  • A bit of a rant about poor service from Jaguar dealerships - or is my car just Jinxed?

    We had an XF Sportbrake which kept hunting around the gears, which didn’t make for the smoothest drive. Took it to the main dealer and they said “it’s a learning gearbox, Sir”. When we pointed out that it clearly had learned the wrong habits, they then asked if the car had more than one driver. We said both of us drove the car. To which they replied “that must be confusing it”. They then wanted £350 to reset the adaptations.
    When I pointed out to them that they seemed to have designed a gearbox that fucks itself up because it’s trying to be a smartarse but can’t cope if more than one driver uses the car, they could say nothing more than “that’s how it’s designed”.

      Yup, sounds about right. On one of my more frustrating trips to the service bay at my local dealership, the manager said to me - "I don't know why your shouting at me... I'm the Service Manager". Duh!

    I had the opposite problem with servicing on my XJ - it went in to the dealer for a new ride height sensor and came out with a service that I hadn't asked for!

      Congratulations! That's how Jaguar service should be. This is my fourth Jaguar and I have frankly been astonished at how poor the service has become over the past few years.

      Thank you Mehmet, and yes, I agree it was a beautiful car to own and drive - it's just the service you get (or don't get) at the dealerships that lets them down. I have finally got around to replacing this car, with something quite different! Watch this space.. new video coming soon (once the snow clears).

    Sadly JLR will be finished by the end of the year.
    Their parts supply is diabolical and the range of cars isn't what folk want plus the nightmare of Range Rovers getting stolen is being rectified way too slowly and you can't insure them.
    Such a shame as I love the XJ and I am still determined to own one.
    I do my own servicing, always have always will.
    Never ever go to a main dealer

    I learned my lesson with diesels and main dealers, I had a Lexus IS220D sport, full main dealer service history and on one service they overfilled it with oil and that buggered the DPF, they denied it and I was stymied. Since then I bought an XF 3.0ltr petrol and have had that maintained at a Jaguar specialist, Swallows in Somerset and I've never had a problem with them, they know how to look after both the car and the customer, I've always had a curtesy car when needed too. I've since bought a a 3.0ltr supercharged portfolio XJ and that will be impeccably maintained also at Swallows Jaguar. Main dealers are main stealers.

    I've a 3L S diesel F-Pace - and have found similar issues with my local dealer in Dundee. They talk a lot - but don't ever seem to be able to fix anything. I find you need to spell everything out to them in minute detail - and then have them confirm everything back to you when you pick it up - otherwise half of what it's been in for doesn't get done. When I was a lad and worked for Heron Rossleigh - there was always a quality inspector who test drove and checked off all work completed in the workshop before the keys were given back to service reception. The advisors on service reception were either ex-mechanics or has substantial mechanical experience - I don't believe that this exists any more, and service reception in Jaguar Dundee seems to be staffed by wee girls in short skirts and tight tops. Now I love my Jag - in fact I'm going there today to swap it out for another one which hopefully won't give me as much bother as this one has, failing which, like yourself, I'll be moving on to some other marque. On a positive note - I did have my car in for a repeat fault that Dundee couldn't fix to Jaguar Inverness - and they were better than Dundee in that not only did they fix the problem that Dundee couldn't - but they also found another issue fixed under warranty that Dundee never reported when the car was with the the week previous (worn inner track rod end). I find generally that comms are poor from them all though, and it's always the customer who has to chase for updates. Are BMW / Merc / Audi dealerships any better? - who knows - lol.

      Hi Ewan, sounds like you are having a bit of a 'mare. The dealership in Dundee is part of the same group I took my car to in Edinburgh once - well twice really, the second time so that they could fix the things they failed to do at the service. They are probably the worst to deal with both in terms of service as well as sales. Unfortunately it seems to be all about the profit these days. Previously, I'd bought three Jag's without issue from the dealership in Edinburgh prior to it being taken over by the current group - who also seem to be the same company that run most of the BMW dealerships in your neck of the woods at least - so I take your point on that. The fourth - the XJ R-Sport was bought at the dealership in Inverness. They were great, up until the first service when the software update was applied which made it run in kilometres per hour. The one in Ayr similarly correctly diagnosed a problem that Edinburgh denied was there but ultimately, due to a lack of spares, couldn't be repaired and caused the car to stop functioning completely while I was on Islay. Get out of that. I simply don't understand why any business would want to provide such poor service. If I treated my own customers the way that the dealerships seem to, I wouldn't be buying any Jags! Rant over.

    The engine on my 2014 jaguar XJL died at 126K miles. (All routine and regular maintenance performed meticulously). The dealership said I could get a new engine for $25,000. I spent over $13,000 in repair and maintenance in the three years I had this car. Now I have a 4100 pound paperweight in my driveway.

    I've had a lot of jags for around 14 years or so now and in my experience they are great as long as you can keep them away from the dealers. Unfortunately its difficult to do this with the diesels so I've stuck to the petrols and they've been great, utterly reliable therefore not as much chance for the dealers to ruin the experience. Unfortunately though for my latest one, a new XE, the dealer decided to wash it with a brush before I collected it, so I showed up to collect a brand new car that they had just covered in scratches. Obviously I complained and it was booked in a couple of weeks later for a machine polish and detail whilst I borrowed an iPace for the weekend. Seemed fair enough as the XE is only a lease car anyway. But of course due to the incompetence of the dealer I arrived that weekend and was told I couldn't have the iPace as the battery was flat! So I had to complain again, luckily they gave me an F-Pace SVR and a tank of fuel for the weekend instead which made up for it. But did they do a good job putting the XEs paintwork right?....No, not really, had to polish myself. Its due a service in 6 months and I will not be taking it to the main dealer for that or anything else. Luckily the car is fantastic which is the only reason I stick with them.

    • @twincarbs8637
      @twincarbs8637  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, all too familiar issues with dealerships. I used to insist that they did not wash my cars due to swirls in the paintwork. There are many good specialist (non-dealership) Jaguar garages around and they do awesome work but if you have a lease car or need to protect your warranty then choice is restricted. I bet the F-Pace SVR was a blast though !

    • @leeevernden
      @leeevernden 3 роки тому

      @@twincarbs8637 Indeed, my XE is a company lease but I will check with the lease company if there are alternatives for servicing as I don't trust the dealer at all. And yes the F-pace SVR is an amazing bit of kit, that 5.0 engine is incredible, so much fun and sounds brilliant with the active exhaust open. It remains the only SUV I'd consider buying.

    Hi bernard , a simple look at your V5 will tell you if your car is a euro5 or euro6 model , the latter is full of problems inc dpf , egr valves , throttle bodys , turbos, and manifold problems , a warranty is esential on these cars , the range rover and range rover sport share the same engine. these cars do not like short jorneys , i had 2 of them a 60plate then a 64 plate , i retired then decidided to get shot of the very nice 64plate euro 5 with less than 25k on the clock , simply due to my short journeys , bought a xkr now got a f type , petrol is way forward , if keeping yours warranty is essential . good luck

    JLR have poor service indeed. I bought european assistance from them and while in Europe I got puncture. I phoned the service and they said they cant help me as they could not identify my. They demanded letter, documents and all that arguments that on their own website says 'all you need VIN' was simply useless. Having been for 2h on hard-shoulder decided to use local help. Jaguar - nice cars crappy service and after sells.

    It doesn't look like the car was jinxed as much as you were cursed with bad servicing and garages right down to the wheels. I am thinking of buying a 2nd hand low mileage 2017. I suppose my deal will be better because of depreciation factored in and I won't be tied into main dealerships.

The XJ in particular was badly let down by the service I received (or rather, didn't receive) from a number of different dealerships. Please don't let this review put you off owning one - just avoid main dealerships. Enjoy!
