Really wish I’d played against you with a deck that a) I knew how to play better (I was really unsure of what I was supposed to be doing that entire game) and b) actually had a win condition. I was looking for Brain Freeze the entire draft and never found it, which was pretty unfortunate. Ended up with a pile of cards that did a lot of wheel spinning and not a lot of actual action. Easily the worst deck I’ve ever drafted. Hope to play against you under some different circumstances next time haha.

That's the key to this draft. So much bling bling distracting you from forming an effective deck. To be fair Caleb has a lot of experience building over the top cube decks so I feel like he has an (honest & earned) advantage over most players.
I did actually win my last match with that deck which was hilarious- my opponent scooped to Narset Timetwister game 1 and then ran out a Mentor in game 2 which I copied and proceeded to make all the Monks with all of my Moxes. Somehow avoided 0-3.
Ln the same way that a smart parody can better encapsulate something than the source material. Like when Weird Al parodied DEVO with “Dare to be Stupid.”
it has the sword going into the plow but it doesn't make sense because the person with the plow is still an aggressive warrior, just now with a crappy weapon. it's too on-the-nose but also misses the point of the card, which is non-violence.

i think he means it doesn't make sense in an artistic sense. swords and plowshares are metonymies for soldier and farmer or war and peace. an art that really captures the meaning of the card should focus on the general meanings of war and peace or soldier and farmer, this card just shows a sword changing into a plow. you COULD imagine that the person sees the plow in his hand, is confused, and then has an epiphany and decides war is evil and he wants to be a farmer, but the art doesn't really get there IMO
it just looks cool. typical of most of the new magic art, appeals to people who prefer things to look cool rather than be meaningful or moving or beautiful
They were on reanimator, and probably didn't draft much discard, so needed to discard naturally on the first turn. They showed putrid imp, but that might have been literally all they had. If that was the situation, it wasn't actually a bad plan. Being on the draw maybe a bad idea, but so is mulliganing to putrid imp.
At 31:42, could someone explain why he mulled? Wouldn’t it make sense to turn 1 breeding pool into sol ring into skull clamp, then turn 2 time twister?
FYI flux doesn't effect recording software in most circumstances using game/window recording, it will typically only show up on monitor capture or through capture cards to secondary stream/recording computer.
It'd actually die during cleanup on that turn (leading to a second cleanup step after the ability resolves). EDIT: But, yes, clamping it would definitely work even if it's slightly delayed.

Watching THAT game reminds me how I felt when I first found out about vintage. I was watching the Vintage superleague games and every time a matchup between two piles of blue restricted cards would go to the point where both players have enough mana to hard cast force/misdirection/trap, then they would just trade 1-for-1, while one of the players has an orchard token or a snapcaster in play and the other deck couldn't remove a 1 tougness creature form the board so it would die from a 6-10 turn clock... At the time I was very new to MTG and only playing standard, so I was really confused why they are not playing supreme verdict in their control decks.
Drawing first playing reanimator was fringe(and bad) tech like 20 years ago with tempest block and Urza's block. I remember it clearly- turn 1 discard Verdant Force(or Thorn Elemental/crater) for turn. Oh, the days. Remember the card Victimize?
We finally see a reanimator deck for Iona on blue! You are naturally vulnerable to force still, but you can go U/B reanimator and have force backup as well.
I appreciate you not complaining about Narset. I hear how dumb she is so much and it’s really nice having you just accept it and move on with the game. :)
A card I've not really seen anyone consider but have found really strong is Geist of St Traft, playing it turn 1 or 2 is a really fast clock and most decks I've played don't really run early creatures that can block it or sac/wraths. Also Glen Elendra is top 15 in this format imo after the power 9, sol ring, mana crypt and FoW
Caleb do u do Constructed Vintage? I know it doesn't have the audience that cube does but you are definitely the player I want to watch when playing the format.
47:00 you should have played narset timetwister because you both would have had no hand and you had a better board state especially when you fateseal them every turn
Gotta say, you make this look so easy.... i played 8 drafts today and got wrecked EACH time. I won like 7 games altogether and never 2/3d, always 0/3 or 1/0.... man.... gonna reflect and try again tomorrow morning.
You need to start getting scavenging ooze when you play green especially with timetwister/spiral. Eat their good stuff you dont want them to get back, puts them on a clock, and is great against reanimator
Krark doesn't *sometimes* double spells. He *always* doubles spells. Sometimes he wastes mana, but you always get card advantage out of it. Very good with cheap cards like Lightning Bolt, which becomes 6 damage in 1 card, for example. Or any of the 1-mana blue cantrips.
@@claytonnewlon3747 Yes, but you didn't spend a card in that situation. Only mana. If you have a Lightning Bolt in hand and enough red mana, you will eventually get to cast double Lightning Bolt. On average you will spend RR, which is exactly as much as you would spend on 2x Lightning Bolt. It's super random which is annoying, not all spells can be duplicated for full value, and it's mana hungry. So I don't think he's a bomb or anything. He's just an interesting form of red card advantage.
Hey caleb love the content. If you ever get tired of drafting op blue i believe there is actually a better deck in this format. Try forcing red. With all the moxen running around red is absurdly op in this format. Especially since everyone is durdly blue and runs little to no removal. I find that a strong mono red core with a couple light splashes make the decks real good.
This is the first vintage cube that I haven't participated in. Every deck by everyone looks the same. Stuff your deck with power and as many Narset/Hullbreacher as possible. Anyone who doesn't gets steamrolled.
It hurt so bad when he took the spell seeker instead of the Time Warp on pack 17. I guess this is how inexperienced players feel when they dont understand Caleb's choices.
Vintage Cube Supreme draft is kinda broken. In normal cube colors are balanced by the fact that people pick certain colors more but in Supreme I feel like there is no reason to play mono-white. In my first league I had 2 timewalks, 1 regrowth, 2 spellseekers, 2 sol rings, and 2 jaces.
turns out Jace, the Mind Sculptor is a pretty good magic card I know a lot of the time he ends up being a 4-mana brainstorm, but that +2 is still one of the most busted ever
Once again posting before the matches, and once again skipping the draft because of the title. We're 8 for 8 on having islands in the deck, though 2 decks last time were just splashing for time walk and time walk plus sphinx. Let's see if we can go 12 for 12. Editing after seeing the matches, and 36:12 pretty much sums up everything. "They are basically my deck." If you have the opportunity to play Time Walk, Timetwister, Ancestral, Narset, Time Spiral, Memory Jar, both Forces, etc over any of the other options, you basically will pick this every time. You can even see little to nothing towards it in the first couple of packs, but 15 first and second picks towards this deck will get there more often than not. If there is a 100% best deck in the format, the format needs a change. One final note, a draft format shouldn't come down to, hope to pull one of the forces, mulligan to a force, and hope it's enough.
I might be totally wrong here, but in the final match couldn't you have used Spellseeker to search out Green Sun Zenith and then used Green Sun Zenith to play Acidic Slime? It also would have resulted in 9 toughness worth of untapped creatures. It might not be a winning play but it could have bought a turn or two. Minus some of the newer cards this format really feels like kitchen table magic in 2009, or at least with the groups I was playing with at the time.
