I really enjoy all the great knowleage you are sharing with us! I found a row of scrapes on the edge of very thick cover the farthest down wind I can get is 15 yd because of a lake! Is that to close to hunt? If i am hidden well?

Rookie hunter! I'm soaking up as much info as possible. This is my season finding an active scrape! I have several mature bucks hitting it in daylight. There aren't any good tree stand site. Its on a deep secluded fence row. You can drive a tractor through then its gnarly.. can I put a ground blind on the fence and bot run everything out of there? Its tight quarters... great sign...not sure how to hunt it
I am a Hunter I have seen scapes and rubs but Trying to find the bucks and doe’s is the hardest part because no one has taught me about hunting So I listen to the experts .when I first started hunting I read if a doe come by and she doesn’t lift up her tail then she telling the buck it’s ok to come through and it worked just being in the right place at the right time a big Ten Pointer walk within 8 steps from where I was sitting on a tree limb I never got the opportunity to shoot it . I was a Cherry 🍒 now the I have been reading and listening to the experts anything has worked Even though I have killed 5 doe’s and two button bucks I am still learning but I will not hunt by myself because if something happens I will end up dying in the woods that’s why it better hunting with someone else
SAR - You are wise to be cautious! Congrats on tagging a lot of venison! The "tail" sign isn't accurate. Does have no reason to protect bucks. Deer to flag or raise their tail and expose the white as a way to notify other deer to be alarmed - a treat may be in the area.
Licking branch is everyhting....great Video!!!! I use a FLAG holder from hardware store for 7 bucks..and I ADD a licking branch to any Mock scrape if one is.not available...and its MONEY...camera goes crazy oct 20th till Nov 15th then seems like scrapes go dead for the breed then they come back to action after turkey day !!!!...new subscriber looking fwd to more info!!!!
Hello Dr Woods, glad you posted. Warm weather coming here in western ny for next week and a half. How much effect will that effect my rut hunt? I took off work 2 weeks for this reason with rut starting but discouraged on the forecast
Weather has minimal impact on rut activity... they only get a few weeks a year, they wont waste it. All you gotta do is put yourself in the right spot. That is what may change due to weather.
Jeremy - Bucks will still be seeking does! You may find more action on north facing slopes, etc., if it's significantly warmer than normal. However, does will still breed on time!

Robert - Neither. He's not gone for good and bucks rarely bed in the same place day after day. The current conditions (wind direction and speed, temperature, recent predator activity, etc.) determine where deer will bed.
Hi mr woods I have a trail camera set up on two scapes here in northern Indiana they is six bucks using them there are two really nice buck fighting on my camera but all at night no day pictures there so many scrape on my property don’t no watch one to hunt ??
Angie - You might scout around the scrapes a tad and try to get closer to the food or cover so there's a better chance of seeing the bucks during daylight! Or hunt there when there's a strong cold front.
Josh - stand height is determined by shot angle. The arrow's path needs to be able to penetration both lungs. So level with the deer is best - I try to stay 20' or so, pending on the topography.
When is the best time to get out and look for scrapes? I’m worried about leaving scent out in the woods. I’m hunting in okfuskee county Oklahoma over a mock scrape I made. I’ve had two of my shooters walk by downwind of the scrape just like you described. I moved my stand but it seems they’ve went nocturnal on trail cam. Thanks in advance for your contribution.

Interesting about the sex ratio in regards to scrapes, I don’t see many scrapes around here but the area I’m in doe’s can only harvested by hunters who won a doe tag in a lottery system and even then its not an additional tag if you shot a doe thats your deer for the year, as a result does seem far more plentiful here than bucks.
Well I finally had bucks start showing up on the property I hunt strangers thing I've ever seen no bucks all year and then one day you check the trail cam and bam 6 different bucks in one group any thoughts on that one grant all but one were immature bucks one was a sure enuff mature buck. Have yet to see a scrape or a horned Bush and I've looked all over the 127 acres I have to hunt
Bobbyjoe - It's likely food sources changed in the area or the level of disturbance on the neighboring properties. Did acorns start falling on the 127 acres where you hunt?

This is best determined by the amount of quality browse available during the late summer and late winter! If there are more deer than quality browse (quality forage is heavily browsed these times of year) the herd health will improve if some does are removed.
Then only reason I ever clear the area from under my grape Vines is to give that spot the attention After it doesn't matter deer hit hem some times the night i set them up hours after I left. Scent. That's how hey communicate. But he ground portion is vital as well because a deer has a gland in their foot that is basically their finger print the scent from that is of no other deer. That's how tracking dogs work.
.Did u know their different types of scrapes ,there's a breeding scrape and territory scrape .. Any time you see a rub line their is a scrape near , never go near any scrape if u can help it , , hunting mature deer takes a mature hunter it oh times.? get that close to the scrape ,then smell the dirt ,look for hoof scratches across the scrapes ,u can also throw a few small twigs ontop of a scrape after a days hunt ,check to see if there clean away next hunt ,to know they are still active ,but smell the dirt for amonia ,doe piss ,you have a hot scrape and it's on and rutting.
Why do deer dig and eat Hemlock roots,these look like scrapes but are not,I watched a doe today dig and eat hemlock roots,we find a lot of that in the Adirondacks...
In most of the Adirondacks is starvation alley for deer - as is most closed-canopy forests. I've worked a lot in the Adirondacks and the quality of habitat there in most places makes me sad. However, it can be improved and quality habitat and deer produced!
Jason - Scrapes are often located where two habitat types come together. If you hunt in a large contiguous block of timber, scrapes can be a bit tougher to find.

How high up in tree is best close to scraps?

Jason - Bucks are seeking does now and rarely working scrapes. I'd suggest hunting travel corridors this week and next.

@Jason Nester look around pinch points, saddles, around the head of a draw, follow a deer trail long enough and you'll run into a scrape
