Classic Game Room reviews VALKYRIA CHRONICLES for the PS3 from Sega released in 2008, one of the best tactical strategy games ever created!
I hadn't even known this was a game until recently when I bought it on steam for $15. Definitely one of the best games I've ever played! The anime is nice too.
If you still confused, I'll helpexplain
Valkyria Chronicles is a mix of strategy RPG and 3rd person shooter. Just as the video shown, you choose your troop, order them to move/shoot/disarm/heal/repair. The action are real time, you can intercept movement by shooting enemy that running in your line of sight (only for scout, shocktroopers, and engineer, anyway), enemy can do the same too. Just don't run into enemy in open field.
There's also mechanic called Command Point (the one that looks like a bar of gold medal in command mode), you can order a unit more than once in your turn as long as you have enough CP. There's also "Order", it's like giving buff to specific unit that last for one turn. Of course there's arsenal upgrade.
Also, the class level isn't tied to individual, but to everyone in that class. Class level can be upgraded through headquarters training ground, not in mission. eg: If you level up scout class to level 6 from 5, every scout in your roster is automatically level 6. So, even though death is permanent, you can recruit new soldier without worrying about their level.
And about death, even though it's permanent, you can safe them when they're down. When they're dying, you can evacuate them to safety. Just approach their body and they are safe and ready to be deployed in the next mission. They are considered "permanently dead" if you left them dying in 3 turns, or enemy passing their downed body, finishing them. So far, I only lost 1 soldier. Okay, 2 soldiers. The last one is because the story told her to die. You know who she is if you played this game already.
That's one of the 3 most memorable games on the PS3 for me.
This game is life crushing, potentially dangerous, whatever. Yesterday I sat at the PC playing this until 4AM. Or was it 5?
The remastered edition is coming out on PS4 in the West in May.
12/27/20 My journey at attempting to watch all Classic Game Room reviews continues. I've worked through Season 11 and now here I am in Season 12.
Will I ever scale this mountain? If you find this entry, perhaps you'll find entries in other videos too, cataloguing this journey.
I hope there's more Hello Kitty reviews...
This looks awesome. I should really stop listening to Zero Punctuation for all my game purchases.
+Leviathon672015 I love Zero Puncuation, but even he ha admitted he is not a fan of JRPGs. I love his reviews, but decide to form my own opinion on a game even when he doesn't like, as I have disagreed with him on games such as Nier, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, Uncharted, Dead Space, and more.
Yeah, I watch him for entertainment only. Although if Yahtzee likes a game, it's probably pretty good.
I wouldn't consider valkyria chronicles a jrpg at all, I mean it has one of the many anime art styles and you get some typical japanese chracter types, though you get those types in most japanese games even games like metal gear which aren't exactly anime inspired (some parts are influenced though).
Issue is he didn't even really play the game. It seems like Yahtzee played a bit of it and quit before he got very far into it. Based on what he said about the story, progression and such. You can tell when a reviewer doesn't finish or barely plays a game they make a video on, as they barely explain anything if at all. lol
Kameraden I wouldn't consider ZP reviews. It's satire more than anything, he trashes all games. It's also pretty much a known fact that he typically hate JRPGs.
Getting this game tomorrow. Looks great!
Getting this game you should. I love it since I got it. VC2 is not the same level but still highly enjoyable. I have 70+ hours in VC2 so far and I'm still playing it after I completed the story mode.
Dukefazon
Cool. I plan on playing VC2 as well once I finish the first one. Gotta finish Diablo III first tho.
it totally is man, it's gotta be the most underrated masterpiece out there
PC version just came out for the first one... Time to be elite xD
LJ3783 I agree. I bought the ps4 version last week on a whim for £12 and am not disappointed. The story and gameplay are amazing but the way the story is presented and the character development is what truly makes this a masterpiece. I completed it last night and honestly cannot remember when I last cared so much about a cpu game story.
Still the best review of my favorite game. Plus, SEGA just announced Valkyria Revolution June 27!!!
Intro hits hard with headphones.
This was my birthday gift. I loved it so much.
"I do have a heart. I took it from a unicorn.
Hahah, loving this guy's reviews.
I like how Mark does reviews. He doesn't take the game too seriously and gives you a good impression of how it plays. He like to have fun with the game, which is what video games are all about.
Glad this is coming out to pc in a few weeks.
Scouts aren't weak. . .
Ever heard of Alicia rushing?
Then you never heard of Selvaria rushing? A Tank that was a scout in disguise?
zhaoyun255 Selvaria is a one-woman death squad. She's hot too. LOL
Barry Clark
Who wouldn't drool over her? Those melons are delicious.
You make a great point sir. And I do love melons. LOL :-)
Barry Clark
Hmmmmmmm, nomnomonomonom, Yummyyyyy. I might call Scorpion to cook something with melons for me.
He's putting it in a Dreamcast at the beginning? Holy fuck, I love this channel.
This game is all kinds of awesome; I can't believe it came out in 2008, how time flies by!xD The art style is magnificent, shame it the sequels transitioned to handheld, most likely because it cost less to produce but it would of been spectacular if they originally stayed on consoles because it was essentially eye candy! Oh, totally forgot about the gameplay! It was a nice breath of fresh air, tactical-role playing at it's finest. Just so engrossing and addictive.:P
one of the most awesome SRPG ever created on console ever ! loved this game hope they remade both 2 and 3 to playstation 3 &4 or vita or better yet, a new entry to the series !
Valkyria Chronicles is still one of the greatest (arguably THE greatest) PS3 game, even to this day. I am so glad Mark got around to reviewing it! Thank you, Bo!
i bought this game yesterday. the game is awesome!!!
Bought it this weekend. It is one of my favorites now for sure.
Glad that Mike Bussler praises this game through the roof because that's totally deserved. The game was just poorly promoted. Now we have VC 4 on the PS4 and a remaster of this gem right here.
What I really loved in this game is that there were many situations where I was about to fail but found a way to turn the tides. The level where Selvaria first appeared was really tough. Or the street level where you had to stop the armored car from leaving the docks. I jumped and cheered after beating that level. The graphics are amazing and the writing is just takes it all. I can't express how disappointed that VC3 is not released in the west...
This is one of my favorite games on the PS3! I'm actually a little surprised that you hadn't reviewed it already.
I can't help but smile everytime i hear the cgr intro
I fondly remember this game. It had that kickass style and was really challenging, which is great.
Many PS3 games have come and gone, but VC has always held a special place for me. Mark's right; it's impossible to say anything about this game is bad. It's perfect. No, seriously, try it. "Is the writing weak anywhere?" Nope, the game even had some inspiring scenes. "It's hard but is it too frustrating?" Nope, I keep coming back for more. It's engaging, fun, and has tons of heart.
Classic Game Room review are the most entertaining and informative reviews since the days of unicorns eating ice cream while playing an Atari.
At last! Thank you, Mark! I've been waiting for this review for some time.
I proudly own and cherish this game. It's hard as hell sometimes, but I love it.
Love this game. And one of my favourites this current console generation. In fact, it was the reason I got a PS3. It reminds me what used to make Sega great: absorbing, compelling, innovative and challenging.
bought it a few days ago. just waiting for it to arrive now. idk why i put off playing it for so long but im excited about it now :)
I heard about this game a few years ago and was told it was one of the better games on the PS3 due to it's fresh approach to RPGs. This review showed me the game in all it's glory and to be honest, it makes me really want to play the game if I had a PS3 to play it on.
I have part two and never got to finish because I lost the data on my psp , recently I downloaded it onto my vita and am enjoying every second of it. Truly a masterpiece. I want part one but can't find a ps3 copy, thankfully there is a ps4 remastered version.
Love this game. You didn't mention enough how great the story is. Nice play at the end, i love using shocktroopers to shoot at them in a similiar fashion.
Like Fire Emblem this is my go to SRPG series.. I think a great idea would be a prequel to show what happened with Welkins dad and the origins of the Edelweiss.. In addition to a remaster rerelease of VC 2&3
It is a great game. I really like the cinimatics and story. The controls in battle tho really kills that, especially when your tank is aiming at point blank range but misses for example the turret on the Batomys by 4 feet omfg. I got this game a month ago thx to this review. No regrets currently 33 hrs starting chapt 12.
No flamethrower reference in this episode? that's odd for you mark. what is the name of the R&B music? i love his despite people not liking it!
Thx for the review CGR I'm currently 15h into VC2 on my Vita. :)) game is awesome a perfect fit for for a handheld.
i was on the fence about this game, but now im gonna buy for sure. thanks man.
Great review I love this game. It's kind of hard once you get further on, but I still love playing it. I have the 2nd one on psp. What sucks is that the 3rd one is only available in Japan I wish they would release it here in the states. :(
Thanks for finally reviewing this!
I absolutely love this game, definitely one of my favourite games on the ps3.
Disagree about the snipers though, snipers are fantastic when they have a good vantage point
I love the ragdolling in this game, it just looks so goofy
Just picked this game up yesterday put all games on hold to play this. All I have to say is awesome! I heard they improved on certain things in the sequel but I hope they make a return to ps4 or at least vita or just bring 3 to english!
Bought it used about a week ago but amazon( $18)is selling it cheaper than gamestop ($25 used) and its new. Been going back and getting games i missed on ps3, 360, and wii. Also grabbed lost odyssey, shadow of the damned and xenoblade chronicles. Oh and the last story, there are so many games i missed somehow. But so far im loving this game but out of all the ones i bought recently i would say xenoblade my fav cant wait for X on the wiiu its gonna be amazing(i hope) hell if it plays exactly the sane with hd graphics im fine with that.
***** Lost Odyssey is a whole different breed of epic. I would still be playing the shit out of it today if my 360 hadn't crapped out on me. Still have the game. I wish they would have released it for the PS3 damn it
Oh man I love this game! One of the best stories and overall game experiences I've had. To me, this and the Yakuza series are the best reasons to own a ps3, they simply give you stories and experiences that are like no other. Can't wait for the VC2 review, while the story wasn't as good I felt the gameplay was refined even further and was a lot of fun during my downtime between classes.
Anyone who enjoys this should also give Sakura Wars: So Long My Love a try!
Man. I've wished for this game since it first was announced.
I can't believe what Sega did to this franchise, had the potential to be huge.
I have had this game for a while but I am just waiting for a good amount of time to sit down to really enjoy it.
You mentioned Robocop and Terminator, but what about the Beastmaster? Did the Beastmaster enjoy Valkyria Chronicles?
One of the best games ever, even more so on PC
Some people find it appealing. The point is that he's so down to earth that he doesn't have to try to be amazingly hilarious for people to like him. He speaks the truth, and talks to you like your having a fun conversation in a bar.
I played the demo of this and loved it, yet never got around to buy it. Is it on psn? or do i need to get my ass to town and look for a used copy?
What a great and advanced looking Dreamcast game. It's even got native widescreen support!
I just got this game and finished Chapter 3. I'm enjoying the ride. Go, Team Weltz!
Like Mark mentioned in the video, Front Mission 3 is very good if you like tactical gameplay. If you like first person rpgs, I reccomend Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.
Like someone said earlier, the Souls games are also true masterpieces.
Love this game, wish the sequels came out on the PS3 though! Word of mouth helped make it popular and then they shifted from console to handheld! Way to treat your fans....
Using Aika.
Truly Mark, you are a man of good taste.
This is probably the best game I ever played. It's so sad that this game never had success outside Japan. I think one of the reasons is that it's such an early PS3 exclusive, released when very few people had invested in one.
I spent some time with this game and I enjoyed it all! I wish SEGA would release the 3rd episode, they say it's the best in the series. Until that I bought VC2 for the PSP, the animated series and a book called Valkyria Chronicles Design Archive (vol1 I think, it's a massive 400 page long art book). I just love this game!
One of the gems of the generation.
Speaking of Fire Emblem though, I'd really like Mark to review Awakening. And Etrian Odyssey IV.
I miss these vids
I love Classic Game Room, best game reviews on UA-cam!
I thought you'd might like it! I'm glad you did. It's my favorite game too.
When will you review VC2? I know that it's not as good as this one but I love it too.
Its good.
The story is more simple, but the gameplay is great.
SilverShion
The potential grinding was stupid though. Especially with Phoenix.
Sonya handhelds are very niche that's why there aren't many mainstream games.
This looks interesting.
I've seen this on the store shelves many times, but I didn't think anything of it.
I barely play my PS3, but I may have to give this a try.
as a game that mixed anime with watercolour painting, it has a strong soundtrack, great story, (some) great characters, a lot of themes and layers, and some of the best gameplay ever made for its type. Although when it came to grinding, levelling up, weapon classes and the development of individual soldiers, I thought Valkyria Chronicles 2 was better, and also because there were a lot more side missions with different goals, rather than playing the same skirmishes repeatedly.
2nd game i buy because of your review :3
Is it just me, or are UA-cams extension tabs ("Show More" and "Load More") not working when you click on them?
You shouldn't be clicking UA-cam links at work anyway.
Fantastic game, and one of the most unique games I have ever played.
Demo was removed but it still available if you already downloaded it before. You just have to go back to your past download list and it will be there and is downloadable again. It is no longer available for people who never downloaded the demo before.
I've heard nothing but good things about this game, why the heck am I not playing it yet???
While I haven't played the first one yet, I have played the second on the psp. Honestly, this series is one of my favorite strategy games, right along with Fire Emblem.
happy birthday!!
Easily one of the best games this generation. A timeless classic.
This game was way more than I expected, I loved it, the anime adaptation was great, too.
Belongs to my top 5 turn based tactical games.
Needless to say i completed this one.
this new type of turn base is interesting, i would like to play it soon
Is the gameplay portion entirely battles? Or is there some exploration as well?
Battles only. It's a SRPG, so town exploration isn't that big of a thing.
But even without that this game is my absolute favorite RPG of all times, and i'm a BIG fan of RPGs in general.
It's also coming out on PC in a week, it's 1000% worth it, trust me ;D
no dont but if you take only one route like to raid the enemy base you can be surprised by a anti-tank or a enemy lancaar (the lancers) and you got a mission failed, it got exploration but not in the way i think that you're thiking
no Folklore was just not finished but this is amazing
I agree with your comments about Resonance of Fate. I am playing it now and it is the best rpg ever made, in my opinion. Fantastic trio of protagonists, interesting world, addicting battle system, i love everything about that game. Do you know if the other games made by Tri Ace are as good as Resonance? I wanna try Star Ocean 4, but i heard people saying it is bad.
Agreed! Waiting for VC3 to get translated and hopefully a new VC for the Vita...
Agreed, I've never liked strategy RPG but Valkyria Chronicles is the exception. so is PSP's Valkyria Chronicles 2.
I have the second one and am loving every minute of it. Don't know what sequel you played.
is there an option in the game to not have the white box around it the whole time? or did yo u just add that for the review?
One of my Top 5 this gen, awesome game indeed.
1:09 - Aika from Skies of Arcadia, another Sega's awesome game!
Someone should start a petition to get Sega to localize this title, I'd sign it and buy it.
I can't wait for this to be released on The Magnavox Odyssey
One of the best PS3 games, I really need to replay it.
Holy jesus about time he reviewed this amazing game.
IF YOU HAVE NOT BOUGHT IT, BUY IT NOW.
Playing this game with the Japanese voice over makes it seem even more as though the nations really are foreign. Get it on Steam. Unforgettable experience. You will become an addict.
all in all with the DLC, the first game has a great story, all the characters have a great development
I forgot about this game. I'll have to remember to buy it. I love the psp version.
this game also features guest appearances by Vyse, Aika and Fina from Skies of Arcadia.
FREAKING AWESOME REVIEW!!!
It's been a long time since Classic game room was this good! Infact I don't think it ever has been this good!
BEST REVIEW EVER!!!
Was wondering why I keep watching this show! Thanks for reminding me!
This game is one reason to buy a ps3! Kinda don't like SEGA tough cause the second game doesn't have japanese as a optional voice-over! Still might be something I wanna buy for my psp...
MVHH
did you put that game on a Sport Sega Dreamcast? R u testing us? That's so funny. I love sega too.
"I'm judging a book by its cover and expect to be taken seriously."
That's exactly what you're doing.
Had this for 2 years, but i suck at it and couldn't get past chapter 5. Will give it another shot some day though, i want to get into this game.
Amazing game, my only regret will be never having the Platinum for this since there's no trophy support, but it doesn't need it anyway.
