I think the way you take care of your animals is why they are in such good condition, your barns and milking parlor are the cleanest I’ve ever seen! All the preventative things you do like the copper sulfate just makes you one of the best dairymen on this planet along with Eric from 10thgenerationdairy keep up the great work you do so others can see how things should be done. I hope and pray the dairy products I consume comes from a dairy like yours! When I find a good Jersey cow I hope to produce all my own dairy products.
michael I can guarantee dairy products here in Canada all come from great farms, and of high quality. My farm in Manitoba has always been in the top 30 farms with the highest quality in Manitoba, we have been under top 10 and won second place, 6th place and 9th place all in 3 years for a quality award. We have pro-action guide lines in place we have to follow. Not sure about the USA and how they work down there but i will assume there fairly similar. Clean cows are happy cows.
Clean, padded and well taken care and respect of animals and facility. Gotta appreciate that quality of care for making happy cows and a good product. Thank you!
This is THE CLEANEST BARN AND DAIRY OPERATION that I've ever seen. I'm spreading this video around in the Hope's that every farmer follows in your path. Great job. I've subscribed, I want to see positive outcome and operations like yours.
This was very interesting and chock full of great information. Every time I thought of a question while watching, you would proceed to answer it for me. Great. You are a superb communicator Jan.
Man it seems like you all have a great operation. I watch the majority of your videos and am always impressed with your operation. Keep up the good work!
Things I like about your foot bath procedure. 1. It’s simple, easy to fill, and maintain. 2. The rubber bottom provides excellent traction and improves their confidence to walk through it. 3. You put enough copper in. 4. You have enough length to the foot bath. 5. The most important one of all. You actually use your foot bath. There is no replacement for running it consistently. Your ease of use is probably a big part of this. Pro tip- if you add an acidifier half way through when you refill, that will help tremendously. Sodium bisulfate works well for that. Well done. As always I love your videos! Keep up the good work! 😃🐮
Happy Feet Hoof Care could I ask you a q? I’ll try anyway in case you see this and have time to reply. I’m in the Uk and we have a few hundred sheep. They do suffer with digital dermatitis (CODD) so question is, copper in the foot bath or formalin?
Ben Pattinson I would use copper myself, simply for the health implications. Formalin has a very long half life. I think it is still 50% as strong 40 years after the use and can get in your ground water. Also it is known to cause cancer at high rates. That being said formalin works very well on hairy warts. Probably even better than copper but ultimately that is what I would think about when deciding. Hope that helps! 😃
You have great videos. They are really interesting to watch. I can spend hours watching them. Even if I have already seen them. I was a hired hand on a farm for 45 years. It was just the farm owner and myself, but even though we both worked on the farm, we both worked other jobs too. Part of the time, I was in school because I was only 12 years old. We only worked 750 acres but it really took a long time especially in the spring and fall. The man I worked for stopped milking before I started working for him. We then just had a grain, cattle and pig farm. The man I worked for past away 12 years ago and I no longer farm. I really miss it. If you ever decide you wanted to do something else, make sure it is something you really want to do. Like I said, I really really really miss the farm. Do you let people come and visit? How many acres do you farm? If you don’t mind me asking, what did your new home farm and equipment cost it build and how much does it now cost to run? Bob Shoemaker Canton, Ohio USA
I normally don't like big farms, because the animal wellbeing mostly suffers from it. Seeing this made me happy, there are farmers who really care about the animals like you!
From western Canada here, and just want to thank you for not only doing these videos, but also for showing how much hard work goes into operating a dairy ranch! Way to go kid! You should do a video on the difference between a healthy dairy cow and not so healthy. By the way you guys care for your cows, this may be somewhat of a challenge for you.
Love seeing this kind of good animal husbandry. I personally implement a new product that eliminates the need for copper sulfate, formaldehyde, antibiotics, and other forms of acid treatments which aren't effective enough to eliminated the hairy-wart in the barn of 500 ore more dairy cows. This product can be used daily in an automated foot bath over 15 days without harm to the hoof. This new test product has eliminated copper sulfate in manures and ultimately in field application spreading. Finally a product with a win win solution. Keep up the good work SaskDutch kid
Liking your vids is easy. You explain very well and I love the cleanliness of your parlors and barns etc. You also seem to keep great records of vaccines and meds etc. Wishing you all the best. My dads dad (my Grandpa) was kicked in the chest by a horse and killed in1919 in Saskatoon. I'm 70yo
"Back in the old days, ..." Yeah, 64 years ago on the dairy, we washed the cows in the milking parlor. They came in and went into the head locks, then we took a hose and washed each cow before milking. They got covered in manure from laying out in the paddocks. We didn't have these new type of automatic milking machines. We had milkers (Delavel) but the fit on top of special milking buckets, then we had to strip by hand. I remember wearing a one-legged milking stool and having to use kick chains on some cows. Guess it shows my age. The dairy was just 2 miles north of Los Angeles International Airport on land that is now Marina Del Rey. Jon
This was a good information pacted video. This is something I did not know about. I live in southern Indiana and hoof care is something I don't think about until you said something.
3:08 the reason why this stuff works so good is because copper itself is toxic, exact mechanism is still under research, in simple terms it will react with proteins, and replace iron atoms in some cases in them, making them useless. being "inorganic" has nothing to do with this, in fact, most treated wood is treated with copper bonded to an organic compound, and it is still great at keeping away microbes This is also the reason why using copper door handles and what not is popular, microbes have a hard time getting established there LOve your vids btw!
Conversation I witnessed between your ladies-. “Sandi”: awww this warm water bath feels so good on my tootsies! “Cheri”: nudging her, Com’on Sandi it’s my turn “Kristin”: nipping at her tail- Cheri mooooove, you’ve stepped in it, it’s my turn And each of your ladies encourage the other to walk through the tootsie sauna.
It makes good sense to be proactive with dermatitis rather than having an inexperienced hoof trimmer hacking away at the ladies feet. You have a lovely farm proudly Canadian 🇨🇦.
Another excellent video. Make sure everybody hits the thumbs up. Dairy Farmers have a rough job especially over the winter time support him however we can.
Thank you for covering the foot bath! I have seen them referred to but did not know what was in them besides water and the process of how oftenthey are used, etc. So is the copper sulfate solution 100% successful at keeping digital dermatitis from manifesting in any of the herd?
I hope you take equally good care of yourselves and (please) wear a mask when all that copper sulfate dust is flying around... not too good for the mucus membranes and alveoli...
Hey you could also use that foot bath with the copper sulfate to treat homemade fence post like the old timers. Not too many poplar blue stone fence post around anymore but some of them lasted 60+ years.
I love when you post, post more when you can pls your farm is beautiful and I love how you know everything there is to know about your farm and your girls. And your nice to look at😉
Not gunna lie I appreciate that you call it manure now instead of shit or crap like your earlier videos. I cuss like a sailor myself. But it gives you a more professional vibe
I think you secretly love all your cows . And they have a foot spa as well as a back scratcher. Do you ever get kicked when you r doing the milking ? Still my favourite vids on UA-cam.
I'm curious what the purpose is of the guide, for lack of a better word, you place the hose into after applying the milker? I realize it's probably from 25 years of progress I don't know much about. I was a dairy farm kid; dad sold the herd in 96. We milked in a stanchion barn that we later converted to all tie-stall. I knew of parlors but herringbone was by far the most common kind at the time.
I can see that dairy farming in an operation like this one is pretty water intensive. Has to be to keep the barns as clean as this. Is there way to recycle all that water or is it just pumped out to fields or elsewhere to get rid of it?
It was kinda funny at the start of the video one of the cows was using the brush and another one walked up and just took it away from the one that was already using it. I love seeing good healthy clean cows. Have you noticed it getting any warmer there yet? Thanks for the video.
This is no doubt a great farm and they take very care, however, their are many what I call factory farms especially in the MidWest of the US that have thousands of cows and many of these factory farms are extremely disgusting, so it goes both ways, factory farms is where mass production of meats are sold to very large conglomerates in the meat industry such as Tyler, Oscar Meyers and such.
I learn something new every video. Thanks for sharing. Question, could you tell us about how much milk you get a day? I know it varies, but just a estimate. Thanks
Great video dude im not into cown and stuff..but planing to own a small barn when im done from my military service thanks a lot for the information i appreciate it 👍👍
I like the way you say "minerr. Each time I watch one of your videos, I learn more and more about taking proper care of your cows(ladies). You are an amazing young man. Many of the cows seem to sniff the foot bath water to see if it is something tasty to drink. Would it hurt them if they did drink it? Thanks for the new lesson. By the way, i was not making fun of the way you talk with my minerr comment.
DC8FD I don't think they wash them, if some cows are dirty it can be because they lay where there's dirty stuff and cows produce a looot of dirty stuff aka manure. If the beds are not comfortable enough (it can be for a myriad of reasons, beds are not an appropriate size, the bedding is uncomfortable and lots i don't know) the cows may lay in the paths. A cow might poop when another one is close and that other cow gets "painted". And they have brushes, it brushes the dirt off if there is any on the cow where the brush can reach.
It is amazing to learn the things you all do to make your farm successful. I look forward to each new video. Thank you for sharing! I noticed "the Ladies" pause and sniff before stepping into the solution. Are they ever tempted to taste / drink from it?
Good job on the video again! You should be very proud of your operation. Top class! I hope you do get something out of posting these (no ads?) because we enjoy watching them.
I could be wrong but I think that brownish coloured film that shows up in the foot bath is copper falling out of solution, because of the metal that the basin is made of

michbostn more then likely it is processed and sold by Dairyland. But that is just a guess based on his farms location of central Saskatchewan.
@@chadnaumetz2189 then let's ask them to sponsor him?

Does the solution go in the manure when you’re done
if so does it hurt the soil any I’m not very familiar with dairy cows
