Ephraim’s location and who they are as a people change so much throughout the Bible. It wasn’t until I did a year long read of the Bible in Chronological order (took me a little longer) that I finally was able to kind of wrap my head around Ephraim as one of the 12 Tribes, as assimilating and somewhat taking over and in place of Israel in the Northern Kingdom and then for them to somehow no longer be that Northern Kingdom at a certain point and fall back into just one of the tribes in which they originated.
It’s a very unique situation in the Bible and even in history. I don’t know any other tribe, nation , country etc… that experienced a transition like theirs.
