I did my first run on Sa Calobra just last Tuesday (a day after you). For a mere mortal, I consider my 39:16 at 3,52W/kg avg good. It was at a decent pace and only few riders passed me. Next time I might go full gas.
Hi Ed, really great timing on this video with the advice. We are flying out Saturday and I’m going to try and beat my time of 38 minutes from last year, I’ll be aiming for about 35 minutes. My best 35 minute power is 277 so I’ll be aiming to go for about 280 on the day! Hopefully I can beat it 👍
Hi Ed finally caught up with your video. Really helpful to get your insight into training context/background and your attempt breakdown. As you state ensure you are rested & loosened for your PR attempt. Plus plan for long ride in. I also noted your wise advice about not going full in at start & save something for last 2 Km. My own attempt did not follow that, up 30 seconds by halfway and desperately hanging on seeing seconds bleeding away🤦♂️😅, but PR achieved. Thanks again & chapeau on your own PR👏👏
Great Ed. Going to use this to try for a sub 25mins Monkey Mountain. Think that will need riding 5W over my long term FTP but doable. Needs good pacing.
I’ve been training the last 4months to try go sub 30.. I managed 32:32 which was a PB compare to my 34:45 last October. I’ve got to keep chipping away at it and I’ll be back to get it one day
Congrats! 🎉 loved the commentary on this video. I will look into the Kolie Moore‘s Test. How did you manage to overlay these stats and (even more impressive) the map over the video?
From a new software that I found - goprotelemetryextractor.com/telemetry-overlay-trial?affi=geochip&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwjLGyBhCYARIsAPqTz18m4TLWb308EOA0_0wc3MbQ1D8av4dyXj2Rs6qaZ01fPZj-6lITtK4aAgUREALw_wcB
hi Ed - Could You drop a link to the base line test You are referring to - I tried to google it but nothing come up cycling related :D PS. Congrats on Your sa Calobra effort !!!!
Superb Video.. I got a Hill Climb Race coming up (600 meters of climbing around 8-12%). Do you have any tips on intervall sessions ? I usually do 30/30 Intervalls (30 secs on / 30 secs off). Do you think it would be better to train longer intervalls like you did ? Thanks
Short hill climb. Providing you have created a good foundation for this event you need to focus on much shorter efforts if the climb is only 600m long. Unless you mean 600m altitude gain, in which case yes, do the type of training I did.
The problem with the “ramp” test protocols is they don’t really tell you anything more than your peak power output (power obtained at maximal V02). A lot of coaches and ergo platforms use that data to prescribe training zones but they seldom have any predictive validity.
The data is from my Strava, I use this site for the tech stuff goprotelemetryextractor.com/telemetry-overlay-trial?affi=geochip&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjwpNuyBhCuARIsANJqL9Ogu9T0LWwyCFgMHwbwidN8PraZjAEbM1mDA6OSY1F-uijiS6rs2sUaAjwaEALw_wcB
i have a question, do cyclist ever find it hard to get a deep breathe during a long hard effort? it happens to me sometimes and it forces me to let up by about 25 percent. could it be lactate acid or some type of inflammation in my chest? i unzipped my jersey one time and it seemed to help some, staying in an aero position likely doesnt help either. is this a thing, or is my will power to much for my body?
I sometimes get this too. It's weird though as it doesn't feel in line with how hard the effort is. As in, I'm not super out of breath when it happens.
@@rourkeyliiid4769 assuming its not underlying health issues, which is possible because these symptoms are very general and common with a number of issues. its likely anxiety or fatigue. whereas mine comes during long max efforts usually the tail end because i know i can push harder the last 3/4's. if i were you i would check food sensitivities/ allergies, get adequate rest, no drinking or smoking, reduce overall stress, and maybe do more zone 2 rides. in my case im looking at things like nose vs mouth breathing and breathing techniques, fasting and food choice to reduce bloat because the more room in the stomach means more lung expansion and lower blood pressure, then better pacing. i recently paced a 20 minute effort well enough to almost get the most out of myself but my legs still had more to give. but if your problem persists seeking medical help usually doesnt hurts as long as they dont misdiagnose which isnt that uncommon either.
Sorry, I'm not really in a position to even try and answer this. However, I know what you mean, and It could be a respiratory limit there maybe due to a previous illness like a very bad chest infection or similar, which can leave scarring in the lungs and limit capacity. I'm not saying this is it, but could be something similar.
IMO sa calobra is definitely overhyped. I dont rate it as the best climb on the island, it only just gets into my top 5 actually. Why its famous is because it is arguably one of the best descents in the world, it has a fairly unique dead end down aspect, and the 270⁰ loop. But as a climb, i think theres better. It would rise in my opinion if they could solve the traffic problem but thats a different discussion
I tried to get 45 minutes when 60 and planned a bit for it. The only thing I didn’t legislate for was tree cutting. I started fine but was stopped by police to allow for tree cutting ( this was 7.45am) close to the top. Moving time was 43.10secs. Strava time.. 67 minutes. That’s my one time effort

This video looks like me descending let alone climbing!
I've probably watched every sa calobra cycling video out there, and this one is the most informative.

You made me sweat reading this!!
Fantastic video. Got Sa Calobra coming up in September so will be using these training tips!
Awesome Ed and as always a fascinating insight into training et al 🚀🚴♂💪🙌
Awesome as always, thanks. I went up it in 39 minutes in March, and am now wanting to go back and knock minutes off that 🤣
Fantastic effort Ed👏👏👏
Thx for sharing the knowledge..well done again. M 👍

Great video Ed and well done on that effort. Out of interest did you compare your two best times on Strava to see where you made the improvements?
Yes i do. I gained all the time in the final half.
Wow, just Wow.

I just climbed this on Rouvy in just over an hour and faaarrrrkkkkk was it hard!

Interesting video. I'm sure with a couple of pacers, you would've gotten closer to Tom's time.
basically +2w on Tom, plus you should similar weight... I guess boils down to aero equipment or Tom was motor pacing
where do you get the data‘s from, to put them in the video? Resp. the app to transfer it into the video?

Based on your known FTP, weight, and time for this climb, what would you pick Pidcocks FTP as?
Pidcocks FTP will be around that 380w mark at the time he did this effort.
One day I hope to call a climb like Sa Calobra a "short effort" haha
im just here for the creamy welsh accent
You aren't the only one lol! Thanks for the comment, big fan of the channel!

@@edlaverackyeah it's hard to say, what's the first thing to fail for you or most ppl while on the limit and not letting up, Lactate acid in the legs?
How many years did you try for such a number (ftp)?
15 years!

Yeah. I don't do FTP test. I did some long 1h+ strava segments so I know where I am haha.
