Does program change work with other synths that aren’t Elektron?
@@whendoesthisend You have to test that out I suppose. I haven't found a box that is directly compatible yet.
@@whendoesthisend yea often times. But it's not really the same. Usually it changes presets.

This vid came at the perfect time! I've had the Digitakt for a while and can find my way around it pretty good. I got the Octatrack a few weeks ago and have them and other synths sync'd via a midi through box (Kenton). I've got a few ideas down, but changing the pattern from the Octatrack and having other things respond to it was kinda confusing me.
I should probably RTFM more, but I'm mainly a guitarist and I don't need a manual to show me how to crunch out riffs! Haha!.

Thanks for this! 🙌 Have been trying to figure out pattern changes across all boxes for a long time.. the midi ch for program changes was wrong 😄 One little question tho.. if the Octatrack is midi master, can it send swing information to the tempo on the other boxes? I can’t get swing to work at all if master clock comes from OT 🤔

No that issue has been solved. Also you could use microtime to move the first step forward by 1 microstep to fix it too

Hi there ! Great tutorial. I'm currently using my Digitone as an audio interface (not ideal, I know but my Focusrite died on me for no reason). How would you go about communicating midi from an external keyboard => to a digitone => then sending this signal to Ableton ?

Excellent tutorial! Will the Digitakt (Digitone or Syntakt) stay in RECORD mode when starting via the Octatrack? Please check with both Audio and MIDI recording please. In the forums everybody is saying this is not possible and the reason why I’m holding off purchasing the Digitakt. Thanks for the video.

Thank you for the fast reply! Before I pull the trigger on the Digitakt: you can arm record the Digitakt while it’s waiting for the midi clock start message from ANY master sequencer (not just the Octatrack)? Someone on Elektronauts said this, and I quote: “What I usually end up doing is just activating live record while a sequence is already playing (it’s not necessary to stop recording before punching in). This method is not quite as slick as synced live recording though because you often have to wait for your sequence to loop back around, which takes time…” Does this sound right? Or does this only apply when x-bar count in is enabled? Thanks again.
Haha, it seems I did not set this up correctly 😹 My goal: TR-09 sends a clock to the OT, so the OT should start to play when I start the TR. Meanwhile, I want to my OT to send midi to my Monotribe. What I ended up with: Montribe plays the midi trigs when I press start on OT. But when I press start on the TR, the OT would start to play, but I can't hear the Monotribe anymore. Probably some conflict with the channels ? 🤔

Yes, set the keyboard to the auto channel. Do not use “auto” set to a number
Golden! Is it possible to record the output of a synth track from ableton and record directly into Digitakt to sample? Similar to how you sample the output of your external synths directly into Digitakt? Cheers
Yes but it will be in MONO and it can only record for 33 seconds. You could just bounce the file to 48k/16bit and copy it over to the Digitakt. It will still be mono but the files can be as long as 6 minutes.

How can I get my encoder knobs on my OT to not affect my syntaks parameters after I’ve done this? For example, I’ll be on track 7 on my OT messing with the balance and I’ll notice it also affecting the base filter parameter on track 7 of the Syntak. Thanks 🙏

Hi EZ! Thank you for the vid! bigtime fan here :) i use octa to program change a digitakt2 and two syntakts. I've read some reddit posts and gave it all i could to try to get them to change patterns in an orderly fashion, however i keep getting async problems where the slave boxes changes patterns to late (as in, they take two bars or more to change instead of the 16/16 i've set on the octa)

I've set every single pattern on all the boxes to have the same master length, and same change length, and on the octa patterns i've set the change scale to 16/16 for every pattern. could it be that because some of the tracks on the slave boxes have half time scale set that they react differently to incoming program changes? How do you have it set up??

ok so i read another bunch of threads and turned out that when i set all the pattern scale settings to NOT per track and to have the exact same settings, they all keep sync.
however this completely defeats the 8 pages of the digitakt 2 since the other boxes go up to max 64. kinda bummed out

Set the out channel on your device to match the auto channel on the Syntakt. Do not use the channel called auto, give it a number

I'm running into an issue with this using my syntakt to control the model samples. The samples is playing back a guitar loop with a length of 64 at half scale. The syntakt is at 64 normal scale. There's a delay from the samples during the pattern change, is this due to the scale difference and is there a workaround?
You have to set them to the same change length or master pattern length
Do you ever have latency issues chaining the MIDI like that instead of using a splitter?
Never :)
But the real problem is programs that send pattern change at the start of a sequence vs programs that send pattern change at the end. Or chaining multiple boxes with cascading program changes (necessary in some cases such as sequencing externally). Or different msb/lsb/bank/pgm counting/division. The list goes on... I sure hope midi 2 is more robustly defined, or universally configurable. The current state of affairs where everyone is left to implement their own translation of midi messages sucks if you want to use disparate manufacturers. In more ways than just program change.
Can't argue that one bit. MIDI is a disaster in it's current state. Don't get me started on TRS (A) vs TRS (B)
Why do none of these videos never talk about the Audio cable routing? I am new to setting up my OT + DT + Peak, I got the midi all routed fine and can see they're all synced up from that perspective, but I can only hear each instrument when my headphones are connected to that specific box, I can't hear anything but the metronome through the OT.

When using a midi input (oxi one, keystep, Ableton etc) with auto channel, does it hook up to Octatrack MIDI in (still set to not receive transport/clock/program change), and all the instruments still get it? Or do you need to have something like a midi track selected on the Octatrack because we're not midi thru-ing the octatrack (it's still master), it plays Octatrack MIDI on midi channel auto which in turn plays the downstream instruments? Sorry if I didn't make sense, the more I think I have it figured out the more I confuse myself with more complicated setups.
Great question! If they are all set on the same Auto Channel I believe it would trigger all the machines.
