I wish you’d continued on from here. The one thing I’m nervous about as I consider getting an Octatrack is whether I’ll be able to play in midi performance from an external synth. Basically, I want to set a click or beat and record keys over it (not step by step, live) and have it loop back (quantized) while I turn the knobs on the synth. Of all the Octatrack videos on UA-cam, I haven’t seen one person demonstrate that, if indeed it’s possible.
have you been able to figure this out?
@@breadzeppelin__ Yes, but it's just not good at all with polyphony. The thing about my Octatrack is, two days ago it basically stopped working. It was crashing (no audio, dim orange lights, unresponsive) within a minute of start-up. After four and a half months of use, I think it's a brick. I've contacted support.

The first time you mention a midi channel (10), you mean global midi, right? Sounds quite confusing when you subsequently start using the word channel regarding the individual pieces of hardwire.

How are you connecting all your hardware Midiwise? Is a Midi hub 100% necessary? Is midi thru an option even where you want to send different sequences to different hardware? Why do I have so many questions? Why can't I stop asking them......?
Hi! The splitter is completely redundant if all your midi devices have a thru (all but the last one in the chain). Unfortunately, it is rarely the case; only high-end devices have a thru these days. So, in my case because the Volca Keys, the MS-20 and the Electribe E2 have no midi thru, I'm forced to use the splitter. I'm also sending MIDI clock to the TC Looper, Line 6 M9 and M5 but for that purpose I utilize the MIDI out on the MonoMachine and the Moog Slim Phatty (they're not sending any notes from their Midi Out, just the clock). And finally, If all your devices are set to receive all on different midi channels you're all good.
Hi hi. Thanks for the reply. My Matrix 12 has midi thru and is going into a Kenton USB solo. Nothing registers on the Kenton so can't control the ARP 2600. Understand the thru concept of daisy chaining but wanted to check set up differences. Probs something geeky on the Kenton I need to change! Thanks again!

Hi again. You have multiple midi controllers in your setup right? And you can record midi in from them into the OT right? If that's the case have you got a midi merger merging the midi in from your controllers to the OT midi in?

Do any of these devices sync with wifi or Bluetooth?
I understand audio tracks can be controlled through midi channels according to the midi channel setup and midi control reference. In what cases, at the same time, do the audio tracks send midi data to midi out? I don't think of any application.
I believe audio tracks do not send midi to midi out. Only MIDI tracks do.
Hi, I'm thing of getting a Kenton midi thru box. I want to control many synths that only have midi in. However, I want each synth to receive different midi notes to play different melodies from the octatrack midi out. Will a midi thru box do this for me or will it simply duplicate one melody to all the thru outputs to all the synths midi in? Thank you.
A midi thru box will do the trick, but you need to set them up on different MIDI channels channels. My currentsetup is Channel 1: MS-20, Channel 2-8: Monomachine tracks, Channel 9: Korg Volca, Channel 10: Moog, Channel 11: Analog RYTM Auto Channel
hi, thanks for the tips, there is still something I don't get, not sur the OT can do this : I want the octatrack to midi record notes I'm playing on my synth ( a prologue but could be anything) and then play them back on the synth , it's on midi channel 1 track 1. so If I want the OT to hear the notes , I have to set auto channel or track 1 channel to channel 1... and so when I play notes it also plays on the OT (non midi) track one ( usually the Kick) , off course I don't want that, is there a solution ? trhanks in advance
Two options really: 1) remove midi channel one from track one in the MIDI / Channels / Trig CH 2) uncheck "audio note in" in the MIDI / Control menu. I generally set my auto channel to something other than 1, because so many instruments respond on channel 1 by default that it can generate issues.
@@LateNightBeatsOfficial thanks a lot for your answer. from what i've found it seems that you can not control the midi tracks of the OT with an external keyboard... so the input channels are just for the Non midi tracks... which means I need to add another machine ( digitakt for ex) to midi record what I play on the keyboard and then sample to OT. .. or I need to learn to play with OT keybed
Of course, you can control the MIDI tracks with an external keyboard. I'm showing it in this video. I thought you had an issue with the track one tracking your midi channel. Maybe I misunderstood your comment, can you explain what the problem is once again?
@@LateNightBeatsOfficial Ok so I don't get it. my synth / keyboard is set on channel 1, both to send and receive. I want it to trigger and be controlled by midi track 1, so I do a midi cable loop between the synth and the OT ( out to in and in to out) . I go to midi track 1 "source" page and set channel to channel 1, the OT is triggering the synth right... from now everything is ok. Then I go to channel page and set track 1 to midi channel 1. ( that's where I get confused as there is no possibility to assign only the midi track 1 to channel 1 I have to assign the track 1 ( or should I use the auto channel instead ? ) . When I press a touch on the synth keybed, it triggers only the "non midi"track 1, not the midi one . i'll watch the video again
@Late Night Beats Ok got it;, I have to use the auto channel, which i didn't want to do ( as the keyboard is also the synth..) but it should work if I uncheck the "receive note" box hopefully ( then I hope the midi track will still be able to receive notes...) will try next time . thanks a lot for your videos and your answers
Hello - I am quite a newbie when it comes to midi. I have bought an iconnectmidi 4 and want to use my matrixbrute to control both the analog four and digitone. I have tried watching your iconnectmidi tutorial but cannot get this set up too work. How would you do this as I cannot get this to work and I've spent a good half of the day trying to figure it out :'D. Greatly appreciate if you are able to know a simple solution :)
Can the Matrixbrute work as a sequencer? If yes, do you really need the iConnect; isn't it enough to connect them all via midi thru?

Question about OT and midi, does OT support polyphonic midi? Can you record chords into the OT?
Hey Zooloo! I haven't seen of your awesome jams in a while, are you coming back to recording? OT has a four-voice polyphony on MIDI but it's limited by the restrictions of the trig architecture. This means that when changing chords from a MIDI keyboard you'll have to press all the notes of the chords again (and effectively retrigger the envelopes on your midi instrument); you can't use pedal notes. For this reason it lends itself more towards step sequencer use than live midi looping.
Hey :) ... yes I'm coming back to recording, I've been busy with other things for a while but I'm trying to get back into it. I was considering reducing my setup to one sequencer, as engine does midi sequencing but I don't use it for midi... My Engine is very powerful but perhaps OT can do most of what I need
The OT excels at short, powerful MIDI sequences; the biggest thing for me is deep CC implementation, 3 CC-compatible LFO's and a powerful arpeggiator. It doesn't do parameter slide and you can't import MIDI over USB: you have to sequence it by hand. Looking forward to seeing more of your jams; they were truly awesome!
Do you know how can i record midi notes in a way when pattern 1 is finished, recording continues in pattern 2 and so on...?
Yeah, just chain the patterns by pressing pattern and multiple pattern trigs at once (e.g. if you press pattern and trigs 1, 2 and 3 the patterns will cycle between them). I did that here: ua-cam.com/video/_olLhNF-XOc/v-deo.html. Keep in mind that there is no way to seamlessly duplicate pattern 1 into pattern 2 when playing, though: you need to have patterns already set up.

Hello. Thanks for the information! I have my Prophet 6 and Moog set up to receive and record midi from my master keyboard. Great! The bummer is i also want to trigger my tr8 but cant seem to figer it out.
Master keyboard midi out to midi in Octatrack, Midi out to Pro 6 channel 16, midi thru to Moog channel 2. Ive run out of thrus... Sad face

Yeah, any type of a midi splitter will do the trick. I personally use iConnect MIDI 4+ for all my midi routing, but really, any thru box will do the trick!
im still confused and my midi keyboard is a korg m3 so idk which mode to use oh gawd it's so complicated plz halp
I need to connect my octatrack to my tr8, how do I get it to transmit just clock and not play the sounds of my tr8 with the octatrack sequencer? I want to use the tr8 sequencer
Select a different MIDI channel on the TR8 and don't send midi to that channel from the OT; that should do the trick.

I don't know the TR8 but I assume that its clock is set to external? Also on the OT in the MIDI sync menu, you have select sync + transport to SEND.

+Martin P Thanks. Try switching octaves all the way up on your midi keyboard (C-1 reference in the manual), set up the auto channel and make sure your keyboard communicates on the same channel. If this doesn't work, go ahead and fool around with the midi setup.

dude great vid. id suggest using ch 9 upwards since channels 1 to 8 will clash with audio midi control when you try doing midi learn for example. this drove me crazy till i figured it out!
is it possible to automate patch changes via trigs? i can't for the life of me crack this one. great channel btw!
By patch changes do you mean program changes on your external gear? If that's the case, unfortunately the answer is no. Program changes are "Part" specific and they are hidden in the PLAYBACK submenu (double click), hence they can't be parameter locked.

ok just an example..lets say I want a sidechain effect on a sequence I made with the OT for my Virus. And I want to do it with plocks on the velocity, will the virus accept this?
Sure, as long as your midi gear responds to velocity, you can p-lock any parameter on any page (no slide trigs and no cross-fader, though). What's more, you can assign a random LFO to velocity for some really crazy results :)

My setup is for live as all units are in sync daisy chained
OT is Master.
I need the Keystep to trigger the Digitakt Digitone and A4 through the OT.
I have a Thru box
If I put the Dt Dn and A4 to thru box
Thru out to Keystep In
Keystep out to OT In
Is this correct ?
I wouldn't use a thru-box at all as all boxes have a midi thru. How I would set it up is setting the Keystep to a fixed channel that is the same as the AutoChannel on the Octatrack (Midi settings). Then set the other devices to other midi autochannels (e.g. DT 10, DG, 11, A4 12) and set those channels on different midi tracks on the OT, so that e.g. when you select midi track 5 on the OT, it triggers DT and track 6 it triggers DG. Hope this makes sense.

Hello and thank you ever so much. Well it wasn’t a cake walk bcoz funnily the OT would act on only certain of the 8 midi channels.
So after trial and retrial I managed the OT to get the Keystep to read Dkt on 6
Ditn on 3 and A4 on 5.
All other channels would bleed and all the 3 units would play together.

hey man, so I got my bs2 and system 1 connected to octatrack via midi and they are both working fine so am able to set trigs but for some reason I can't get the cc to work for either of them?!? I've followed all the necessary steps but still nothing.. I get to the midi learn pop up but it's like the octatrack is not hearing the changes or is it these particular synths? I'm stumped. I don't understand while there is obviously midi being sent and received why it's not working.. any idea?
Might be a stupid question, but have you tried Function + Knob Press in CTRL1 menu? It's necessary to activate CC communication from the OT.
ok so I just did that in the first effects page (without double clicking) and bam! it worked! in another tutorial it said you have to go into the 2nd menu and midi lean on the synth.. that didn't work for me for some reason but it works now! thank you for your help :) now my midi plocking begins! oh and conditional trigs!! but I don't think they work with midi? will play around. Thanks again
