Worked on the F-22 for 7 years. This was the Second balloon kill, First A/A Kill, and i was sitting under the wing for the first one. I was working at Hot Pits (refueling on the ground while the aircraft is running) at Langley AFB in 2009, and a Mylar balloon from the BX, started to float over the west ramp. I was under the left wing when I heard my A man call out “uhhh.. we have a balloon coming.” I peeked under the flaps, and sure enough it was about 20-30 feet in the air, floating toward one of the other jets. Pilot calls “surfaces clear” and I tucked in deep under the wing, you didn’t want your head anywhere near a moving flap and/or horizontal stab. “Clear.” I called while I’m kneeling and keeping myself grounded on refueling attachment. He tilted the stick back and pointed the thrust up at the balloon, which went immediately from a limp, crumply thing to a taut ball, apparently the jet exhaust made it expand fully and leak more air, because this time it floated a good 150 feet into the air, and landed in the grass next to the runway, where our Hot Pit Super picked it up. We all joked and called it a ground to air kill on a balloon, but when it comes down to it, we saved aircraft from a lot of time consuming and expensive maintenance.

Yeah, regarding the balloon, F-22 along with F-15 are the only current US fighters that can reach 60,000 feet. Also I imagine with it's thrust vectoring the Raptor especially comes in handy given how wide the turning radius would be at that altitude, due to the air being so thin at 60k feet, I imagine even normally quite maneuverable aircraft would start to feel like bricks
also, they didn't know the real purpose of the balloon, it could be a harmless loose meteorology balloon or a tricky attack with unknown devices onboard and stealth became handy against it

My boss is a former air force pilot, he confirmed the reason they used the F-22 is because it is the only fighter in the US inventory capable of flying combat maneuvers at the altitude that balloon was at. Cool fact, they couldn't use radar or infrared seekers to track the balloon since it gave off no heat and was invisible to radar, so the pilot had to manually aim his sidewinder via the bore sight with the seeker head turned off to hit the balloon, basically like an unguided rocket. That fighter squadron already has patches made up with a popped balloon and Winnie the Pooh on it with the words Float Around and Find Out around the perimeter.
So the F-22 has the RCS of a bumblebee and the F-22 was sent to shoot down the balloon for a multitude of reasons that include the mentioned high altitude celling, advanced sensors to detect the balloon and the ability to quickly dispatch of it without much problem.

When I was a kid, in like 2004ish an F-22 would do transonic flights over my house every once in a while. I think they were coming from Arnold Air Force Base. At the time I thought the sonic booms were pretty annoying, but as I've gotten more into aviation I look back at it pretty fondly.
Highly unlikely it was breaking the sound barrier over your house. USAF jets aren't allowed to do that as it can cause damage to windows, etc. Chances are it was just loud as the F-22 and F-35 are extremely loud. Edit: The only times they are allowed to break the sound barrier over land would be in an emergency situation, and when they have very specific authorization from a higher ranking officer to do so. Also, when training over water they're allowed to do it, and no authorization is required over water.
@@SymeonPhronema I agree they weren't likely intending to hit mach, but it was 2000 and some hotshot pilots were probably willing to get closer to that line than they ought to. I'm pretty sure they were real sonic booms though. Usually when the jets went over head it would be like very nearby rolling thunder, slowly fading away into the distance, occasionally though there would also be a massive boom that was just over in an instant, like a shot from a rifle.
Supposedly f22 RCS is equivalent to a metal marble, f35 RCS metal golf ball. Who knows if that’s true, but either way they should both be very hard to detect. f35 should have a massive advantage in situational awareness though.

We do use the f22 for homeland patrol. That's their primary function. So it makes sense to use them. They also have super cruise so they can cover more ground quickly without using as much fuel.
@@johnxina6823 So they didn’t updated it to have thrust vectoring… Lame. 😒 FCS has been in the F-22 Mod for a long time, it’s just an AOA limit on the ailerons and elevators.
I could be wrong, but I remember hearing in some other UA-cam video that the F22 has a radar cross-section equivalent to a bumblebee while the F35 has one closer to a hummingbird. I think it was something along those lines. I also recall that some radars can tell roughly where it is, but actually locking onto it, especially for long-range radar guided SAMs, to fire missiles at it is damn near impossible.
your DCS F/A-18C is a Lot 20, which means it's the latest and greatest of all the Charlies, it's from the early 2000s, last batch before the US Navy switched to Rhinos.. At least that was the initial reasoning from ED when ppl asked for ILS rather than ICLS etc.. "We are modelling a specific model, US Navy Lot 20, and as such it does not have ILS".. i mean later on they changed their narrative a bit when they released the LITENING Pod rather than ATFLIR first (specifically a Spanish Charlie Hornet LITENING, coincidentally after announcing the Viper, which also can carry a LITENING pod?).. So yea, while we have a Spanish LITENING, we still don't have ILS.. I'm not sure if it's still supposed to be a Lot 20 Charlie tbh, but at least that's what it initially supposed to be (and majority of systems probably still reflect that).

Now for a good time, get Growling Sidewinder in the F-22 with fangs out and let’s see how the Mig-21 fares.
Oh hell yeah! I knew I liked you for a reason, a fellow lover of the F-14 Tomcat. Loved it since it came out…which was first flown in my childhood.
Drewski I was born the same year as you and I'm pretty sure I got the exact same book at my book fair. I remember showing my uncle the Tomcat and telling him that was my favorite jet.
You should fight growling sidewinder one day. That would be so cool
I have - he destroyed me like 15 times in a row LOL
@@OperatorDrewski that man is too good. He could probably shoot down an f-22 with a Huey
@@Gambler1-1 I imagine he eventually will
@@OperatorDrewski You should also try longshot as well. He is marginally better than GS in some ways.
@@NationChosenByGodis he? I've seen them flying together on the same side(against advanced enemy) and if I remember correctly Longshot got shot down more times than GS.
My grandmother's cousin who I had the great fortune of meeting was one of the lead project managers of the f14 tomcat.
The F22 was and is a deterrent. Any time an adversary knows F22s are in the theatre they won't send up any fighters.
Please spend more time in DCS, Seriously. You are so much fun to watch in this world.
I'm like 90% sure the book he mentions was my first introduction to the Raptor too. And the F-22 also dethroned the Tomcat as my favorite jet fighter.
Very cool. Ha ! realized I was on the edge of my seat leaning as you were doing tight turns. 😂
Thank you so much for making these videos drewski, you got me into dcs and inspired me to save for 2 years for a 1000 dollar pc, I just have to say thank you! I now fly the froggy, f-16, f-18, su-27/j-11a, the f-5, and even the a-10c. Your videos really helped me learn tactics, not just basic flying.
im really interested in getting it! i take it you would recommend?
Which one?
Drewski pulling out the Holdo Manuever to take out bomber! :D :D
F22 popping a balloon: "done such heroic feats... fought such dangerous foes"
I think I just saw the new meme for this week among viper and eagle drivers.
Well, at least them poor raptors finally got some.
It's about time. Now they need to update the mod to have the Spy Balloon marking
Some community liveries have already been made. The F-22 mod is no longer receiving updates unless to keep it working in the current DCS version
I remember playing F-22: Total Air War as a reasonably young kid (about 11 perhaps?). F-22 will always have a place in my heart xD
Is DCS VR?? Because that would be sik!! Good job man keep it up
Absolutely stunning aircraft, I didn't even finish reading the title when I saw the notif when I saw "F-22" and just *neuron activation*
Flew by the apartment buildings I live in!’ Made me cry tears of joy.
We have a USAF base and Naval base here in Guam. I hear or see lots of jets like F16s zoom by everyday.
oh the foes that this thing faced... a baloon xD /s in all seriousness great plane, happy to see you get back (maybe for longer) to dcs!
1:10 Tomcat’s 4 ever, sad story that they are out of service, but still they were the best navy jet looking ngl 👌
man, been waiting so long for another dcs vid, thanks so much keep it going
Brings back memories of F22 Lightning 3
If true, it’s second kill was a “TicTac” UFO in Northern Alaska. So it’s an extreme spread of kills that it was never designed to take out.
Thumbnail got me, thought it was a growling sidewinder vid😂
This is some nice timing. F22 just got its first alien kill over Canada.
The radar cross-section of a F-22 is the same as a sparrow (the bird).
Damn that kill with the MiG-21 was insane.
We do use the f22 for homeland patrol. That's their primary function. So it makes sense to use them. They also have super cruise so they can cover more ground quickly without using as much fuel.
The Air Force doesn't care about fuel usage unless it's about range.
Since publishing this video, the F-22 has doubled it's air to air kills, truly incredible what a little publicity on youtube does.
The F-22 is Basically a super maneuverable stealth F-15…
its the same version just fcs override
@@johnxina6823 I thought they had the override fcs in the previous version. Did they update it for the vectoring?
@@sentinel8185 they never updated it in like 3 years just turn it in boom
@@johnxina6823 So they didn’t updated it to have thrust vectoring… Lame. 😒
FCS has been in the F-22 Mod for a long time, it’s just an AOA limit on the ailerons and elevators.
The part where you see the F22 coming XD that was epic cinematography XDDDDDD
I could be wrong, but I remember hearing in some other UA-cam video that the F22 has a radar cross-section equivalent to a bumblebee while the F35 has one closer to a hummingbird. I think it was something along those lines. I also recall that some radars can tell roughly where it is, but actually locking onto it, especially for long-range radar guided SAMs, to fire missiles at it is damn near impossible.
Correct, radar can see exactly where stealth fighters are but locking on to them is pretty hard.
Drewski finically uploads on DCS again let’s goooooo
13:20 that gave me fucking goosebumps man lmao. Major Ace Combat enemy boss vibes
Right as you were approaching first merge I was like SLOW DOWN!!!! xD
Good fight.
Was literally just thinking about old dos based flight Sims and how far we've come.
Mr Drewski, when dogfighting in the F-22 don't forget to use FCS override
I just randomly came across this video. And being from Guam I immediately noticed all the hotels that’s a pretty detailed map 😂
11:20 "your on your own noble, carter out"
Technically, there's an f22 flight sim from the late 90s for pc. It's super old tho. Same company made a sim for Abrams and Comanche
your DCS F/A-18C is a Lot 20, which means it's the latest and greatest of all the Charlies, it's from the early 2000s, last batch before the US Navy switched to Rhinos..
"IT'S STARSCREAM!!!"
That was a great dogfight with the Flanker.
That f-18 is an aggressor model used in training. I have seen them around NAS Oceana.
