So far, these have been not only the most informative, but the most thorough, and understandable series of videos related to prospecting. I am new to prospecting, but I am determined to be a knowledgeable and successful prospector. I am glad I ran across your video on gold ores. Is there a video where you cover looking at topographical maps to determine where to start prospecting in certain areas? What landforms, rivers, creeks, plant life, ect. Are good indicators of having potentially decent amounts of gold?
Topography maps are good, but limited in usefulness. Maps of the geology exist and they tell you more about what is going on there as far as geology that supports gold formation.

Hey Chris, I live in Juneau Alaska.. I keep on finding what would be pyrite with everybody's first guess on first glance, upon further investigation you can see it is very glob like with face centered cubic crystals strewn through... It has a texture somewhat similar to pyrite but the most distinguishing thing about it is it's red tarnish deep maroonish brown akin to the color of gold oxide powder. I'm a pretty experienced prospector but not very good with the smelting aspect but I do have some success.. one of the largest issues is I choose to prospect instead of work and have little funds.. my question is whether or not from my description, I know you can't be certain but if it sounds like what I've found is maybe natural electrum of some kind? I know and remember and old saying that goes "the redder the better" haha a response would be gladly appreciated, thank you for so many amazing videos and awesome channel.
Red is not gold, but most likely iron. Electrum is pale yellow green to silvery in color, not red. Iron pyrite is much more common than gold or electrum. Iron is very common, being the 4th most common element on the earth's surface. Get a small lead fishing weight and put it on a very hard surface and strike it hard with a hammer. It will smash and flatten out. Now do the same with your suspected electrum. If it shatters when you hit it hard, its not any form of gold or electrum. If it flattens like the lead, you may have something.

Nice video Chris, have found many pieces of crystalline gold here in Australia. unfortunately we add photos in the comments on youtube as I would have added some. Have also found a couple of flat leaf gold pieces which were found in a dry creek bed that naturally have been rolled up like foil.

Have just come back from a bit of prospecting in the south . Our guide for the day, Steve, taught us a lot about his claims etc and we were lucky enough to be shown his collection of specimens that he found in a large geode. It was quartz with what he called lace gold, which looked like roots of a tree sticking out from the quartz. Absolutely awesome stuff, pretty good when you find 20 ounces the first day and it continues for two more days! Hey but it took him 8 years of searching! Perseverance can pay off! Here is the problem. Only people living in Alabama would be interested. Since 99.9% of my audience is not in Alabama, they could care less and would not watch. Spending hours on a video that maybe 10 people would be interested in does not make sense. I have done a few of these and will do a few more on the west (where I live), but the western places have more prospectors. Use Google to do some research and find out more about gold in Alabama.
He just doesn't realize all the gold that we have over here im Alabama and Georgia...... and he's missing out on a HUGE audience potential because there are thousands of prospectors over here..... oh well it suits me fine because the less people looking, the more gold for me to gather.....

Just started prospecting about 6 months ago. i have a bunch of gold bearing green shale and would like to know how to extract it. Also, I collected a lot of what looks like crystalline gold, to me, anyways, however the material is not shiny but very heavy. is it gold or not? Most likely these are gold colored minerals and not gold metal. Golden colored mica is common in many granite rocks.

I live in the pediment of NC. I have permission to River sluice and pan. The creek has lots of sand with granite and some quartz out crops in the bank. The area I’m in is in the gold belt. What I’m asking is there gold in the sand or under it near bedrock. Any info would be appreciated.
Not even knowing which creek you are talking about, there is no possible way I could know. I suggest you get out and spend some time sampling the ground to see where the gold is and even if there is gold in that particular creek. The gold is not found in every stream, even in the gold belt.

Hey Chris I been contemplate why gold is where it is. does it tends to be near volcanic activity, west coast due to folding, but Alaska is loaded too why so much more fracture filling on our west coast? Son of a gun just open my icmj mag and your talking about mesonthermal gold formation, have to give it a read now.
Alaska has many volcanoes, but gold is NOT always near volcanic activity. Lots of tectonic activity on the west coast but it does not always go with volcanic activity.

They are different with different capabilities. In some areas one would perform better and in another area the other would be better. Its not a simple question.
I have so many different crystals, fossils, gold specimens, silver specimen, just a miniature museum of so many awesome minerals and fossils to bones and so much more. And it's all right here in my hometown, Erie Pa!!!!

This is great. I am not particularly choosy about what I pick up. I just like rocks. I dunno. I am sure that will change. Anyway I wanted to tell someone I found a piece of quartz with what I assumed was just a hard line of crud marring it's surface. The line was thick here and thin there, you know. Well I was happily scrubbing away at the darn thing when all of a sudden this beautiful golden glow began to emanate from the entire surface. When I say emanate I mean it shined! It had a glow coming off it's glow. So bright, but a smooth, smooth, deep yellow gold. Not the hard cold shine of mica or pyrite. Shocked, I continued scrubbing furiously for another stroke or two before it crossed my mind that I needed to stop because this wasn't an ordinary rock, at least not something I usually found. I have never seen any gold, mind you, plenty of iron pyrite, other shiny substances, but somehow I just knew what this was. Thought I did. Even sort of hoped. Cause people laugh at me and my rocks. Not that I care, lol. Anyway, I wish I could send you a picture. No telling how many of this particular rock I have left laying on the ground or embedded in the side of the bank. Perhaps many. Perhaps none. Perhaps I don't have a clue what I am, at this point, even venturing to state a speculation about. . I just feel that this rock ain't from the po' side of town. Oh. Reading some of the comments and your replies I want to be clear that I am not looking for your time and expertise. I know how valuable time is. I can do my own research and your video was an important part of it. You would be a gifted extemporaneous speaker. Have a great weekend.

That is the issue - in some areas limestone has valuable gold deposits in many other areas it is barren and has nothing. I have no idea which category your area falls into. The same is true of other kinds of rocks. It is not as simple as you would wish gold geology to be. What is more important is to know what is the host rocks in your area, but that changes all over the world. In some places one rock is good, in other places other rocks are good. Some places have iron and gold, while others have iron and no gold. It is not simple.

Thanks for another great video Chris. I watch them all. I am a seasoned detectorist for gold, but i always like to watch videos on prospecting. I never stop learning and enjoy watching your videos. I have learned a few more tips and tricks from your videos.
We have quite a few old ground sluice surface diggings in my area of California, and people ask me once in awhile how this type of surface mining was conducted. I tell them what i know, but here and there i hear others tell of what they know about ground sluicing, and they have a different description of the operation. Google doesn't have a whole lot on this type of mining. I know you covered many types of mining on previous videos but it would be great if you could do a video about ground sluicing and other surface mining techniques and the equipment they used to do them. I have found alot of great gold at ground sluicing operations, they are one of my favorite. God bless

Could you provide 60x to 90x loop pictures of the minerals with Teenie weenie gold balls? Never see anything up close on other sites. It's easy to see the larger nuggets embedded in minerals. I have my prospecting liscence and the gold in the area is supposed to be tiny balls if gold spaced in conglomerate

I live in gold country of CA and having been picking raw specimens that might contain the good stuff, Do you, or know of a good process to appraise quartz/ gold pieces , and other concentrated ore in micro (handed picked -pick up truck loads) With these crystal and gemlike it looks like these pieces become collector /art objects and the sales storytelling creativity can rocket the price to the right person and having them appraised for crystal mineral type would be a service that could allow for better marketing and off to shows even if they are virtual. What do you think?
Gold specimens with loads of big gold will set off a metal detector and indicate non-ferrous (not iron). Metal detectors are how most of these pieces are found.

I may have found a significant amount of it and I need some help with it. This is in the state of Maine I'm working with someone to identify it but in the event that they are having a hard time identifying it I would certainly like a second opinion all they've seen so far have been photos as it's a distance away but what I have seems to be gold bearing granite

Can sylvanite and calvarite be found with a gold detector.
No, they cannot be found with a metal detector - they are not metal and do not conduct electricity. Minerals that contain some metal generally do not show up on a detector.

@@ChrisRalph ok thanks anyway I know how to identify gold ore I've done every test in the book it's passed with flying colors only test it hasn't passed is the convincing humans one lol I also think because the area I live in Rhode island east coast has little to no gold no one found the mother load in the east coast yet.... But I think I have it's just not BRIGHT yellow because it's alloyed with silver so it's pale

Looks like it could be a bowl of corn flakes. When they are so rough and thin, not any nuggets that have rounded edges or areas! If you use your imagination, it could almost look like scrambled eggs as long as most pieces have yellow in them.

it’s part of timming belt so spacialy in my sector , there are many square miles of claim by this compagnie but manage to claim my land whitch was never realy test because l’m at the bottom of the montain so to reach the bed rock you have to take out 2 feets of vegetal , 16 to 24 inches of clay and 12 to 16 feets of gravel then you reach the bed rock , no gps can work aroung because of to much meneralisation. but now l just find you channel so without you knowing , you just became my best friend ... l’m in (my english is far from perfect but doing my best)

Chris Ralph, Professional Prospector it’s nice from you to take time to answer in french , yes gold is not easy to find but l manage to get some in few river in Quebec , l have been thinking about buying a placer or even a old mine just to have the pleasure to do for the reste of my life what l wish l had done all my life . it’s not even about making big money but just one or two once of gold a week would make me happy for the reste of my life . l had my own construction compagnie for many years but the passion of doing that is now gone so as far as l’,m concern, gold is the last passion that would gave me the reason to keeping me smiling and enjoying life ... anyway just be sure that l will keep an eye on your channel , it’s so usefull
To get several thousand a week in gold, is a very difficult ask. You have only some small scale mining equipment, and the rich deposits on the surface were more than 100 years ago.
Is mossy gold or wire gold shiny or metallic?
It can be either or even metallic but with a dull sheen.
@@ChrisRalph I have been researching and watchng your videos and It looks like I have seen many photos of gold that is just very bright yellow not so much shiny. Is the only eay to test it is to smelt it? I can see both shiny and bright yellow in this one very large specimen I am crushing up. I also see silver.

Hello my friend. I live in Georgia and I’m not in the gold area but on my property are lots of boulders and rocks. By breaking the rocks inside has a vain white in color. By looking withe magnifying glass I can see gold around the white vein. Also silver color very shiny. Also I have to mention that in those rocks are lots of Mica. The gold are small hard to see it with out magnifying glass. I can provide some pictures. I really want to know if this is gold or something else.
Find someone local who can look at the rocks in person. Pictures don't really do the job. Plus I do not offer a mineral and rock ID service.

Like I said, pictures don't do what you think they will. You cannot tell what is ore, what minerals are what or things you have just from a picture. That is also why I said "Find someone local who can look at the rocks in person." I do not offer a mineral ID service, mostly because it’s not as easy as you think. Research is 90% finding gold.
Sure if you just going to the river to pan a little flood gold that's what you'll get.
Follow the old timers.
Listen to pat. He is spot on. If you are on the American your best bet is to get into the tertiary gravel! Unless you can gut punch the middle of the river you might get lucky now and then, but the amount of gold won't be great.

Gold crystal from Brazil ,I found a piece here in Nevada probably half the size of a pea ,very small piece ,in my gold pan from old mine dump ,we took it to work at a local mine and geologist looked at it and said was about 80% gold ,it’s chevron shape and has horizontal lines thru it almost like a computer board type distinct lines and has bits of red spots here and there and little black on one side which they say was silver ,anyhow I wanted to know if there was any gold ever found out there in the world like this piece ,and I found it in your video thank-you for your great video ,you’ve answered my question on my piece I found
