In a sick way, shows you how obsessive Star Wars fans are with their fandom, even more so when in this case the original trilogy films are the core and foundation of everything they love about the franchise. Other than the holocaust comparission, the other ultimate sick and bad extreme is "George Lucas raped our childhood" claim. Dude, out of the millions of passionate Star Wars fans in the world I bet that several thousands of them suffered of being sexually raped or abused at some point in their lives and they won't dare to compare at all the pain and trauma caused from it to whatever disgust that the Special Edition changes made them felt, even more so if they happened to be victims of it at their childhood.
This is the worst example of toxic Star Wars fan boys. These so-called fans have actually made money by bashing, lying, stating wrong information, and generally trashing the creator of the very saga they supposedly love. The guys who made this POS are pathetic and aren't worthy of taking Lucas' trash out.
The kind of fans like the ones they are showing in this movie are the ones that really ruined it …….the gatekeeper fans that have this sense of entitlement and think they own Star Wars and throw temper tantrums when the story didn’t go the way they thought it should
No, the vast majority of those aren't true fans. They're casual Prequel haters masquerading as "true fans". Most only like the original trilogy and even then, just one film in the original trilogy - Ep. 5 -TESB. They only like[d] small bits and pieces of the entire STAR WARS universe. They treat[ed] STAR WARS like a salad bar, cherry picking only the small bits they like and ignoring/discarding all the rest. So they all banded together and followed people like the ones who made this film and other STAR WARS know-nothing casuals who had a loud criticizing "voice" on public platforms like UA-cam _[looking at you RedLetterMedia, Collider, John Campea etc. etc.]_ and they began the whole "Let's get rid of Lucas!" chant/mantra and were the ones who rolled out the red carpet to Di$ney, welcoming them with open arms. They were told long before that getting rid of Lucas and bullying him into selling off his creations to outsiders was going to be a monumental mistake but, they didn't listen. They just got drunk on the full blown hype they created for "Di$ney Wars" and now, they're the ones crying about how bad STAR WARS has become in such a short time... All while *NEVER* admitting _[but still silently realizing]_ that *THEY,* not the *_TRUE_* fans who stood by Lucas _[despite his flaws and failures with the Prequels],_ were and still are the *ONLY* ones responsible for the demise and death of STAR WARS...
I like the “fans” that bitch and complain and act like he’s the Antichrist for making edits and cuts to his movies but then they take his movies and make edits and cuts to them 😂😂😂
Everybody in this documentary talks about their hatred for jar jar and neither do they acknowledge the fact that they almost made the motion capture actor Ahmed Best commit suicide nor they even mention how badly they treated jake Lloyd, even though he was just a kid! Shame on those so called "fans"!
That's actually a complicated thing. While there was a lot of fan backlash against them, most of this stuff was actually shit drummed up by the media. There were dozens of news articles and major News companies dogpiling jar jar binks and young anakin, and then just putting the blame on the SW fanbase.
Wow, some people are really unable to grow up. I for one genuinely enjoyed the prequels. And profoundly despise people who would attack a 10 year old kid so heartlessly
I'm younger than most of these fans, yet I act more maturely than them is really sad. Honestly, these people are the reason why Star Wars is where it is now.
They were right... still are. Not all the changes are bad, but what is, is terrible. Han Shooting, Ghost Anakin, Jedi Rocks. And I would trade everything good to erase everything bad.
Disney made 5 SW films, 4 are fantastic, Rise of Skywalker sucked; one made over 2 bil, one 1.3 and two 1.1bil that's an incredible score board; I don't get the hate. All their shows are solid except Obi Wan. Andor competes with HBO's best, that's unheard of in SW or Sci-fi period.
It’s just history repeating itself. Fans back then were begging for the og cuts. Fans now are begging for the sequels to be erased from canon. The thing is though, the fans who want the OG cuts are right. It’s basic film preservation. Not releasing them is almost like erasing history. It’s fine to have new cuts of movies (Ridley Scott has like five different cuts of Blade Runner, and most people like his newest one the best!) but to forbid the public from seeing an original work of art that inspired fans for twenty years (that’s long enough for a Star Wars fan from ‘77 to have a kid and raise them on the original cuts too) is borderline dystopian.
These people hated on George so hard that he ended up selling Star Wars to Disney. Now these same people are now wanting him back, and are accepting the prequels. They are so annoying. I get that change can be scary, but they are overreacting like babies.
No we are not. We have walked away from the franchise. 20 years of crap is quite enough. George selling was the only thing that brought us back. Unfortunately Disney couldn't do much better, but at least they gave us Rouge One.
Its funny how even in a hit piece on George Lucas, they point out how he was not only not against fan edits, rather he was very supportive of fan edits and fan content. Like, yeah, he was in control of the direction the property went, but he always let the fans do what they wanted with it. And they still trashed him so much he felt the need to sell it and stop making films for the public.
@@Br1ckabrac Also to support your point all fan edits were free to post and watch here on youtube in abundance until Disney bought star wars. Amazing. GL had our backs this whole time. He never sued the guys that made and illegally sold blurays of the despecialized edition either.
To be honest, after seeing this documentary I can't blame Lucas for selling Star Wars to Disney if this was the way "true fans" were treating him and those involved in the Prequels, and as a lifelong fan of Star Wars I'm ashamed that these "true fans" claim to represent all of us, and demand we support them even when we can see they're in the wrong.
They weren't true fans. Just extremely indecent manchildren who were mentally disturbed/insane. I hate their guts. They are the sort of people that ruin star wars for me.
To be honest, I came away from this firmly on the side of George Lucas. I understand that fans are passionate and have deep, deep care and affection for StarWars. But those toxic, petty, obnoxious fans went way too far with their criticism and personal attacks towards the actors and George himself.

While I still feel some Special Edition changes were unnecessary (like for instance a CGI rock added in front of R2-D2 when he's hiding from sand people), I've honestly gotten used to the changes. And though I don't love the prequels or sequels as much as the original trilogy, I still don't mind them.
George Lucas is out of the picture and is no longer the whipping boy. Kathleen Kennedy could resign and whoever her successor is would then be blamed for everything wrong with the franchise. Fandoms need a scapegoat. First it's Braga who ruined the Trek franchise and now Kurtzman is to blame.

Most of the criticisms of the prequels come from a complete lack of understanding of narrative and poetry as it pertains to cinematography. Dialogue was appropriate too, only thing that needed a touch up was some of the love scenes between padme and anakin on naboo in ep. 2, but when i rewatched it i see that george was trying to go for a sort of shakesperian romeo and juliet theme (the whole 'forbidden love' thing). George did awesome on all 6 of the movies, and original trilogy only fans are just empjre strikes back lovers. They dont really love ep 4 or 6 all that much. In other words, theyre not star wars fans.
I couldn't agree more, from a cinematic perspective, the prequels are extremely competent, very beautifully shot and rich in detail. A guy called Rick Worley on UA-cam has a terrific video where he shows how Lucas echoed the techniques of many of cinema's greats; Charlie Chaplin, Sergei Eisenstein, Fritz Lang and more. There's a lot of CGI but whether or not you like that is personal taste, it's not inherently bad as some claim. The dialogue between Anakin and Padme is corny but I always thought in the context of the characters it kind of works, they're two very sheltered, socially stunted people navigating a situation neither of them are used to. Having watched Ep. 2 again recently I also love how Padme is just as into Anakin as he is into her. I never picked up on that as a kid haha.
@Croft-95 one thing I picked up from the love fialogue was a sort if shakespearian feel. Not executed in the best way but I get what he was going for. It wasn't totally unwatchable, but in the whole saga it's a small blemish if anything.

The thing about Han shooting first is that when I first saw this movie as a kid, I saw the special edition, and I don’t think I even noticed Greedo shooting. I’m pretty sure I assumed that Han simply shot him. He was a bad guy, he was threatening Han. They still had the shots of Han taking out his blaster, which clearly implies that he was ready to shoot.

My only issue with Lucas was that he never released the original cuts of the Original Trilogy. Besides that I love them man. I love the preqeuls as well. Sure they're not on the level of the originals (my subjective opinion), but this man simply does not deserve the hate he gets/got.
Here is the issue with Lucas. If he had all the technology that he wanted at his disposal SW never takes off IMO. The Special Editions are NOT even his vision for SW. They are just the best he could alter them with the tech in the late 90's and he had to deal with tons of shots from the 70's and 80's that couldn't really be altered. The prequels which were terribly received by critics and audiences starting in 1999 is pretty close to his vision for SW.. As a non Star Wars fan, it has been fascinating over the years, seeing the consensus shift as young fans replace older fans. The prequels were hated at first, but today adults who grew up on the prequels adore it and take it seriously because it's a part of their identity as a nerd. But prequel fans now hate the sequels in the same way. It's like poetry, it rhymes! And one day soon adults who grew up on the sequels will praise them and say they're masterpieces. You may find that hard to imagine, but I found it hard to imagine anyone would like the Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones. But the times they are a-changing!
Well I think that could be true, but remember the OG and the prequels were part of George's vision. Not to say that his cast and crew didn't help of course, but there was a clear direction. The sequels were Disney products and not part of what George intended. You might be right, but I do think the sequels are different in that respect at least.

People forget that Lucas faced major health problems in the 80s, including diabetes and hypertension. He narrowly avoided a heart attack. That's why he slowed down his career, and he probably changed his viewpoint on many things.
Not accurate. He knew he was diabetic in the 60's. It was on the first film he experienced hypertension. He also slowed down after Return of the Jedi because he was burnout and wanted to focus on raising his three kids. People forget how much of a time commitment it was for him with making Star Wars, starting all of his companies, and raising his kids on his own. He rightfully slowed down.

@@davidwallgren7575 But that doesn't mean they should've straight up cancel it, a lot of Star Wars fans still kept up with the EU for all those years. Plus, before Disney brought Lucasfilm, Pablo Hidalgo (a Lucasfilm creative executive) was always referring to the EU when he was asked about specific details about certain characters. Leland Chee, an expert on the EU, was originally tasked with making sure the Clone Wars TV show stayed in line with the "C-canon", which included the EU. For further explanation, "T-Canon" (which is higher than C-canon) was specifically created so that TCW had creative freedom to do whatever, so objectively speaking Seasons 1-6 of TCW was canon to the EU. TCW was also borrowing a lot of ideas from the EU, along with the Mando-verse era anyways. You can't say something didn't mattered if it is still being used for resources.

People reacting to this film really is a good litmus test on how self-aware a Star Wars fan is. Time is a flat circle, and the hate for the newest star wars product is very similar to the hate 20 years ago
As the original trilogy went on George became more open to collaboration and critique with each film Plus Doug Chang and Rick McCallum made it clear that even when George Lucas was making the prequels, he was still open to collaboration. some people considered working on the prequels as "Open Season" for creatives. IT's just that no one tried to collaborate when it came to story because they were intimidated by the idea of arguing with the creator of Star Wars over the story. But there was no fear when it came to art design, effects, editing, and even the acting. Besides, they only said "yes" when the cameras where on.
@@sats2407 Really? Because if you check the featurettes every design was used, if not in one episode in the next or in the clone wars. Also of you actually read the books on the making of the original trilogy instead of going by some random Internet video you will see that it was indeed collaboration, and why wouldn't George have control? He was the director after all and even co directed and edited episode 5 and 6.
He was open to story suggestions. He originally wanted to include Han Solo with the wookiees for example. He decided against it after discussing it with his collaborators. George was always open. It just went through his filter as he's an auteur. Auteurs and directors have final say. That's the way film works.
i dont think people realize how bad starwars fans were back then, before reddit, before social media, before the disney everything. It was a fanbase elitist cliques who all felt like they knew more than the other or something. And it was always starwars vs startrek, that comparison used to get brought up alot more than it does nowadays
While I think the way some of the opinions expressed here come off as rather mean and/or excessive - the lady screaming about who shot first, the skit with George in a wheelchair being forced to rewrite RotS, the hateful people telling George he ruined their childhood (especially that song!) and in general talking down to him as if he's some fool - there are points I agree with here. I think for the sake of history, older cuts of the movies should be available considering how much of an impact the franchise had on pop culture, and I don't think the creative decisions made by Lucas are immune to criticism.
I came into watching this wondering why George Lucas would keep the original movies hidden from the public. I came out of this empathizing with him and understanding exactly why he chose to do that. Now I know who to blame and all I can say to these crazed, obsessive "super fans" is... MACLUNKEY!!!!!
Hey just curious, what do you mean when you say he kept the original movies hidden from the public? Are your referring to the stuff he has been doing since Star Wars? If so, I would give anything to see what he has been up to. People forget what a huge roll he played in how movies are being made today. That big green room they use for the Mando is something George thought of years ago and just didn't have the technology to do it. Bet he has made some really cool stuff. I guarantee had he continued making films, he would have had at least a few more hits.
@@_The1whoknocks He means that the original films, prior to the retconning & CGI implemented in the Special Editions, have never had an official release beyond laserdisc quality.
This "documentary" is basically a bunch of toxic manbabies complaints that George Lucas didn't create the Prequels exactly how they wanted to and that he went back to change his original films, ignoring that a lot of directors do that all the time. All the shit people day about George can be applied to literally anyone, but it's only bad when he does it for some reason.
The Star Wars fandom saddens me. I was once like these guys. But after the Last Jedi and the negativity it got, I disliked being a Star Wars fan and became ashamed of it.
That is a problem that has plagued pretty much every fandom. It’s okay to like and dislike something, just don’t be a bad person about it. You’re not a bad person because you’re a fan of something, it’s just that there are a lot of bad people who just happen to be fans of something. Too many if you ask me, but that’s humanity for you. Things kind of got to the point where Star Wars became one of the things you can’t discuss with others without hell breaking loose. (Along with religion and politics)
Have not seen the docu yet. However, when i watched EP1 as a teen back then, i was pretty disappointed (to much CGI, to Goofy, to clean, also the Special Editions had a fair amount of such "problems") for the most part i did not care about Star Wars after that. Still i have good memories and love for the OT. After watching The Last Jedi and what they did to Luke, this killed something inside me and im sure many people feel a similar way. After the squel Triology, i for sure appriciate the PT and Lucas Vision much more.
The same people who made this are now crying that the disney sequel trilogy is terrible and George shouldnt have sold the trilogy. He sold it because of people like you. You ruined star wars.

There's so much crazy people in this video. The amount of overreaction is insane that it's no wonder he sold SW to Disney, and to be honest I'm glad he did because it only pissed the toxic fans off more and nobody like that deserves any sort of satisfaction.
This documentary is honestly shameful. George is a masterful creative and a directorial genius. It’s honestly sad how people reacted to the prequels. While not perfect films, the story they told was cohesive, in-depth, and fascinating. Not to mention the groundbreaking effects (also, each individual prequel has more practical effects than the entire original trilogy combined) that revolutionized cgi and filmmaking. Some Star Wars fans are really the most pretentious and self absorbed people; being angry with a creator for altering their work post-release. Every creator in history has changed their art, from paintings to novels to films. Only SW fans complain though. The special editions are the films and the prequels are phenomenal. Wish fans could’ve seen that back then and maybe we wouldn’t be stuck with the sequels.
Oh, stop it. The prequels told a good story? Let me guess because you became a big fan of the clone wars cartoon years later? Episodes 1, and 2 are complete garbage. Everything from the acting, to the story, to the PlayStation like effects and lifeless action scenes.. And I live through it. Trust me the fans really disliked them at the time. And we may well see people have a different opinion of the sequels in 20 years the way this is going. Because I never thought I’d see the day pretty much anyone would defend those prequels.
@@dbreiden83080 yes, the prequels told a strong, clear and cohesive story. The plot was very focused and evident with no major contrivances through all three epsiodes as we watch the Phantom Menace slowly rise to power while seducing the chosen one to the dark side; dismantling the Jedi order and republic in his path. I have never watched the Clone Wars television show and I was alive to see all three prequels release into theaters. Only a vocal minority of the fanbase really didn’t like the films; largely years after the fact due to UA-camrs like RLM stating blatantly obvious lies while also being too dumb to even comprehend the basic outline of the plot. Actual intelligent critics like Roger Ebert thoroughly enjoyed the prequels upon their releases. Sorry George actually told a compelling story with themes and motifs; rather than just re-telling the same story over again with plot redundancies such as “palpatine has somehow returned.” The prequels aren’t as well made as the original trilogy, but they have 1000x the amount of heart, character, and creativity than the Disney sequels could even dream of.
@@fabioj2353 "Only a vocal minority of the fanbase really didn’t like the films" If that were true explain the dogshit reviews in 1999 and 2002? I was there buddy that is 100% accurate.. Hell the news media was right there interviewing fans coming out of the movie as they expressed their horror as just how disappointed they were.. In disbelief that Lucas blew it so badly.. Years later Kids that grew up with the prequels rose up to defend them as they became adults.. Now lets be clear I hated the last 2 sequels but watch the same shit happen again as the years go on.. I say this because kids my Nephews age loved them.. If you really think Episode 1 is a compelling story when it features essentially a talking rabbit nobody can understand, gave Obi Wan a bland boring mentor to guide us through a story while Obi Wan mostly hangs out on the ship with zero interesting to do or say congrats.. Oh yes and lets NOT forget the big light saber fight with a cool looking villain that had 1 line of dialogue and we know nothing whatsoever about other than he looks dangerous.. What a story...
@@dbreiden83080 you’re being a bit biased and pretentious. The reviews were simply not “dogshit”, they were largely mixed. If you watch the out of theater reactions the vast majority are positive or mixed; with only a few extreme negative responses. The large portion of people I’ve spoken to or seen reviews of either love them or don’t mind them. Similarly, if you watch reviews of the original trilogy, there were many who had the same negative perspectives. “It’s all special effects! No real acting or story! Dry and terrible dialogue.” The negative responses were just highlighted far more often due to social media and the internet. At least the prequels, whether you like them or not, did not hamper or disrespect the original trilogy or characters that came before. Lucas absolutely did his best to maintain a cohesive story throughout the six films. Also, the point of the first episode isn’t to focus on Obi-Wan. It’s entirely to focus on the dual of the fates and Anakin’s start to his journey. Qui-Gon is a wise and intelligent Jedi who, as we see, isn’t on the council due to his differing perspectives on the force and training. He’s even willing to completely disobey the order to take on Anakin as his apprentice. It’s also clear from the get go that Obi-Wan sides with the order and not his own master; disliking Anakin immediately. “Why do I sense we have picked up another pathetic life form.” “The boy is dangerous they all sense it why can’t you?” It’s called the phantom menace and the final battle is the dual of the fates due to the fact that palpatine is slowly gaining power in the senate to eventually take over; while if Qui-Gon dies, Anakin will absolutely fulfill his destiny of turning to the dark side. Had Qui-Gon survived, Anakin would’ve been allowed to use his emotions and attempt to save the people he loved like his mother and padme. It is Obi-Wan’s/the Jedi’s distaste/distrust for anakin, Palpatine’s now fatherly role for anakin in light of Qui-Gon passing, and the lack of the Jedi’s sympathy and acceptance of emotions like love that causes Anakin to fall to the dark side. Not to mention how amazing the underwater gungan city is, how awesome Naboo is, the entire Pod Racing sequence, and getting to see the Jedi order/Coruscant in their prime. I can accept if you don’t enjoy them but they’re genuinely compelling films and stories.
@@fabioj2353 While I don't agree with your take on the prequels at all I can appreciate your passion for them.. For me as a huge Superman fan in 2006 I loved Superman Returns and was on a bit of an island on that one. At least you got a completed prequel trilogy..
George Lucas was the chief editor on the original Star Wars. He oversaw the entire process and edited the acclaimed gunport sequence himself. His wife Marcia only edited a third of the movie and left to work on another movie before the final edit was even completed. There were two other editors who edited the other 2/3 of the movie. And at first the Special Edition discussion sounds positive. But then getting further into the Special Editions and then the prequels is where we're reminded of the title of this documentary. And also where a lot of these PEOPLE start coming in.
Lucas could’ve avoided it all if he left the original trilogy alone and collaborate with other filmmakers to write the prequels better than what we got.

Star Wars is dead. It’s gone forever. Who killed it? No one in particular, it simply just ran it’s course, like any other franchise. George Lucas is a pretty cool guy. I don’t think he should have to release the original cuts of the OT films. Then again, I don’t think it’s too unreasonable to want HD versions of the OT. The film industry is a business at the end of the day, and George played his cards just right to make a truckload of money. He also made some pretty great films along the way. Sure, he had some missteps, but that doesn’t mean he is a talentless hack. I don’t like the prequels all that much, but I can see why some do.
This was toxic hate before it was a media buzzword. This was the sharknado of prequel hate that fans had to endure because hating on prequels was considered cool by media and internet of the time, that anyone trying to defend the prequels got shouted down and name-called into oblivion. In complete irony, it was considered acceptable to hate on SW and ppl like George Lucas but today, a movie like "The People vs Kathleen Kennedy" would NEVER be allowed or accepted due to "misogyny" and such. Even Simon Pegg - who now calls the SW fandom "very toxic" is here gleefully hating on the prequels and ANYONE who likes them. People like Mr Lucas, Mr Best, Mr Christensen, Mr Lloyd were considered "acceptable targets" and told to "man up and accept criticism" but media and twitter mobs rush to defend the characters like Rey, denouncing ANYONE who has anything negative to say about say, Rey, media quick to scream "misogyny" and such. Think if this film was made directed at Disney and Kathleen Kennedy, how much it would be denounced by media and twitter mobs but back in 2010, it was considered perfectly okay to attack like this. What a difference over a decade has made in what and who is acceptable to "critique" and what is considered to be "hate".

The nostalgia hits , but its over very quickly. I've replayed old school games and thiscis the case where I'm bored after 15 mins because since thst time you've been exposed to better advanced games and products. Fans want that hit like the first time, and SW simply can not deliver. I love star wars as one giant story , Its immense. But I've always said as individual films and shows they don't tend to be executed particually well , but the overarching story over time is fantastic . There are simply a large swath of other franchises & films that are say smaller in scope , but the delivery is solid . Great films u can watch again and again. I find alot of SW lacks a rewarch factor . But it all still contributes to this big story.

@@JamesCarmichael I'm not making a judgement of quality. Personally I agree that the sequels lack vision and are the most hollow trilogy, but that won't stop nerds from being nerds :)
@@MarkArandjus Oh don't misunderstand I completely see where you're coming from. I like being a nerd sometimes, but sometimes (as George would say) "You can go too far." :D
Time doesn't make bad movies good. The prequels are bad movies but fans can grow to accept some things.
Kids who watched the sequels will grow up and then flood social media on how they liked the sequel trilogy.
I don't think it's a case of older fans changing their minds, but more so the kids that first got into Star Wars will do this.
This documentary aged horribly.
The more time passes the worse this gets. Lucas won in the end.

As the original trilogy went on George became more open to collaboration and critique with each film
Plus Doug Chang and Rick McCallum made it clear that even when George Lucas was making the prequels, he was still open to collaboration. some people considered working on the prequels as "Open Season" for creatives. IT's just that no one tried to collaborate when it came to story because they were intimidated by the idea of arguing with the creator of Star Wars over the story.
But there was no fear when it came to art design, effects, editing, and even the acting.

If that were true explain the dogshit reviews in 1999 and 2002? The millions of fans expressing then and now how bad they were? The bottom line is adult SW fans mostly hated those films. Those fans in their 40's and 50's still hate them..

George Lucas was the chief editor on the original Star Wars. He oversaw the entire process and edited the acclaimed gunport sequence himself.
