    i've been at LAIKA since 2006. The last year of my film degree (digital media production) I took a two semester class from Vinton at AiPD where we made "the martial artist". Will said he was relieved to get that weight off of his shoulders even if it stung. Most of the old folks are gone but I love seeing them. ParaNorman is our best! They left me off the credits because I was at House, which, if you ever talk about Mark Gustafson. . .anyway, mentions of all the DP's should be made. John Ashlee and his history with Vinton. .. .privileged to work there. We've had to convert 2 more warehouses to accommodate Wildwood. Time will tell. Great analysis, thanks.

    This studio is the kind of thing I would spend so much money on if I had it. Kubo and the two strings was the movie that made me fall in love with Laika. It was so stunning and so unique and so HEARTBREAKING I have never forgotten it

    I really don't understand why kubo did so badly. As far as I remember, it was heavily advertised, even on youtube, and if I were a kid and had seen that trailer, I would have annoyed my parents to death to go and see that movie in theaters. It just doesn't make any sense to the point where I want to say box office numbers are rigged somehow.

      RIGHT!!! I saw tonnes of ads for this in the day. My only thought is that people were just turned away from the film based on how mature the film appeared to be.

    There was an exhibit dedicated to Laika here in Portland at the Portland Art Museum. That giant skeleton was at the very entrance of the exhibit. It was really incredible and almost hard to believe that it was used to animate in the actual film.

    Being trans, cross-dressing, and drag are all very different things. There's nothing homophobic about a character dressing up as the opposite sex. It's only an issue when that person directly states that they're trans while being the but of the joke. The boxtroll character was cross-dressing, plain as day.

    I've never heard of any Americans that really clicked with Boxtrolls, it's a very British movie. You have to have grown up with that kind of classism and racism to see just how well Lakia skewered it, the British sense of humour delights in playing with how truly ugly society is where as American humour shys away from that. For example: Mr Gristle looks like every cartoonists impression of former Prime minister John Howard, who just prior to an election demonising refugees as "que jumpers" and claiming they where sooo evil they would throw their children overboard to drown.... who in a red hat does that remind you of?

    Great Job. Most discussion around the films of Laika dont know about the first film being "The Corpse Bride" or the Will Vinton part of the equation. Thank you for a well researched video essay. I worked there before and during the transition. Will Vinton Studios was a very special place and it's heart and soul is still there in Laika. I think its very much the north west Oregon point of view. I hope they have more succuess because Travis took the company forward and didnt set it on the sane generic american animation path.

    We watched Kubo together with our 7 yr-old daughter on Blu-ray and while she seemed to enjoy the films (has seen all preceding LAIKA films), the scenes with the Moon sister where a bit intense for her. While she didn't look away, she did force her way into my lap to be held. Those sisters are super creepy! Moreso than anthing else LAIKA has done apparently.

    I dunno, the fact that no one apologized to Norman for how they treated him, save his sister, never sat well with me. Especially his father, he was just mean-spirited. And awkwardly saying hi to his own deceased mother is not the same as saying "I am sorry, I was wrong to treat you the way I did." I liked that the spirits of the Puritans didn't ask for forgiveness, nor, as you pointed out, did Norman tell Agatha she should forgive them, but still, genuine apologies matter and should be said more often.
    I will say that I have watched this movie more than once, and I become more forgiving of that (I recognize it's a nitpick) and do enjoy the movie a bit more each time too.

    This video is amazing!!!! I haven't watched some of these, but i hope to be able to do so eventually. The first memory I have of watching a movie in theaters is Paranorman, we arrived late, and we entered around the halfway point. As a like, 3 year old i thought it was super fucking cool, at least what i remember. Otherwise, I remember wanting to watch Kubo in theaters, but it rained. I remember sobbing and cheering once i watched it on Netflix. I watched Missing Link on Hulu back when it was on there, and I remember liking it enough.
    Back to the video, this video makes me excited for future endeavors, and has definitely joined my list of 'overly long videos to watch when bored and in a funk to cheer me up' (this is a high achievement may i add)
    Thanks Film Freak!!!!

    I feel a problem with stop motion in general is that they don't look super interesting to most kids as the style I feel isn't appealing to most children compared to other animated films plus there distributors are awful with Lionsgate doing the last 2 theatrical Aardman Movies Shaun The Sheep Movie and Early Man and Annapurna For Missing Link having always struggled to put out successful films and both Distributors I just mentioned barely gave any of the aforementioned films marketing
    I try to support stop motion as much as possible and saw stuff like The Boxtrolls Shaun The Sheep Movie Early Man In Theaters and even saw Missing Link twice in theaters and is a shames because the visuals on Laika and Aardman are Incredible
    I'm from the US and I can confirmed there is an audio commentary on the Missing Link Blu-ray and if you love listening to audio commentaries like I do and can get your hands on it I recommend it

    Okay, no, this is severely off-topic, but. I can get behind the valid criticisms of Boxtrolls and how the focus on comedy kind of messed with the themes a bit, but I will defend Chicken Little no matter what. Buck Cluck's whole arc was about growing as a person, recognising how hurt his son was, sincerely apologising, and taking steps to be a better Father. It's not the deepest or best handling of that kind of disfunctional family, but it's not worth the amount of DISHONEST SLANDER it gets.
    Rant aside, specifically the drag part was definitely without harmful intent, but it feels to me like a lot of these harmless jokes (man realises he's into a man dressed as a woman, hyper-masculine individual presenting themself in a hyper-feminine way) have some unfortunate implications because of their roots, and those implications tend to be taken at face value by the exact people the movie's calling out. So I think it would be best if more writers, designers, performers, and general crew behind any media were a bit more wary of those jokes and their roots. But also, Snatcher absolutely slayed that look, so it gets a pass from me.

    • @filmfreak1994
      @filmfreak1994  2 роки тому

      Lol, I've never seen someone so adamantly defend Buck Cluck before.
      I get that the point of his whole arc is that he's supposed to become more understanding of his son and accept him despite all his oddities, but my biggest gripe when I rewatched a bit of it recently is that most of the reason behind his awkwardness around Chicken Little is largely based on his own self image, which I guess you can argue is valid cuz he was the town's star athlete but that part of his past is largely brushed aside once the whole baseball subplot is over. It just left a sour taste in my mouth how selfish he came across, like they made him a little *too* jerky without any redeeming qualities beside starting to warm up to his son once he'd proven himself.
      But to each their own. Might even be worth doing a video about someday cuz "Chicken Little" as a movie is fairly fascinating for what it was and when it was made.

    • @imthecoolestguyalive
      @imthecoolestguyalive 2 роки тому +1

      @@filmfreak1994 Upon my most recent rewatch, he came across as being a lot more concerned with just his son's well-being because of all the bullying, his self-image not really coming up? To be fair, I did only watch the Russian dub, so maybe the tiniest dialogue or performance changes made me perceive the character a bit more differently. Also probably because it's one of my personal favourites. But, hey, I don't really see people talking much about that movie, or its production outside of "chicken cartoon bad disney corporate", so I'm all for hearing another perspective in any format. I'll still stand by my man (my hen??) though.

And the script was written by Caroline Thomspon (and she also tried to remove the racist caricature of Oogy Boogy-wanting the villain reveal to be Dr. Finkelstein instead). Burton was barely even on set during the entire production. All he contributed was the fact he was producer, and his concept sketches. All the hard work-or rather-all the REAL work, I would argue, was done by Selick and Thomspon. Also Burton apprently threw a fit one time he was on set and punched a hole in the wall. : /

    2:00:52 I don't know, I feel like you're giving too much nuance to a situation that's pretty cut and dry. There's this tweet, in response to the rise of AI, that's like "it's ok to admit you want art that's made by people. You don't have to argue AI is ugly, it's enough to want people to make art". This changed how I interact with Hollywood. I love good art, but we have to prioritize people getting fair treatment above all else. No matter how good the movie is, I'd rather it not exist if Japanese people are almost nonexistent in the final project. These actors playing POC means that it's more profitable to pretend to be a minority than actually be one.
    And as for Japanese people liking the movie... That happens. Wendy Wu was many AS-AM Disney kid's favorite movie, speedy gonzales is popular in Mexico. I loved both characters. Doesn't erase the negative effects these characters had. Both depictions effected how people saw me as a Filipino/Mexican kid. Kids called people Wendy Wu and Speedy Gonzales as insults

Won the BAFTA, and VES award as well as nominated for the Oscar for best VFX! Definitely the best Laika movie so far! Also, why do you talk about VFX like it’s “easy” or takes away from a film?

      I literally said in the video you should to come your own conclusion about the whole union thing at LAIKA, but thanks for laying yourself bare.

      A studio squashes an attempt by its clearly hardworking workers to get the pay they deserve and at the same time the studio pays off the news so they don't report it. The commentator simply points out this egregious act, and your response to this is "something something cancel culture grrrrrrrr"???? Have some self-awareness at least you moron.

      if "acknowledging and informing folks that a company screwed over its employees so they can make an informed decision about consuming its products" is "cancel culture" then cancel culture is a good thing actually

      @@bexdeekay1272 It's not a good thing at all. If people stop watching these films then the company will go out of business and then all those "screwed over employee" will be unemployed and most likely have to move to a different state or country to find work. After working on a film for 3-5 years the one thing you look forward to is having people enjoy it and love it as much as you do. So when they tank at the box office it's a terrible feeling. Boycotting Laika movies will only hurt the employees that work hard to make them... Trust me.

      @@mattbeightol nobody is obligated to watch these movies and if people choose to boycott because of the controversy thats their right. and if they decide to continue to support them, thats their right too.
      FilmFreak isnt trying to "cancel" anyone by putting that info out there, and to act like thats what he's trying to do after spending 2.5 hours heaping praise on the studio is ridiculous.
      if Laika doesnt want controversy over quashed unionization attempts, maybe they should let their employees fucking unionize. dont push the blame onto the consumer if a billionaire CEO's decision to disrespect his staff hurts his bottom line.

    Yeah... Madame Frou Frou made me very uncomfortable. I am a Trans Woman who has Passing Privilege. I do think it is worth mentioning that Laika seemingly has a very Pro-LGBT presence in their social media. They highlight LGBT employees during Pride Month with bios. They even do photos with the puppets holding Pride Flags. Something tells me they don't stand by bigotry.
