no one on youtube that has a workshop like mine, you show us how to make this stuff but not everyone has $40,000.00 worth of tools
+Theknotman1964 I mean, I do this for a living so I can afford to invest in nicer tools. Definitely don't need them though!
I was thinking the same thing. Easy to build this with all the nice tools.
Lovely build but please can you recess the bottom into the sides. It adds lots more strength to the construction, it looks a lot nicer and it only takes a few minutes
+Born to Make it's a little late for that, but you're welcome to if you build one.
Crafted Workshop ok, but thanks it was a great build
+Born to Make thanks!
Hi, was wondering what the make of the mallet is you use, looks a lovely weight and size
Yea, it’s this one, really like it! amzn.to/2GdfOtW
Lovely thanks very much, great Chanel by the way
Thanks!
great tool tote sir, awesome design, just subed. how do you like those narex chisels? I'm in the market for some new chisels and am looking at stanley sweethearts, woodcraft store brand, i believe woodriver and narex the imperical sized

👋👋👋
+Crafted Workshop can you tell me what yellow clamp you have at 1:32 ?
+hinduspl it’s the Jack Clamp.
What tools can you fit in the tool tote?
I show that towards the end of the video.
great build video!
5:08 though.... 😂🤔🍆
what sander did you use?
It’s made by Mirka.
Nice looking tote. Not sure I would consider myself to be hand cutting dovetails if I were using a Baron jig.....
+Jaime Clifton thanks, but what else would it be? It's just a jig.
Crafted Workshop - Once upon a time I used to ride a bike with stabilisers but I didn't count myself as being able to "ride" a bike until those stabilisers came off.
There comes a point in woodworking when it's less about craft & skill and more so about the operation of tooling....
+Jaime Clifton a plane is a jig for a chisel essentially, do you consider that cheating?
Crafted Workshop - I didn't say you were cheating. My remark is one of standpoint but jigs can be had for nearly every aspect of woodworking. At what point do you stop woodworking and simply processing wood through machines? Anyone can read a set of instructions.....
A plane takes a considerable amount of skill to sharpen, set up and use well - you'd struggle to do the job it facilitates without one.....
woah, nice toolbox! I might end up making one just for fun. plus, what's the song you're listening to at 7:43? prog listener?
+Gianguido Sorà thanks man! That's Protest the Hero, great kind of prog metal.
Oh, that's Limb for Limb! Yeah, they make awesome music for sure!
What are the dimensions?
I don't know why but I'm 15 and started using just hand tools I've used power tools all my life but so far I haven't had to use a guide to cut a straight line idk why does it depend on the saw
The guide just helps to nail the angles consistently.
Who makes the spoke shaves ?
+Matt Hallman HNT Gordon
wooow a wonderful result! Greetings from my channel
Thank you!
I support your non click bate title 🙄
How is that title click bait?
Crafted Workshop haha read it again.
How is that click bate. you could not make it any more straight forward. Click bate would be "You would not believe what this guy tries to do with dovetails!!!!"
But...you probably don't support their sub standard reading comprehension skills...lol
Crafted Workshop i think he sad it becouse of recent wranglerstar video. he ment it good way.
Is crafted a tool company or your own name?
It's the name of my channel and business.
Thanks I thought maybe it was a tool line and I couldn't find it lol
You're left handed?!? Unsubscribe ;) Cool build though, so re-subbed =)
+Hubbard's Handmade hah, thanks!
Great vid. Thanks! Matthias Wandel vid: ua-cam.com/video/co3EH8WZsX8/v-deo.html
Take those earrings off
What world do you live in where you think making a comment like this is OK? I just don't get people like you.
I suppose he's expressing his opinion, i.e. he doesn't like the appearance of your ear-rings, whereas, clearly, you do.
In today's world, I think we can sometimes be too inclined to think that others should not express an opinion which we do not like. I am thin, and old ... and if someone pointed this out, I would agree with them. On the other hand, if, as some people do, someone objected to my wearing socks with sandals, I write them off as 'mistaken,' (i.e. 'stuff you!)
Thanks for the upload. Nicely done.
They are not earrings, they're earring plugs or just plugs. You don't take them off, you take them out. You really should not what you are hating on.
Do u actualy think this is ok he can wear what he wants
Eh?!
