Security Breach! Keeping Your Trailer Safe
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 лип 2024
- Each year, RV trailers get stolen from storage lots, parking lots and even campgrounds. How are you keeping your trailer safe? Could the coupler lock you are using on the tongue of your trailer result in a security breach? In this video, we show you how we are now locking our trailer up once when we are unhitched. We will also look at how easy it is to remove most locks currently being sold on the market. We just purchased the Fort Knox Lock with an Abloy Sentry Steel puck lock. See how easy it is to lock it up and avoid a security breach. Much of keeping your trailer or RV safe is to provide a deterrent to keep people honest. The Fort Knox Lock's 3/16 welded steel will make it tough for most anyone to hitch your trailer up.

Another popular option among RV owners is the lock from Proven Industries. Check it out here from our friends, The Roads We Roam: ua-cam.com/video/mDDLuTfC89M/v-deo.html
A great way to protect your campers!
Patrick, I too was considering the Proven Industries lock until I watched the Lock Picking Lawyer do this: ua-cam.com/video/CUmLf-Wsr0o/v-deo.html
But Michael have you see THIS? It is one of the locks he actually recommends.
ua-cam.com/video/xVtHiX12TVw/v-deo.html
@@colleend2977 Yes, but in LPL's video #953, he mentions that Proven had redesigned the Puck Lock, which makes it vulnerable to drilling and now recommends replacing that with a different lock: ua-cam.com/video/CUmLf-Wsr0o/v-deo.html
I’ve had a couple different brands of those hitch locks like you pried off with the claw hammer and I’ve always thought they fit too sloppy. Seems like if they’d make the lock point graduations tighter they’d be a lot harder to pry off like that. One setting is sloppy and the next won’t quite catch, so you end up with a lot of slop allowing a claw hammer to get under the bale. Looks like I’ll be calling Fort Knox Locks!
It may have been mentioned already, but you may want to hide a GPS tracker somewhere in the trailer as well.
That is a great idea!
We thought of that too, but there is a monthly service fee for those... So what we do when we feel the need, is to leave one of our iPhones hidden inside our T@G ... then we would use "Find my Phone" to track it. We've only done this once when we felt that there wasn't enough coverage in the campground. Most often, in state campgrounds, there are enough campers around to feel fairly safe. ~ Maria
WOW! We couldn't be more surprised and grateful for the wonderful review. I kept thinking that your review was presented better than if I had done it myself. Just 1 FYI, our steel Abloy Sentry locks are plated but not stainless. We are sending a small thank you in the mail for your more than kind review. I will also confirm that the Proven Locks are the only other lock company out there who take trailer security as seriously as we do. Our small Ft. Locks Locks family thanks you!
You are quite welcome for the review! Thank you for clarifying that the Abloy Sentry locs are plated and not stainless. We are really impressed with your lock and your company! Thank you for making a great product to help us RVer's protect our investments.
After watching your video and just your statement not only of the cost of the trailer but that you keep your pets in there sometimes made me think of my pet we sometimes leave in our trailer when we are away for a couple hours. How devastating that would be to not only loose your camper and the modifications and expense but to realize that someone took your pet who doesn't even want it, horrible. I called Fort Knox Locks this morning and mentioned that I saw the review and the guy said "that wouldn't happen to have been Travels with Delaney would it?" He was shocked that a review on a smallish UA-cam channel could have made so many people call and ask about their product. He said "you would think we paid him $1000 to make that video or something". I said, it's the trust you guys have built with your followers. Keep up the great work. Getting my lock on Thursday and leaving for a trip the next week, with more peace of mind.
Thank you so much for your kind words. One of the reasons that I rarely accept free products to review is because I want to give an unbiased opinion on the product. Our channel is nothing without the trust of all of you . I am not saying that we are perfect in our assessments but hopefully at least people realize that we are just going through the same process as them in trying to enjoy their RV's.
Awesome information 👍😊 thanks for sharing and safe travels
Such a great way to keep your campers safe!
V-e-r-y interesting & informative video, Patrick. I've found all the "comments/replies" just as interesting & informative. It isn't just the price of the trailer your protecting, it's the price/time/effort of all the upgrades + the emotional experience + having to deal with a trashed out & stripped trailer if it is found. The individual parts/components of a trailer are easy to sell & hard to trace back to the original owner. What likely gets found & returned to you is just the shell of your trailer.
One of these days a SMART manufacturer is going to take the time to etch the units serial number onto the internal components & simply advertise/promote with an "Operation ID" type of sign on the units door/hitch/tongue/etc.
In the meantime, it is the OWNER'S RESPONSIBILITY to take the time & effort to do the "OPERATION ID" by etching/engraving easily seen & highly visible IDENTIFICATION on all the individual internal components WHICH REMOVES THE ECONOMIC INCENTIVE TO TAKE YOUR TRAILER IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Do some HIGHLY VISIBLE engraving/etching on the lock you just bought & put some "OPERATION ID" stickers in numerous exterior places on your T@B400 & TRUCK.
All great points Bill! Thanks for sharing. They are helpful to me and the entire community
Great info. Thanks for sharing! It's crazy how easy the old lock was to remove!
I know! I could not believe it myself either. And I had paid $50 for that lock last summer out in Washington.
Patrick,
You may recall, after meeting with you and Patti and seeing your Lance TT with the Fort Knox Lock, we called and got one too! Its one of the best investments we’ve ever made to our E-Pro TT….. The other being the Soft Start for our AC!!
Thx so much! The lock provides security and peace of mind!
Happy RV’n!!
Joe Lam
Hi Joe! Hope you are both doing well! Yes...we love having the Fort Knox lock on our trailer. They are well made and definitely give us peace of mind when our trailer is not hooked up to the truck.
@@TravelswithDelaney 💜🏜️🌷
We went with the puck lock that fits into the yellow steel housing sold at Ft Knox Lock.
Thanks for the information I just placed an order and let them know I found it through you and he said you in about 5000 others so they have to appreciate you.
Great security system. Thanks
Thank you Jerry! Quite the upgrade from what we had.
Another great video! That Ft. K ox Lick looks really nice! Can’t believe you were able to pop that other lock off with just a hammer!
Thank you! It was crazy how easy that came off with just the hammer.
As I was told once all a lock is good for is keep a honest person honest
Very true!
We install the ball hitch lock (first one you pried off) with the upper wrap around rod under the ball hitch release lever. This prevents someone from prying it forward. Can’t say it is 100% secure, but I feel it adds an additional layer of protection.
I hadn't tried that....it would definitely slow them down.
No one is taking off with your trailer now. What a great product and investment! Love the video. :)
Thank you! If they do get the trailer, they will definitely have to work harder.
I use a Blaylock EZ Lock it functions pretty similar to the one that you forced off with the hammer. Now to prevent that I always secure the chains by wrapping it and secure it between the bar and once you put the lock on if they wanted it that bad it would take more than an hammer and a bolt cutter to remove it great video as always.
Thank you Paul!
Thanks for info I am buying a ft knocks lock tomorrow.
We love ours. Makes us feel better about it when we are not hitched up.
Thank you for this! . . . we just ordered ours :-)
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching.
Great video and thanks for sharing. I'll check out their website. I want to also add for us two axle trailer folks to stay away from the X-Chock as far as trailer security. I discovered that if you deflate each tire 1 to 1.5 -PSI that the X-Chock along with your master lock slide right out. This is only good for a wheel chock but you could save a lot of money by purchasing the plastic or rubber version. Safe travels y'all.
That is great information for the two axle trailer owners. Thank you for sharing.
Excellent video!
I thought I was crazy on spending over $200 for my hitch lock but like you, I just spent $20k+ for a trailer, I’m not going 5o cheap out on a hitch. I’ve seen many of those yellow locks for $30 get taken off on utility trailers and then next few days the trailer going missing.
I’ve got a different type and I’m going to make a video on it. I think items like this are very important!
Take care, Bill in Utah
Thank you Bill! We should have gotten one of these a long time ago. We feel fortunate to not have had any issues.
We do use the lock with a ball that fits up into the hitch as also, we may have to rethink our security.
Thanks for the info.
It was pretty sad how easily I was able to pop ours off. I paid $50 for that at an RV dealership in Washington last summer.
Good product!!!
It is definitely very solid and well built.
Being born at Fort Knox I have to say I love the name. This is really cool. I like it. Thanks for sharing.
There’s something I didn’t know about you William! Very cool.
Travels with Delaney Yes sir a very proud Army brat.
Looks like a good lock. We use Proven Industries lock which is similar. We've been happy with it so far. Gotta take measures to protect your home on the road.
Russ and Kerry from the Roads We Roam also use a Proven Industries lock on their Little Guy Max.
Amazing Patrick...I have been doing some research on security. I have been using a Reese lock and not real comfortable with that as I have seen some vids on how easy it is to slip by getting it off. I have been wanting a family owned type company to support in my purchase, as you and I agreed on in Va when we met, and I did not know of one. Looks like you have a home run here. We are going out on our maiden trip here in a few weeks for spring break and I still was undecided. Thanks again for great video content. I am going to look at this one as a strong option. :)
Definitely check out their website Ron. They have several videos on the site about lock fails and them trying to get theirs to fail.
Im ordering this ASAP...Good investment.
After seeing how easy it was go pry off the $50 lock, we should have ordered this one a long time ago
Great information. Worth the investment. Small price to pay actually.
You are so right! It really is a small price when you consider that cost of the trailers.
Just watched your walk through of your new Alliance 22! Saw this and was interested in what you started camping in. Quite the nice teardrop but I’m sure you really are enjoying the new fifth wheel with all its room!
Thanks! Tab 400 on the way for us. We will get and check out your store.
Congratulations on the T@B 400! You will love it!
I’m sold on the Fort Knox because right now they are offering free shipping and they let you have the option of choosing one of their puck locks or getting your own. It’s a newer product so thieves aren’t as familiar with it as the Proven Industries.
That lock will stop most anyone from getting to your hitch, adding a GPS tracker will get the rest. I like to mount a small trail camera to see who messing with my camp when Im out cheap and effective. Thank you, great topic, I wish we lived in a world where we didn't need so much security
It is sad that we have to go to such lengths to protect our trailers. That is a great idea about the trail cam. Thank you for sharing that.
I like it. I use wheel chock locks also. I will probably upgrade to the ft Knox also.
We may add a wheel lock as well
You're ignorant if you think any of this adds more than a couple seconds. It's only slowing YOU down.
I need this!
I could not believe how easy it was to remove my old $50 lock!
That looks like a good set up.
Definitely a huge upgrade from what we had.
Thank for the awesome information, im buying a diamond c tilt trailer for hauling my offroad vehicles the is 22 feet long and diamond c considered the top of the line msrp 15k and the type of hitch on this trailer can be just unbolted and i see ft knox sells ths demco ez latch/c- channel lock combination lock 349.00 for added security a small price to have some piece of mind along with gps tracking thanks for good information 😊
Thanks for the tip on a better puck lock! I use the Proven Industry hutch lock and it looks like it could be a better “mouse trap”. I say this because could someone with a battery operated grinder simply grind the end off the hinge pin and drive the pin out?
I don’t know...maybe be.
I'm not so confident in my locks after watching your video... Thank you for sharing.😰
I could not believe how easy it was for me to remove that old lock.
I use the Proven Industries hitch lock. Add a wheel lock and cameras and you become the most difficult target. Expensive, but worth it if you're a full-timer.
Proven Industries is the more well know brand on the market and they are well built.
@@TravelswithDelaney Just installed the Proven Industries stainless steel hitch pin lock its super beefy and absolutely the best made by far.
Nice thought but often they hook onto the chains we provide or the yoke giving them ability to just drive away.
You are correct if someone wants it they'll get it so we do the best we can.
We are the owners of a T@B also will be heading out soon. As for T@Bs I would suggest we also consider turning the unit causing more time necessary for the theft.
Happy travels and let's hope the "God's" are with us?
It's really all about creating a deterrent. Be safe and have a great trip when you head out!
That lock looks a lot easier to deal with than the Proven Industries lock I have on mine. I'm not going to go to the expense to replace it at this point. What I find interesting is how much slop both the Ft. Knox and the Proven have. Oh, you might want to keep your pin lock, it will slow someone down from unhooking your camper while you're in eating a meal.
Robert Panick Yes....definitely keeping the pin lock on while traveling just as a deterrence.
Thanks. Pin safe, think I might get one. RV=money sink! :)
Great Video...great info...definitely looking into this for our Lance. Did u have to buy another for your 1985?
I actually still need to order a new one for our Lance and I am getting one before we head out for the summer.
Looks like a good product but I think I’d add a wheel boot.
That may be next! LOL Although Patty may cut off my spending soon.
i wonder how much longer it would take to pry it off if you installed it properly.
We have a MegaHitch coupler lock. It's similar to yours but I can't secure the chains.
I am not sure how important securing the chains are actually.
I totally agree. A small price to make sure the RV and more importantly the pets don't disappear. I would put some type of anti-theft device on the top of the priority list.
I honestly could not believe how easy it was to get that $50 lock off.
It’s time for trailer manufacturers to install a brake system inside the cabin!
Does that hitch lock cover the hitch bolts?
What happens if you break your key off in this lock?
So Sad that we have to go to such great lengths to stop crime, of course the worst thing is that these are all DETERRENTS, if someone has their eye on the trailer it is gone, from flatbeds to chains to removable of wheels etc. This is a good deterrent and coupled with the suggestion of 101taiga's of a GPS tracker, a very good start!
You are so right Paul!
Like my father-in-law always said. "If a thief wants it bad enough, they will get it. But you gotta do something to slow them down".. Most times the harder an item is visibly difficult to take, the thief will pass on the item.
This thing definitely screams...."Move along....nothing to steal here!" LOL
Lock Picking Lawyer drilled out the puck lock in 30 seconds.
Somebody has been watching the Lock Picking Lawyer videos!
I was! LOL I found those videos very interesting and useful.
I have never met a lock that will not freeze solid and if you loose the key you are out of luck! Be sure to bring a torch just in case.
Luckily my wife has the backup key
I might be "Captain Obvious" in this statement but be sure to lubricate the tumblers in the puck lock if it is left outside in winter weather. Ice may form in the tumblers making it difficult to get a key to work properly in the lock. I have experienced this on the puck lock I use with the equipment shed at work.
I'd like to suggest squirting powdered graphite into the tumblers rather than a grease or oil lubricant.
Is powdered graphite something you can pick up at any hardware type store?
@@TravelswithDelaney Possibly, I know its available @ Home Depot.
I don't know if it's true, but I've been told that in Florida there are boat thieves who cut the trailer tongue off, quickly weld a replacement on, and then drive the boat trailer away. If you really want to be paranoid, I'd think that some kind of wheel lock might be more secure than a trailer hitch lock.
If they want it bad enough, they will figure out a way to get it. More deterrence than anything.
Wow. Well worth the money. Does the insurance company provide a discount for using it? Do you put a camera aimed towards the hitch when you are gone?
We don't have a camera pointed at it when we are gone. I need to check with State Farm to see if there would be any discounts for the advanced security lock.
Now since you have this- What do you use for a pin lock while you are traveling. I had a nightmare dream last night that someone stole our trailer while in the store. Thank God I woke up to a safe and sound trailer at home. Are there better pin locks than others?
I have not found a great pin lock for towing yet. I am sure the one I have can be removed with decent pair of bolt cutters.
Is there anything that can be used for a trailer that is hitched onto your SUV that can keep from being stolen? I have a nice kayak trailer and worry about it while I'm out on the lake!
You can get a pin lock which will act as a deterrent. They are also make wheel locks that you might consider using while you are away.
“Almost $30,000”; for a 400.
Oh! Those days!
Now a 320 is over the $30,000 😔
Proven industries lock is the best lock to keep your trailer safe.
Why do you believe it is better than the Fort Knox Lock?
I worked at a maximum security prison with robbers & thieves galore. If they want your trailer bad enough there is precious little you can do to actually stop them. They will have a can of freon, spray it into your exorbitantly expensive lock, hit it with a small sledge hammer and it's all over but the crying and insurance claim.
Always secure your investment, but don't for one moment think you're home free from theft. Happy trails!!
With a teardrop trailer, I am guessing a skid loader would work well too! LOL
@@TravelswithDelaney 😂😆
Have you researched the various wheel locks?
Yes I have.
Holy cow, I remember your video from Florida showing us how you locked it up with your old lock. I am looking into buying a TAB 320. Can I ask why it is important to lock the chains up? Do people steal trailers with just the chains? I am completely new to RV's so please excuse a newby question.
If I might help out here A Pow... They can take the chains and loop them over the hitch and drive off to a safe place where they can then make the noise it takes to take of any lock. Even with this lock, they can take the loop the chains make and secure their chain around it and do the same. What I think we are going to do is make the chains to where we can remove them with heavy snap links and then they will not be there. I DEFINITLY love this lock though. We love Patty and Patrick...good folks. Love their suggestions. We are going to get one of these for our T@b 400.
@@ronblack45 Thank you for your response. I think I would add some wheel locks to this set up. The removable chain idea is smart, but it sounds like the thieves can still wrap their own chains around the large locking ftknox box.
Thank you Ron for helping out with this one!

Welcome! We are glad to have you join us!
I have ordered a Nucamp Tab 400 and was wondering which model of Ft Knox Lock that you ordered for your hitch. I would like to have the lock on hand when the trailer arrives. Thanks!
We have a 2018 T@B 400 and ours takes the Atwood Plus Lock. You might want to call NuCamp to verify they have not changed the tongue with the newer models.
Travels with Delaney Yes they have changed the hitch. I ordered the Atwood Plus lock and it did not fit. The flange on the hitch is wider.
@@bobdavis8915 I contacted Nucamp and was told that they did not change the hitch/coupler so I ordered the Atwood Plus. I have not received it yet but it is the mail. Please let me know which one you replaced it with. Thanks!
First let me say I have contacted Ft. Knox and they have been very understanding and wanting to help. Just to make sure it will fit I would measure the width of your hitch about 6” from the end. If it is more than 3 7/8” this lock will not fit. Check for a plate welded under the hitch.
@@ianwatchman5001 Have you received yours and did it fit?
Unfortunately we have a high level of those whose character and professions are thieves for life. Be careful at all costs. Ft Knox are the best locks, in whatever capacity.
Definitely better to be safe than sorry
can't you just tap out the hinge pin?
There's weld on the top and the bottom of the pin on the hinge. Looks like it would take some major power tools and noise to get to that point.
Don't break your key off in that lock, I don't think most campground offices have a Harbor Freight acetylene cutting torch.
That lock has a hinge on it, similar to the hinges on a door. It looks like all someone has to do is knock the hinge pin out and the lock opens up! Other new tongue locks don't have the
hinge with a pin going through it. I wouldn't buy this lock.
It definitely could be opened but someone would be making a heck of a racket to actually get that hinge off. Most any lock can be broken with the right tools. In the end, it’s a deterrent more than anything
In your research why did you pick the Ft Knox over a Proven Industry lock.
I wanted the Abloy Sentry stainless steel puck lock which is considered one of the most difficult locks you can pick. You can get one for the Proven Industries but it was $100 more. Plus I really appreciated the small family business story behind Ft. Knox Locks. I think both would be great.
@@TravelswithDelaney I'm pretty sure the puck locks would fit either enclosure. The Lockpick Lawyer did a break into the puck lock that Proven Industries uses. It took him a bit of effort, but he did get in. But, he's also likely a level or two more informed than most people doing this. If you're dealing with a pro, they're going to get it.
Just hit it with the hammer and the other you can bend it a little with a hammer too. It will break right off because being harden steel. Here is a better lock: www.provenlocks.com and then add a GPS tracker too: gpsandtrack.com/trailer-track-gps/
Thank you
Hitch locks are worthless. What keeps the bad guy from just rapping his chain to your trailer and driving off? Fast and easy! The obvious choice is securing the wheels.
You might want to jiggle the key when locking it to make sure the lock is fully engaged. BTW, the "lock picking lawyer" says the stainless version is not optimal in that it is easier to drill through. Picking (which he does on that same video) requires such special equipment, that in my view means they're going to take your trailer no matter what you do. ua-cam.com/video/UBAFthdYbgw/v-deo.html
Thank you!
I prefer shorter intros, such as in your new format I think you and your channel are doing fine. Please don't drink too much of the odd couple kool-aid.
Thank you! Actually we work with Tim Shmoyer's group, Video Creators, to improve our channel. Tim and his team have been very helpful in making our channel better.
You paid 30k for that tiny POS? You've already been robbed.
Then you volunteers to be robbed again with that yellow metal box than can be defeated in 10 seconds with a cordless grinder. You're focusing on the lock.. thieves will just cut the hinge.
Why a POS? Have you owned one before? What brand do you own? What type of lock do you recommend? Will I find the answers to these questions on your UA-cam channel?
