- here's my stop motion animated movies ranking! i've been working very hard on this for around 6 months and i'm glad i can finally release it. from 1926 to 2022, i found 35 movies from 16 countries including the nightmare before christmas, fantastic mr. fox, guillermo del toro's pinocchio, coraline, and many, many more and ranked them all from worst to best. well, "worst." from studios like laika and aardman to directors like tim burton, henry selick, and wes anderson. if you enjoyed this video, please comment, like, subscribe, + join my patreon to support my channel and for more videos on animated films!

looking back on this video a year later i've realized just how many movies i have left out due to my "they have to be on a streaming service" rule. it's kind of unfair to do that since there are so many from overseas that have yet to receive a proper release in the states and i want to help shed light on them, like i did for the miracle maker, a town called panic, and the tower. however, i was laid off from my old job while i made this video so i couldn't exactly go crazy and rent/buy a bunch of movies. but it was also because i thought 35 was a good enough number to get the ones people would actually "care about." i've been thinking about it for months and i plan to do an updated version of this ranking later down the line that will include many more movies from overseas, including bringing down the runtime threshold from 60 minutes to 40, which according to the oscars is what counts as feature length. i'm not going to make it anytime soon since watching the movies to uploading the video took *6 months* with school and such and i want to wait when i'm a bit older to see if my taste has changed on any of them. also laika has 2 upcoming movies and wildwood is coming out in 2025 so i at least want to wait for that. in the meantime, if there was a movie you wished made an appearance, let me know so i can keep an eye out for it and add it to my list!

Honestly the movie that made me love Stop-Motion was Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas and also probably one of the best Stop-Motion film of all time. At least that’s how I see it.
I would also put Nightmare at #1 for its brilliant animation but also for its unforgettable soundtrack.

When I watch a movie at home, the popcorn is usually gone within the first twenty minutes because I sometimes have a hard time paying attention to the movie. When I watched Kubo and the Two Strings for the first time, the popcorn bowl was about 3/4 full by the end because I was so spellbound by the film that I couldn't do anything else. I was thrilled to see it at the top of your list, and while I haven't seen all the films on this list (yet!), I'm sure it would be at the top of mine too! I will never pass up a chance to recommend it to people as it is just criminally underrated, and it's always nice to see it being given the love it deserves. This was a great video and now I have a long list of cool stop motion movies to watch! (Also you really should watch Arthur Christmas; it's a really well-written movie and a seasonal favorite of mine.)

@@livmendel, it's a parody show of news channels and television with muppet-like characters, some episodes I'd encourage anyone to watch if they're interested would be the Christmas special, "31 minutos educativio" and "qué lástima" all episodes are available for free on YT with eng. subs and everything, the writting on the show is top notch with excellent humour and satyre.
I'm Peruvian and that Spanish segment got me flabbergasted cuz that pronunciation was spot on! Great video as well!

Awesome video. I cut my teeth on the Davy and goliath tv show, but my favorite pick would have to be the original Clash of Titians. Yes it was a live action movie but so much of it was stop motion, I think it qualifies.

As awkward as that scene was to witness for you in Anomalisa, at least you didn’t see that in a theater where the row in front of you was a family that probably thought this was a kids movie because it was animated (yes, this is true story of what happened when I saw it a second time….)

@@livmendel they didn’t leave, but I remember distinctly during that scene, the kids who were with the parents put a blanket over their heads during that part so they won’t see. Though one would wonder why parents would take their kids to that movie cause as someone who loves Anomalisa, If I saw it as a kid, I’d probably be bored by it.

Really interesting video and loved seeing some from Czechoslovakia. About that I think you'd find Pat & Mat interesting. If you search it up you'll most likely see the show but they also have a film. There's also no talking which means that pretty much anyone can follow the story🙂

With regard to GDT's Pinocchio and the Oscars, I was most disappointed that it was shut out of a well-deserved Best Adapted Screenplay nomination. Marcel the Shell would also have deserved such a nom. But the Academy seems determined these days to keep animated films locked out of every category except Best Animated Feature -- as if animated films are not, quite frequently, the best films of the years they're released.

I wouldn't put Kubo at the top of my list, but it is indeed a beautiful film whose box-office failure breaks my heart to this day. Why were moviegoers flooding the theater to see Suicide Squad when THIS was out there? I'll never understand it.
Thank you for your rankings. I truly appreciate stop motion more than traditional 2-d/3-d animation, but I honestly skipped to the films I loved till this day. However I saw Chicken Run in the introduction of the video, but I didn't see it in the ranking. Did I miss it? I truly love this film's quirky character designs and the overall message: always strive for freedom (a better life) and don't become complacent.
However I agree that Kubo is a beautiful film! Do you think the voice actors should be the same race/nationality of the character? I guess this is one way to respect the culture. It's a topic I never thought about since I care more about the performance. For example Avatar Last Airbender has a diverse cast, and I loved each actor's performance in this show. I wouldn't want to replace anyone.
hi! chicken run is #13 :) and i did touch on it, but i do believe kubo should have had more japanese voice actors. i know there’s that argument “it’s just a voice, you can’t see their face,” i kinda believed it too at one point, but it would’ve made the movie more authentic. i mean japan has *schools* for voice acting, they take it so much more seriously than here where major studios just pay celebrities. besides, there’s bound to be many asian americans VAs looking for a job. if i had to see it from laika’s point of view, yeah, it probably would’ve been harder to see them out, but it would’ve been cheaper in the long run. i just think representation is important, whether it’s on or off screen, in front or behind the camera!

That's very true. Why not hire very talented voice actors who are not as well known...they save money that way. I remember your stance on how celebrities are turning the VA business upside down. Also when there are panels and fan events, it would be nice to see the culture represented behind the scenes too.

And I recommend you to watch "Toys in the attic" 2009. Maybe it's a most creative stop-motion animation that I've ever seen.

Havent seen a lot of these movies but i really need to.
As for fantastic mr fox, i watched it a few days ago, i didnt mind the first half, but after the scene of the toast, it got a bit too wacky and random for me, especially with the dancing while they steal everything. It dragged on really long
The film Mary and Max made me really start watching stop motion animation and is still my all time favourite to this day
Will watch anything stop-motion Laika produce and will be buying tickets for Wildwood in 2025 and The Night Gardener. My personnel favourite is also Kubo followed by Coraline

Another stop motion movie is ‘The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb’ it’s like a more tame version of Mad God, but with sympathetic characters.
It also uses a unique animation technique were real humans are animated like stop motion puppets.

i saw it last month, i was the only one in the auditorium cause i saw on a monday just after noon 🥴 i’d personally put it at #22 in between the house and corpse bride
Labeling the chapters instead of numbering them would have been very helpful. I understand you want people to watch all the way through but even in the description you have it numbered and it shows viewership is more important than the viewers who are watching.

17:13 it's really disappointing to see how many years he spent trying to get *Shadow King* off the ground with Disney. I think that company doesn't have the patience for Stop Motion especially given their Internal power stuggles (& Stop Motion not being Box Office catnip to begin with)

I’m sure there’s some reason why a movie about Mark Twain features a scene where Satan creates and destroys life in front of some little children… but I think it works better without context

My favorite art form. Just trying to learn more about it. I watched coroline with my then future wife about 309 times. 99 percent of the time we were eating farm fresh mushrooms from Al we were living like hippies in the woods and coroline is it Caroline. Slipped the matrix sorry

yep, it was originally going to be in stop motion, it being an aardman production and all, but since the setting revolves so much around water and you can’t control it frame by frame, they decided to have it computer animated instead

Alot of your criticisms for these movies are very bad and unconstructive.
I get its more your personal taste but im thinking you're just illequipped to understand alot of the symbolism, plot points and subtext in these movies
Its just very surface level critiques for someone that eagerly wants to portay themselves as a movie critic
I really didn't like Mad God and no not because it was "too dark". Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal were amazing. I hated the movie because the story was lame and there was no artistic integration for the gore and blood. I get it took 30 years but Food Fight took over 10 and look how that turned out. Nobody has the nerve to talk good about Food Fight yet Mad God gets a pass because it has "good symbolism"?
What about hell and back i know this movie was shit but it was stop motion

When you put "Fantastic Planet" on the last list, which is first isn't even a stop-motion, second you said you won't include South Park because it's a paper cut out animation, yet you said Fantastic planet is also the same, which makes your review very inconsistent and a flop.
and third you don't understand the story i guess lol, that's a top tier, you have bad taste or don't know how to give a review. Lol
