Well that brings back memories! Found some pictures at home of the Unipower HET and Nicolas trailer in the workshop shortly before trials and thought I’d look on UA-cam to see if still exists. Thanks for the trip down memory lane….

Great video, love to watch these super heavy oversized loads maneuver in traffic. I used to haul much smaller oversize loads like continuous miners, shield haulers, dozers and various other heavy equipment to our local coal mines here in Utah, but never anything as super sized as this.

'Toontrain'- I think ALE have lots of work around the world, so I'm fairly sure the Unipower won't be finished with just yet.
The first of these three moves had a Trojan front and rear, and on this the third move the Unipower is playing a major part as you can see.

I've just read on another website that ALE are making 6 of these new Trojan 8870's to replace their existing fleet, that being the case I do hope that they don't scrap the Unipower MH8875 as it is in effect "The Last Scammel" and deserves to be preserved as much as any Wynns Contractor, Diamond T or Pacific

Toontrain the last Scammel (used as a tank transporter by the British army) was the Commander or the s26 used by ALE and other heavy haulage operators, both were build at the Scammel works in Watford which doesn’t exist anymore.

Also took reconditioned CV12s to REME at Bovington. The engine plant is now owned by Caterpillar, and all reconditioned engines go 10 miles down the road to COD Donnington.

I get it now...they have every light flashing so that all those support vehicles who have their lights flashing are aware that everyone else is there because if they didn’t have all their lights flashing someone might miss that the two hundred ton lorry in the middle of the road. Other than that, only one motorist needs to know, and that is the car coming towards them...and who is not going to miss a lorry that size, flashing lights or not. Bit of an overkill even for health and safety.

Each police force has it's own abnormal load dept. When your planning a move, you have to liaise with each forces' area you go through. Several years ago, we were planning a move, and contacted one force, to be told that their abnormal load dept was 1guy, but he'd retired, and they hadn't replaced him!

Abnormal Load Engineering. I believe the original company was Robert Wynnes of Newport and I think it was the sons that became involved in setting up ALE. I am sure someone will know with more accuracy. Wynnes pretty much always built or heavily modified their tractor units and it seems ALE have gone a few stages further with their Trojans. What an absolute beast of a machine and what control over all the operating elements of all the matching units when coupled together. They may be more economical than many of their predecessors but I still wouldn't want the fuel bill for one.
