Damiano is really special. His voice is so unique, recognizable, raspy but at the same time so clear and powerfull, especially on those belting notes. You should also check for your love at 1Live concert and la paura del buio from radio italia. He is very versatile.

the cool thing with these kids is that very few of their songs sound like more of the same.. they dabble in different genres and rhythms and styles with ease...
I know doing more of the same band is probably not your thing but I would suggest, if nothing else for personal enjoyment, to listen to Coraline and grab the english lyrics for it..it's an absolute gutpunch... La paura del buio is also worth a listen for Damiano's vocal antics.. but really most of their songs are bangers

Agree but with the video translated of Coraline the one most used by reaction UA-camrs ( with the figure of a woman ) is the one full of mistakes , better the one without any figure ,it's much more correct translation

    Nice analysis, as usual.
Let my add something that's hard to notice for those who are not fluent in Italian. Damiano (generally speaking) adds unique rhythm to his delivery. For English speakers, I wanna be your slave is an example. Listen to the original and then the one they recorded with Iggy Pop. Iggy of course doesn't need/care to copy Damiano's style but he does struggle with the very specific rhythm in the first part of the lyrics, and you can hear that.
To Italian speakers here Damiano does add extra emphasis here and there, to add rhythm as you noticed (it's a very minimalistic - acoustic setup for the band, even if technically a full set of drums is as acoustic as you can get, still their choice is to give Ethan little to do; meaning that Damiano's voice is carrying the song even more). Those emphasis mix and add up with the natural ones of the Italian language, which is a skill in both singing and song writing. What I mean, for Italians is easy to sing along, as far as words and melody are concerned, but not as easy to deliver the correct rhythm.
The bridge is even more interesting, as he's playing with rhythm and syntax. Again this is very hard to get for non speakers. Italian is a s-v-o language much like English but the order is not as strict and more often than not the subject is implied and omitted. The core of the sentence is the very tight v-o pair. In the first verses of the bridge "Prima di te ero un pazzo / ora lascia che ti racconti / avevo una giacca sgualcita / portavo [B] tagli sui polsi / oggi mi sento benedetto / e non trovo [B] niente da aggiungere / ..." there are no subjects, not even one. The verbs "ero", "avevo", "portavo", "sento", "trovo" all imply "io" (I) as subject. The v-o pairs carry all the meaning.
Damiano chooses to break the sentence and take a breath at the most unexpected time, right in between the v-o pair. If you didn't know (and feel) it was done on purpose, you'd think he ran out of breath. I've marked the breaks with the [B]. This feels very unnatural, almost disturbing, to Italians. I have trouble singing along because of that, it's very off-beat compared to the natural rhythm of the language so to say, but matches perfectly with the broken rhythm of the music. Imagine singing Let It Be like this: "Let it be, let it [B] be / Let it be, let it [B] be / whisper words of [B] wisdom, let it be".
This song is also powerful as it tells the story of the relationship of artists with their inspiration (personified as "Marlena"). It's great but of course it doesn't last forever, and the song is a cry to call "her" back.
[The rational me argues that it barely makes any sense as you have to be strongly inspired to write such a beautiful song, so lack of inspiration can't be your problem, but I digress]

I totally agree with you. Even for us Italians is hard to sing along with him, in fact if you listen to Italian guys sing this song, as me, we usually start to sing at "quindi Marlena torna a casa perché il freddo qui si fa sentire, quindi Marlena torna a casa perché non voglio più aspettare". This part is easy and the words are pronounced slowly, even though I struggle with the rhythm, because I'm not a singer, but never mind.
Anyway I love your comment. It's so specific.

      @@stefaniaviterbo8573 Thanks!
It's not just you struggling with the rhythm, and even singers would struggle. Non native speakers probably find it easier, for them it's just sounds with a rhythm. For us it's words, with unnatural rhythm.
Damiano plays with rhythm in many ways. Breaking mid-sentence is just one way. Another one, even more subtle, is tonic stress. If you pay attention, "e non trovo niente da aggiungere/questa città si affaccèra quando ci vedrà giungere", has a natural rhythm guided by tonic stresses in "città", "affaccerà", "vedrà".
But Damiano breaks it, he actually sings the way I've written it, "affaccèra" instead of "affaccerà" (I need to explain to non speakers: in these words the tonic stress is on the last syllable, which is uncommon in Italian). It's very subtle, you need to listen to it very carefully... Damiano sings "affaccèra" which technically is wrong (artistic license) but fits with the rhythm of the music. It's a tiny change, but if you try and sing it, and you sing "affaccerà" (which is correct Italian) you'll find yourself off-beat (w/o really knowing why).
These things make it harder to sing along for Italians, in a way. You don't really notice them until you actually try.

      Come Back Home
      Versioni: #1#2#3
I'm walking through my city, the wind is blowing hard
I left everything behind, the sun's on the horizon
I see houses from afar, they closed the doors
But luckily I've got her hand and her red cheeks
She pulled me up from the ground covered with thorns
With a thousand snakes' bites, motionless through the coils
She didn't listen to those bastards and their cursing
With one look she convinced me to pack my bags and leave
And this is a journey no one's ever made before
Alice and her wonders, the mad hatter
We'll walk along this road and I'll never be tired
Until time brings white onto your hair
Just a paper sheet and half a cigarette are left in my hand
Let's stay a little longer, we're not in a hurry
Because I've got a sentence written in my head, but I've never said it
Because life without you can't be perfect
So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here
So, Marlena, come back home, I don't want to wait anymore
So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here
So, Marlena, come back home, because I'm afraid I'll disappear
And the sky is slowly becoming transparent here
The sun is illuminating the people's weaknesses
A salty tear wets my cheek, while
She sweetly caresses my face with her hand
With blood on my hands I'll climb all the peaks
I want to get where the human eye stops
In order to learn to forgive all of my sins
Because sometimes even angels are afraid of death
Just a paper sheet and half a cigarette are left in my hand
Let's run away from those who are too thirsty for revenge
From this motionless land, because I'm feeling it stifling now
Yesterday I was quiet because today I'll be the storm
So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here
So, Marlena, come back home, I don't want to wait anymore
So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here
So, Marlena, come back home, because I don't want anymore...
Before you I was just a lunatic, let me tell you now
I wore a creased jacket and cuts on my wrists
Today I feel blessed and can't find anything else to add
This city will look out when it sees us arrive
I was in the balance between being the victim and being the judge
I was a shiver that brings light to darkness
And sets you free from these bright shiny chains
And I'm in doubt, whether they were deaths or rebirths
So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here
So, Marlena, come back home, I don't want to wait anymore
So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here
So, Marlena, come back, because I don't want to disappear anymore, ah ah ah
Ah ah, nai nai nai nai
So, Marlena, come back home, I feel it's getting cold in here
So, Marlena, come back home, because I'm afraid I'll disappear

I'm hoping commercialization won't ruin them and force them to make more songs like that because they're gonna get more popular like that.

Torna a Casa (Come back home) - the name Marlena in this song refers to their muse/creative inspiration not a real woman - so when they sing Marlena torna a casa (Marlena come back home) they are imploring their creative muse to come back and inspire them. The official video for this is really good too but I would recommend watching a video with the English lyrics translation - or other language translation - as well - see below for one of these for English.

Great observations, especially considering that you don't speak Italian. There is a point (about 1:37) where you are commenting on the dynamics but you are talking over the top of one of the most beautiful dynamics in this performance (even more so than the studio version) where Damiano whispers "perchè la vita, senza te, non pùo essere perfetta" (because life, without you, can not be perfect). How does such a young man become such a master of his craft? Sublime. This band are going places.

You always find and react to my favourite bands, I'm so happy! You should react to the video of them singing morirò da re from the same session! And I'm sure people have mentioned the I wanna be your slave live performance! :)
It's really nice to see someone do a proper react and talk about the interesting particularities in the singing and Damiano's voice, rather than just being shocked/snotty about "omg sex appeal" like some of the videos YT kept recommending me did, so thank you! 😊I always love learning about things I wouldn't have noticed in vocal performances :)

Simply put, Marlena is the muse but she is not a woman, it refers to music.
In the text "Marlena returns home" she talks about her difficulty in composing texts because she has lost her inspiration.
In the song "L'altra dimensione" of the album "Teatro d'ira" Marlena is back and also with arrogance.

Take a video with the English translation so you can understand the lyrics of the song at the same time. Because the Måneskin texts are very significant and profound.

For me personally Italy has introduced me to quite a number of great musicians through Eurovision, but Maneskin are sure something else. Having Damiano as a frontman, who's got the voice, skills, attitude and charisma to be a legend on stage, definately helps, but the entire band is awesome.
And talking about Eurovision. As a vocal coach, Gjon's Tears' entry Tout l'univers should be very interesting. His transitions between head voice and chest voice are something else and he hits some impresssive notes (the highest in the jury finale, but the grand finale is worth a watch just as much).
Other great vocal performances include France (probably the most beautiful french song I've heared in a while) and Malta (girl got some serious pipes).

It surprises me how many great 'love' songs are not actually about love of a person. They might instead be love for a place, or music, or in this case a muse. The similarly named Italian classic "Torna A Surriento" was originally an advertisement to encourage tourists to visit the Bay of Naples. LOL.
Edit: Sorrento wanted tourists to return as soon as possible as it was in need of cash to pay for a new sewage system. So maybe a more accurate title would have been 'Return To Smelly Sorrento'. But, of course, that does not sound so romantic.

    • @Maloenton-Agency
      @Maloenton-Agency 2 роки тому +2

the song "Torna a Surriento" dates back to 1894. at that time the city was in disaster like all other cities in Italy ... not only Sorrento. Today Sorrento, Capri, Ischia, and the Amalfi Coast are places frequented by rich people from all over the world!

It would be so cool if you could react to some international music, here in Italy we have this amazing singer called Gaia. She is half Italian half Brazilian so she incorporates both musical influences and languages in her music. Her biggest hit, which came out in 2020, is called Chega. I'm more of a fan of her second Album called 'Alma' which includes hits like Nuvole di Zanzare (Cloud of Mosquitoes), Salina and Boca ☺
