    Cool video. I am curious about a few improvements that you mentioned. I never tried focus stacking by the way. I thought focus stacking is good for product/macro photography done indoor. It is good for landscape too? My questions could be naive.
    Any advantage using the mechanical shutter over the electronic shutter? Electronic shutter should have no vibration at all while mechanical shutter may introduce a bit vibration especially with low shutter speed.
    Why do you prefer one shot at a time? I would think the faster the shots taken the better, right? Things could be moving.
    You wish to have longer shutter speed. I would think focus stacking should be done as quickly as possible with faster shutter speed to avoid blurred image as things keep moving in outdoor environment.
    Focus stacking is new to me. I am trying to learn from someone like you. Thanks.

      Excellent Questions Kenneth! You are Correct that focus stacking is excellent for product and Macro Photography but it can also be used effectively in Landscapes as well. Sharp Landscape images you see with a flower or similar in the foreground while also sharp in the background have been stacked or composited. Keep an eye out and you will notice how common it is in landscapes.
      "Any advantage using the mechanical shutter over the electronic shutter?" Electronic shutter is not as high quality as the mechanical shutter. It is faster but the noise can be worse as well as introduction to things like rolling shutter. My point in the video was that it would be nice to be able to choose. There as situations where one could be an advantage over the other.
      "Why do you prefer one shot at a time?" For photo stacking i wouldn't. The quicker the shots the better like you mention things could move or things can change. I would like the ability to choose one shot at a time or be able to add an intervel to be able to use focus bracketing for purposes besides focus stacking. I would love to incorporate this feature in a timelapse video. People pay a ton of money for special rigs that do what im suggesting. There are special motors people add to their lenses that will change focus slowly over a coarse of time. Also the ability to match the intervel to the timelapse intervel would make the flow of time seamless. When i tried it at the end of my video the effect was cool but the first 4 secs of the timelapse was taken over 1-2 seconds while the rest was taken over about an hour. You can see the change of time kind of like someone hit fast forward in the middle of the timelapse. Consistancy is important in timelapses.
      "You wish to have longer shutter speed" Yes depending on what you are shooting you need to adjust your shutter accordingly. Most of the time a faster shutter speed is desired but certain instances i would want a slow shutter. I do most of my shooting in very low light and a half second shutter speed is just not enough especially if im trying to keep my ISO relatively low. Consider trying to do a landscape at night with an apature of f/11 or f/13. A half second shutter speed is not going to cut it unless i went crazy on my ISO. Another example would be if im trying to capture a landscape where a slow shutter is beneficial like water. When capturing Waterfalls, Lakes, and Rivers to get a nice smooth glassy image you would want a shutter speed beyond a half second.
      I hope that all answers your questions. If not please let me know! You're questions were excellent and if i can help out in any way please let me know!

    The downside to using the mechanical shutter is the vibration it introduces which could even lead to resonance and cause very blurry images. I'll take a 12 bit sharp image over a 14 bit blurry one any day.

    Does your flash fire if you set focus bracketing from the camera menu? I have R5 and Godox v1. I can't use flash burst mode during in body focus bracketing. Multiple flash firing during a focus bracketing is really fun. In my case I myself have to move forward or backward for a stacking to use flash. What is holding me back?

    One of the best R5 videos. Thank you for sharing. I've seen people successfully use handheld focus bracketing on insects with their Olympus camera. I look forward to learning more, hopefully the R5 will be able to do this as well, perhaps with a software update (to quickly take just 5-10 shots and auto stack them).

      I think its certainly possible. While Using a real fast shutter the Electronic shutter is amazingly fast. Also the AF system is fast too. All that makes me believe its possible to handhold a focus bracketing shot. The new IBIS may help as well.

      The 3×3 gridline on the LCD and viewfinder setting is called Playback grid. For the R5 the setting is found in the "playback"/blue section of the menu on page 5. There are 3 options available, 3x3 6x4, and 3x3+diagonal (which is the one I use). hopefully that helps! 👍

    I liked this video as one of the better on this subject but I do feel you are making an error writing off the Canon DPP software that handles stacking very well without involving your favorite expensive software. You are one of few that realized that the camera stops shooting when it reaches infinity but it is certainly better to review the images before stacking and only using the ones that contribute to the desired result. I found it worthwhile to do a few tests rather than shooting everything at spacing 1 since you can shorten the time it takes to shoot the subject quite a bit and lessen the number of chances a puff of wind or moving insect has to ruin the image. In the old days when I was changing focus by hand and processing in a third party routine (CombineZ) I once had a bug jump across a flower and end up appearing in the shot twice. The electronic shutter you dislike is faster and has less vibration so I am glad Canon chose it. There would be nothing wrong with offering the option, I guess. I also believe you making it easier on yourself if you shoot with a midrange aperture and slightly coarser spacing (f/8 and spacing 3 rather than f/2.8 and spacing 1?). I suppose everyone knows that this feature is also on the R6 and RP but it would be good to mention it.

    Hi, a very good video. I want to use focus bracketing for macro. But i heard, that the high speed of 20 frames/s are only possible, if you use the max aperture of the lens (assume the selected time is 1/125 or faster). If you close the aperture only by one step the speed broke down to about 4 to 5 frames/s. Is that correct?

    • @thejpegexperience7488
      @thejpegexperience7488  3 роки тому +2

      Hi KH, I havent noticed that problem but I just did an experiment to see if that is a problem. I set my R5 and my 100mm Macro 2.8 to a shutter speed of 1/125 for all 3 tests. 1st test, apature at f/ 2.8 and focus bracketing took 100 shots in 5 seconds. 2nd Test, at f/8, 100 shots took 12 Secs. 3rd test, F/16, 100 shots took 13 seconds. Thanks for the heads up. I would not have expected change in Apature would change the speed of the electronic shutter. It is still pretty fast, way faster than if i tried to do it manually but still an interesting and unexpected result.
      Thanks KH! Hope that info helps.

    • @kh5752
      @kh5752 3 роки тому +1

      The JPEG Experience , yes it helps a lot and you are correct, it is still very fast and at the end not really a problem!!! But will be nice to know why this happens. The camera can (should) let all Parameters constant except the focus distance, for me that is the idea behind focus bracketing. Or is it necassary to open and close the shutter inbetween the pictures. And the speed of normal burst mode is hopefully also independant from apature setting, or not!? Thanks a lot for your quick answer and especially for your effort. Thanks from 🇩🇪

      @thejpegexperience7488  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching! I was using focus bracketing this weekend for some landscape shots in Zion actually.
      My best guesses are:
      1. The higher the apature the fewer shots will be taken. When I do landscapes at f/16 it only takes about 5 shots. Focus Bracketing works better around f/8 with my 15-35 in my experience.
      2. You need to focus on the closest part of the scene. The majority of shots are taken from very close and less shots are taken the further the distance is in the scene.
      Also I just want to mention that setting the number of shots is not actually the number of shots that will be taken. The camera stops when focus is at infinity. The number of shots section is kind of useless IMO and i keep the number around 100 and forget about it. The camera will stop at infinity anyways.
      Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any questions

      @@thejpegexperience7488 Hi. I make some shots today. To have the focus stacking working, I should put f4 or f6.3, with the original lens RF24-105. It was on a view of the Hong Kong Island. Results ok but I think I get a better results with one shots with f22 or f16. It will depend the case. Eventually with a lower light and to use a smaller aperture it can help. Another topic which I just discover is the panorama shots. With my 5D MKIV, I was able to realise really amazing panorama. I setup my system for the R5 but I don't get any good results as with the 5D. I get "bending" panorama... and this effect I don't have it with the 5D. I will continue to work on it.

      Thats an interesting question Darshan. Just out of couriosity i threw my Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 II on the R5 and tried it out in my Living room. The Feature does work on the 100-400. I think it could be used for some interesting shots. The lens has a huge throw and this could complicate things. When i tried it out @ 400mm f/5.6 it took a total of 763 shots at the Minimum focus to infinity at the "Narrow" setting. At a more realistic landscape setting of F/13 at the "widest" setting it took about 50 shots from Minimum focus to Infinity. If i get a chance to do this on a real landscape ill let you know how it turned out.

      Thanks for the prompt response , this feature on R5 is interesting & am trying to use focus stacking with my existing lenses, 11-24mm , 24-105mm, f4, 100-400ii. 11-24 is a very sharp lens & use it for landscape & architectural photography. Would this technique enhance the images ?

    • @thejpegexperience7488
      @thejpegexperience7488  3 роки тому +2

      @@darshanmehta9695 You're Welcome Darshan.
      I have not personally used the 11-24 but am aware of its reputation of being a good sharp lens. The technique of focus stacking wont neccessarily make your images sharper unless you are currently using a very high apature like f/22. If you are taking an image of a landscape to get as much DOF as possible at say F/22 regarldess of the lens quality you will suffer from defraction and softness in the image. That extra depth of field at above f/16 or so comes at a cost of image quality. The perk of focus stacking is getting 100% depth of field at say an apature of f/11 or which is around the sweet spot for Image quality in alot of lenses. So the result of the extra effort of Focus Stacking is a fully sharp image at the highest Image quality.
      Hope that all makes sense.

As we have to input the no of shots in camera , how to ascertain the right figure? If a higher no of shots is chosen does camera automatically stop before the that limit if it reaches infinity ? Similarly if lesser shots chosen does it stop before reaching infinity ? Or there will be larger gaps between focus points. A new technique for me so lots of queries
