I've had a Digitakt and Digitone for over a year, just sold an MPC with the intention of getting an Octatrack. This is the ONLY time I've forced myself to really watch a ton of tutorials prior to making the purchase. This one was brilliant, and probably the best tutorial for using the OT like an advanced version of the DT. I went down the EZBot rabbit hole a bit too early without looking into this kind of basic workflow!
This isn't just a tutorial. It's also a tutorial on how to make a tutorial! More valuable than anything I've been read, told, watched or sold! Thankyou 🙌
I know the tutorial is old but it’s the most clear tutorial I’ve followed would you be able to do a tutorial on parts as most forums I go on everyone has issues getting there head round it please if possible I don’t mind if it’s a Patreon only tutorial as that’s what I’m stuck on
Thanks so much for this very comprehensive tutorial. I'm getting an Octatrack next week. Even though I have many other Elektron boxes, I must say the Octatrack is in a league of its own.
As a new owner and having now watched many OT videos, I can say with confidence that any new owner should use this as their first tutorial. Excellent work .. plans to do any more? ❤
ahh gotcha .. I’ll be watching the rest of your content soon. Parts still confuse me a bit; I think I can learn scenes ok, but if you ever felt the drive to do another OT video, your take on Parts would be epic ❤
Mine will arrive today. A used mk2 Octatrack. I will approach with an open mind and just flow with it. Thank you for the positive and quite clear introduction.
Thanks Paul. I am planning one where I go into now taking the song we made and replacing the bass with the Bass Station II running in and recording and live slicing/glitching the audio, and also the A/B slider and all it can do.
Wouldnt it be possible to use the same track for multiple different hits that don’t share a trig to save tracks, or do you just want the option of sound design control for each sample?! Great Tute thanks 🙏🏻:)
Does the Octatrack have a loud powerful output ? What makes this sampler better than using Ableton, besides not looking at a screen all day? It looks for sure interesting, but time consuming.
It has a normal output, as expected. It can''t be compared to Ableton because Ableton is a DAW and Octatrack is a physical mixer with knobs and buttons designed to be the centerpiece of a setup with other physical gear that Octatrack controls, samples from and remixes, if you use it to its full potential. It is FAR more time consuming than Ableton, infinitely so. But you get a different sound from it, a different performance, a new take on your music. It can take away the creative paralysis of Ableton with a million ways to go.
@@Digiphex I am just curious about how you can say it has a different experience than working with a DAW like Ableton? I mean is the sound different or do the sequences come out more interesting? I mean what is it? Less is more? I am really seriously curious because it isn't cheap and it only has 8 tracks and 4 audio-outs. I mean I used to own back in the days an Emu SP1200 and that was and is known for its punch and sampling sound color from its analog /DA conversions. Thanks
Great tutorial - however I think that, although it is expanding on the topic, you should swiftly demonstrate re-sampling, just so people can understnad how easy it is to basically downmix your multi track drums, and free 4 tracks for whatever you might want to use these later on.
@@Digiphex I always felt people don't show enough how awesome it is to produce entire tracks with OT. OFC, we record stuff to DAW, but there are tracks that can be simply bounced, also, not many arranger tutorials. Also, LFO's - 3 audio, MIDI lfos - we all know they are there, but rarely we see how powerful this can be, especially MIDI LFO. I mean OT is extremely deep instrument, you can dedicate hours of videos to one topic only, i am just throwing ideas out there. And yeah, i think it will fit nicely if you get your SH 101 to play as a thru or a pickup machine. BTW I love your work and BOC/ Apex Twin recreations.
Bought a used MK2 yesterday! This is my first tutorial on the beast, thanks! Is there some way to start the next slice exactly at the end of the previous? I imagine moving the cursor to the right always eats up a bit of the waveform (between end of previous and start of new slice). Cheers
Enjoy your Octatrack. Yes when you select from the menu to make a new slice here, there are other methods of placing slices but I don't have my OT with me at the moment so I can't say exactly.
@@gdrdm You might benefit as a beginner the last part of my Armando 303 Octatrack video where I go into live recording what you are doing and then looping and playing it. I tried to explain it in a simple way, much easier than the manual which is good but you have to jump around in the manual which is the problem with it.
@@Digiphex Thanks! I'm surprised that after years of reading about how difficult the OT is I'm actually finding it quite straightforward (so far). Haven't got to live recording/looping yet so I'll check your video out for sure! Cheers again
it just occured to me that *slicing* may be cognate to German "schlitzen", as in translation of Jack the ripper, "der Schlitzer". That said, let'er rip!
I bought a few months I studied a few months I figured it out, but then I bought akai liv2, guys this elektron just sounds bad, and there is nothing in it unique or that can not do akai, I fell for the tales of mystery octatrack but it's all nonsense, to write quality music is akai, alas!
But I can do anything on the Akai and a million times more with just a Keystep and Ableton Live. It isn't the capability sometimes, it is the format that inspires you. You'll probably get tired of the Live 2 format in a few years and you will need something to refresh your creativity.
@@Digiphex I've been using an akai mpc1000 for over 10 years, because it is have a nice fat sound, and the elektron sounds like crap, between the two. Sorry!!! It would have been much better if it was a tutorial about how to make a tutorial about how to make a tutorial about a tutorial.
This is the best beginners tutorial I have watched. Thank you!

the best tutorial for beginners
You are a great teacher thank you - returning to the octatrack after a while so really helpful please do more!

So clear dude thank you
Thanks a lot for this major quality tutorial
Love your tutorials! So clear and easy to follow. Will there be more tutorials on Octatrack?
Yeah, would be awesome would a tutorial like this with other machines and midi
Yes, he put out one today!
Thank you for the well crafted tutorial! I joined your Patreon. I hope you make more Octatrack tutorials!

I did enjoy this❤
Great teacher!
Just got an octa mk11. These are by far the clearest and we'll paced tutorials. And they dont make you feel like a new born monkey
We might need a video about that Tuss template
@Chris Moore Oh yes, Octatrack random LFO to the filter width, LFO to pitch! Has me going already.
Really clean tutorial, thankyou!
Great one thank you have nice day🎶🎼🎶🎼🎶
Very clear, thank you!
thank you now i know how to slice :)
Great stuff. This is applicable to Mk1 I hope?
When playing your imported samples chromatically does the speed of the sampme change when plating higher or lower keys from the root note
Marco Lazovic mate :D

Fantastic. This video was super helpful!

Yes you could and I thought did share the track for open and closed hat or at least I usually do.
Could you reupload your Summer Breeze cover video? I liked it a lot, but it's not available anymore :(
You are too kind.

can any sample be assigned to each track/slot/buffer by an external midi controller instead?
I haven't tried that but there is a list of Octatrack controls that can be done via MIDI keyboard in the manual.
in which use cases would you choose the Octatrack over the Akai Force?
Im 1:10 in and I can already tell your channel is a EZ sub.
F that backround tho lmaooo
Great tutorial
Not sure if I've made the best or worst decision of my life by purchasing the Octatrack in 2023 butill find out in a few days when it arrives.
Probably neither but if you want to mix devices and remix live, add effects, mangle samples, and perform live, you will find it is the best there is.
How's it going?? I bought the Anolog Rhythm mkii and sent it back
Great tutorial - however I think that, although it is expanding on the topic, you should swiftly demonstrate re-sampling, just so people can understnad how easy it is to basically downmix your multi track drums, and free 4 tracks for whatever you might want to use these later on.
Great idea. My next video was to mix down, replace the bass with a real synth, convert the bass to a MIDI out track.

where do you have set the enveloppe design for the filter?
Hit FX1 again for another page of control of the filter effect. You see ATK and DEC for the filter envelope.
ahhh got it. Thank you. I like the style and patience your videos are made. Great stuff. Thank you.@@Digiphex
YAAAAZ PLEEEZ!
FYI- You don't have to click FUNC->NO,NO,NO,NO etc to clear a name at the naming screen. Just click FUNC->CLEAR
Thanks. I also mentioned that FUNC and holding NO down does it if you want the whole thing gone.
