Sanitizing our Fresh Water Tank in our NuCamp T@B 400 RV

  • In this week's episode, we show you how we sanitize the fresh water system in our 2018 NuCamp T@B 400. Although we never drink the water from our fresh water tank, we do use it for washing dishes and taking showers. We utilize the bleach method to sanitize the tank and water lines. We use 1/4 cup of bleach for ever 15 gallons of fresh water. Our fresh water tank is a 30 gallon tank we use 1/2 cup of bleach. We allow it to set for a minimum of 8 hours. Sometimes we start it in the eventing and let it set overnight before finishing it up the next day.

    Just one comment. You say you do it at the beginning of every season. If I remember right the manual suggests doing it before every trip or if it exceeds two weeks. If you think about it, bacteria breed incredibly quickly, you want to knock them down if its been a while since you used it.
    After every trip I completely drain the system. During the prep for the trip I sanitize the system, I'll then decide if I want to travel with empty or full tanks as appropriate for the trip.
    Here's one more tip. A full water tank can take hours to empty completely. If you aren't that patient, you can use the water pump to pump the water out and into the grey tank. Since its just water, you can leave the grey tank open if you want. I find it takes a lot less time to empty the tank this way.

    Excellent video and explanation! I did ours when we first got our 400. The only thing I did somewhat differently was that after waiting a few hours, I ran water through both sinks, the toilet, and the shower until most of the fresh tank had emptied into the gray and black tanks, eyeballing the water levels until they were each about 3/4 full. I realize there’s no real need to sanitize anything but the fresh water tank, but the idea of putting a stop to any bacteria growing in the other tanks appealed to me. Once everything was drained, I repeated the process
    with plain water. I’m happy to read that Alde says it’s ok to not bypass the water heater, as I forgot, but I’ll bypass it next time.

    Another great video, if I may suggest a few things, always use unscented bleach and always use freshly purchased bleach. Bleach has only a 3% concentration and ages very fast depending on where its stored and if the container is tightly sealed. I enjoy your instructional videos there always great! Happy trails!

    I went camping two weeks ago with my friend Elaine. As we have external tanks, Elaine went to refill the aqua roll. There was a discrepancy between the fresh water tap and the aqua roll. Elaine found the “hose” to help fill it up. It was only on my fourth cup of tea she told me she had put the hose back. I asked where it was and of course realisation hit me😱😱😱😱😱 Elaine had used the GREY water hose to help fill our fresh water!!! Good job we boiled the water first. Took me two hours to re set the whole thing. Moral - don’t let the ladies fill up the tanks!! Well at least not Elaine!!

    I almost had it right. I’ve not been leaving the bleach water in long enough and forgot about the outdoor shower. I funnel the bleach through the hose, then connect to the hose bib in order to sanitize the fresh water hose. A Camco water tank filler with shutoff valve works great when filling the fresh tank too.

    • @TravelswithDelaney
      @TravelswithDelaney  4 роки тому

      You might have some air in the lines and typically it will work itself out by just letting it try to pull water up. Also, there is a little screw on filter at the pump that can possible get clogged so you might check it. Also, try drawing water from different locations such as kitchen, bath, outdoor shower and see if any of them sound like they are trying to bring water up. Usually you will get a sputtering sound

    I had a carrer working in a states drinking water program and the standard is 5% solution and let it sit for 24 hours. You need to bypass the hotwater heater because the bleach is corrosive and never have the hot water heater turned on!!! If you fill the tank all the way up you disinfect the tanks too. Romove or by pass any water filters with activated carbon because you will either remove the bleach or damage the carbon.

  • @aprilmarie1829

    We did this last trip. I think I put in too much bleach. We drained the fresh water tank but it still smells like bleach for our first fresh water fill.

    Hello Patrick. Thank you again for your videos. Extremely helpful. Question, how long should it take to fill the Fresh Water Tank? Minutes or hours? I was in the process of sanitizing my fresh water tank & plumbing but my inside monitor still read Empty after some 20 minutes. Cracked the Fresh Water Drain Valve & water did flow so thinking it just takes quite a while to fill the tank. Thanks

    • @TravelswithDelaney
      @TravelswithDelaney  4 роки тому +1

      It really all depends on how big your fresh water tank is. Ours is 30 gallons and can take 15 minutes or more to fill.depending on water pressure.

    I have a Tab 400 aswell.......what do you have the water heater setting when bleach is in the system?

    • @TravelswithDelaney
      @TravelswithDelaney  4 роки тому +1

      Scott Denhof I bypass the water heater however Spencer from Alde told me it would not hurt the system if I didn’t. He said Alde believes you don’t have to sanitize the water heater because they say it gets hot enough to sanitize itself.

    I just did our new 400. I put hot water in bypass mode, urban legend or maybe fact says to keep bleach out of Alde, comments? I also read in NuCamp manual that minimum three hours, so that is what I did to expedite process, it was getting dark. Otherwise my procedure looked just like yours, 1st time ever doing it too.

    • @TravelswithDelaney
      @TravelswithDelaney  5 років тому

      I actually called Alde about this and they told me that it wouldn't hurt the water heater if I wanted to run it through it. I think doing what you feel most comfortable with is best. I have done both ways before.

    • @shelbyh.griggs1242
      @shelbyh.griggs1242 5 років тому +1

      Well if Alde says, it doesn't hurt, then that is what I will probably do in future, it isn't so much about what I feel is right, but about doing damage to the Alde based on an apparent urban legend. I am good either way as long as it doesn't damage the inner workings of the Alde.@@TravelswithDelaney

      Shelby H. Griggs I’m going to talk to the Alde rep next week at uCamp if he’s there. The lady I talked to at Alde said that the bleach water wasn’t mixing with the glycol so it wouldn’t be an issue.

      @@TravelswithDelaney I think the concern was more about the bleach reacting with metals in the boiler, copper, aluminum, stainless or whatever is internal and maybe solder if that is used? Maybe just the Internet overreacting, however, clarification on that from Alde would be good. Look forward to the answer after Ucamp!

      +Terry Van Domelen We are able to dump our tanks into our home septic tank. As far as low point drains going into rhe ground, I’m personally not concerned at my house on our stone driveway. It’s a very diluted mixture and my guess is less harmful than if we wash our cars or trailer in the driveway.
