I am not a fan of the 'look' from the twin macro flashes when adjusted right and left but would like to see more with one placed on top and possibly with larger diffusers than those tiny things supplied by the manufacturer. I'm currently using a homemade diffuser on a standard single flash which get redesigned every time I go out. What I would really like is a flash that could keep up with a small number of manually focus stacked shots allowing you to lean toward the subject as it records 4-6 images at high frame rate but not focusing between shots. My old flash is only good for two shots fast enough for this and the R7 at 15fps mechanical is quite capable of manual stacking. I also would enjoy seeing your opinions on the differences between using a few input images shot at f/8 compared to more and more closely spaced images at a wider aperture. Finally, I am torn between my old Canon EF 100mm macro and my recently purchased 85mm Laowa 2:1 macro. The Laowa is sharper but manual focus only and loses the colored focus peaking when stopped down beyond f/11. Your videos are well done but bring up as many new questions as they answer. That, actually, is a complement.

That focus stacking in camera is awesome! Always envied the Olympus owners and their fabulous depth of field for macro, but the r7 can do the same🙂

Great review, thank you (Justin - if I got your name right?). Credit to your girlfriend for such a beautiful garden. The Godox flash looks great. Since the flash does not work for focus stacking or high fps, Manfrotto constant lights could work, perhaps attached to a tripod on one or more sides, or one on top of the camera and one on a tripod off to one side. I should be getting the R7 and the RF 100mm macro tomorrow, and this video is really inspiring and helpful to get me started. Thanks again. David Clode, Cairns, Australia. Sept. 21 2022.

Really useful video for me. I'm mostly shooting macro and have the Canon R8. I think I might have done better to get the R7, for the reasons you describe.

NIce! I am going into the R7 myself. Sensor size and depth of focus is complicated, but the sensor size in itself does not change depth of focus. But you will get a greater depth of focus effect from a crop sensor IF you compose for the same scene that was given by a full frame. That is, if you use a shorter focal length (wider angle) lens to give the same scene as the full frame, then there is a slightly greater dof. Also if you use the same focal length, but merely pull back a bit to get a wider angle, that too gives slightly greater dof.

Well presented. Great shots. You should do another piece about how you landed on using the particular flash equipment you're using. Also, are you ever using tripod for macro? If so, what sort of situations are you finding that advantageous.

Hello mate thank you for the great review. Do you think I will be able to do Marathons and running people pictures with eletronic shutter without getting rolling shutter with the R7? thank you

Hi, I've just changed from the Eos 7D mk2 using Ring flash totally perfect exposures TTL which does not work with my R7. Can I take it the Godox MF12 works TTL Auto exposures? BTW love the video

Great. I am doing a lot of macro on flowers, insects etc. and your review convinced to go for R7 from my current Canon 80D. I like the possibility of focus stacking. And for flowers I can use a tripod when doing focus stacking, if there is no wind that give movements in the flowers. I wonder if the finished focus stacked image will be jpg or raw format?

How does the flash work when using the focus bracketing/stacking? Does it just fire once?

Nice review. I really like the ability to crop with the R7. And the focus stacking is awesome!

Nice to see a review of a couple of Canon R Series cameras looking at their use as cameras for macro. (There are a million reviews by birders.) But many issues are different between the two types of shooting, and you point them out, at least as far as handheld macro goes. Macro photographers shooting handheld care less about the placement of buttons and wheels (I think) and are much more concerned with depth of field, resolution, and flash.

I have the R7 and was experimenting with focus stacking, it's a shame it won't work with flash. I would have thought that my Godox V1 could keep up with HSS or with lowering the shutter speed. So I guess it's one or the other?

Nice review. Now with the release of R6 mark 2, having focus bracketing and in-body focus stacking... which one will you prefer for macro and wildlife? R6 2 or the R7.

Great video. Will the focus stacking in camera only work with AF?
